I hope the b8 guys luck out and the pistons are strong enough to handle some more heat and the rods are the weak link… new rods should be a fairly cheap upgrade, but if they need pistons its probably going to be a big big ticket (alusil)
What are the stock internals…cast or forged? I was talking with jspazz about this and he thought cast, but I thought forged. I was guessing.
Seemed odd to make an S5 4.2 FSI with forged internals then go cast on the S4 on a forced induction motor. Maybe that’s one of the money saving tricks that makes the 3.0T so effective for Audi, as is evidenced by its prolific use in the A4/S4/A5/S5/SQ5/Q7/A6/A7/A8 not to mention the Porsche applications.
Interesting… Will see if his predictions come to fruition… I probably go the full route day 1 if that is the case… At a minimum I would go blower and fueling upgrades depending on the price of building the motor… Biggest concern at that point would be the DSG, given APR doesn’t have one to test, so not sure I wanna be the guinea pig… Iv’e more or less offered my car as a tester for DSG tune and blower but they haven’t bit so not sure I want to pay the full price as the tester… Spend 20K+ and than not be able to use it because the tranny can’t handle it… Then I have a expensive garage queen literally or would have to swap to a 6-speed which is probably the route I would go at that point but that would be another probably 20K… Given I could probably get 45K for my car + the 40K in mods I just mentioned I would just buy something else… Everyone on AZ talks big but I don’t expect too many to jump on the full setup to quickly… Richi will, Imola monster says he will and I think he would, but who else?
Id think the pistons are forged to avoid the cylinder wall scoring, not sure on rods though, those could be cast or powdered metal for costs savings
If he says cast I believe it…
Lol yes from what I could see they were definitely a cast finish up top.
so cast pistons and rods? surprising.
How does APR know they can handle 500 whp (if that guy on audizine is correct and they’re putting a TVS1900 on the car with stock internals).
Has APR blown an engine yet? Hopefully they have and we can beat the details out of them on what failed/when!
care to expand on that?
Lol saki…While I didn’t get to see my motor apart, if it even was taken apart that is, from what I could see through the plug holes, the pistons were cast, up top. It seems they pulled the whole long block out and replaced it, likely without pulling the heads. Warranty work isn’t paid for
As far as I can tell, the motors that have failed have been pistons, ringlands and the like. And Arin maintains that no APR tuned engine has blown yet, I have no case against that point…
Forged pistons make a bit of clatter at warm-up, since they expand at a different rate with temp, so it’s not that typical in most motors…
what does ‘Warranty work isn’t paid for’ mean?
As for APR’s record of no engine failures, it’s going to be tough to keep because tuned or not, there will be engine failures. We have seen a few RS4 engine failures, both tuned and not tuned, caused by anything from foreign body (carbon) getting between a cylinder and cylinder wall and scoring it, or a mis-shift etc. Hard to blame a tune unless the parameters were retarded and the damage on tear down can be seen to have been caused by the parameters.
richib86 had an RS4 engine failure after running it with a tune that had retarded parameters. Pretty simple one there.
Oops didn’t finish that sentence…they don’t pay them to do failure analysis on warranty jobs…
I frankly don’t think the DSG will be the weak link.
the 2.0T/3.2 DSG’s were able to put well over double the HP/TQ without any major issues (and really no tuning) and were not running into major issues until guys started building cars with built heads etc seeing upwards of 600hp (considering the car comes stock with 200hp that’s pretty impressive).
I also don’t think HPA will do anything for these cars since they are playing catchup with the 2.0T world with their Golf R parts. (HPA was supposed to get me a “beta” of their tune in November and have heard nothing since) If anyone is going to come to the table with a DSG tune it’s going to be APR. I don’t think anyone else has the resources to do it. I also don’t think most companies will see the returns they would need to start playing with that as well.
I would be interested in doing a blower upgrade but in reality the car will be going back at the end of the lease because it has already had a huge dec on it (happened in the first week of ownership) and I want/need a wagon and MB seems to be the only one coming to the table with a high hp wagon for the NA market. (well and cadillac but that’s not for me)
KB go check out the CTS-V wagon. It’s pretty cool. I was chatting witha guy in one at the strip last time I was there, and I really likeed it.

I don’t have the extra money to throw around like those guys, but if it has enough components that can be installed in stages, I could probably do it over the course of 12-18 months. It took me 16 months to get their tune, pulley, CPS, intake, and exhaust. In that time, I’ll get to see the results and wear on the cars of the guys who are able to get it right away.

Skid, totally understood on the financial piece… My comment should have been most anyway not everyone… Just a lot of shit talkers over there which i am sure you know… Your car is coming along well!

There are a lot of shit talkers over there. There are also a lot of really dense/stupid people. It never ceases to amaze me. However, it is one of the highest volume Audi enthusiast sites and as a result I feel like I learn about new things from their site before any of the others.
Thanks for the compliment on my car. I installed my exhaust last weekend with the black diamond tips and used some black vinyl tape to black out the chrome on my windows. Combine that with the gunmetal wheels and the black RS style grill I have coming and it’s looking pretty good. The aesthetic modifications aren’t nearly as exciting as performance ones though. They’re just to keep me from getting bored until a new performance mod comes out.
I really need to take it to the drag strip, but I’m still a bit intimidated. I need to find a local person to go with so I can see if 1fastS4’s GIAC time was due to the Sac drag strip here or his tune. ;D

The strip is intimidating the first time i’m not going to lie
But when you get there you will realize nobody cares really about your car…everyone is doing their own thing and as long as you follow the rules and know the etiquette you will be welcomed
When you run 12.35 @ 111 in your four door sedan that looks stock guys might say wtf? and start asking about it
It is super fun and I guarantee there will be other cool cars you will like there unless you live in the middle of nowhere.
Just skimmed this thread…I also think the DSG will be able to handle loads of power. GTi guys are running 500+ CHP into theirs with no modifications and even after a ton of beating with a spikey 3071r turbo, the clutches are showing no signs of wear.
Skid, Yeah that other site gets the traffic that is for sure… If you can weed through the garbage there is good stuff… I still visit and read just don’t post…
Post some pics of the car…
As for the dragstrip, it’s not a big deal… Go early and watch some passes… learn where the pre stage and staging lights are so you don’t run through them… Your not bracket racing so don’t worry so much about timing the lights your first time out… Just get a good launch and hold the car in as straight a line as possible… Also, make sure you know where the track ends so you don’t let off early… Just go up to 120mph and then let off as you’ll be fine then… It really is a good time and the best way to judge your car and mods… Sac is a very very good track so you should run well…
