cheap copper is the best for performance but degrades quickly.
the more expensive plugs only real value is prolonged service life.
if the plugs are easy to get to, buy copper.
if not, go with platinum or something
Well keep in mind that the Copper or platinum core is what makes or breaks the plug. There is much more to using platinum then service life. The platinum core really helps generate a hotter spark. The rebound on the core and its ability to transfer are much better then copper. Still at what point is the platinum needed over copper.
So there is more real performance value in the more expensive core and they have more to offer then just service life. This however doesn’t make a quality copper plug bad. I agree a quality copper plug still is a good way to go. Your very correct in the fact that they fade quick and don’t clean themselves well. Running a copper plug hard can cut its life span down considerably.
From an Audi stand point and being a service tech for many years before moving up the chain. I can tell you that some cars just never seem to run well when you don’t use the OEM style plugs.
I have a few questions related to spark plugs on our 3.0 motors.
What is the OEM spark plug gap spec? I haven’t been able to find anything official on this.
Has anyone experimented with the gap spec to see if any benefit to performance can be had?
Regarding spark plugs with the new JHM tune:
I know that we definitely need to be running the latest revision of the coil packs.
Somewhere on this forum I think someone mentioned that the spark plugs we use need to be the revised ones. When was the spark plug revision made and how can we tell for sure if we have them?
Will we need to increase the spark plug service interval frequency if running the JHM tune?
Just for my own notes, leaving any specs I find here:
Spark plug tightening torque: 30 Nm
Great question. I think there supposed to come pre gaped but we should check them before install. So it would be good to check
Last time I got a set of 6 from ecs the gaps were slightly different on almost every plug.
For some reason I came up with 0.043 in. or 1.1 mm as the gap spec. I think that info was from Old Guy on AZ, but can anyone verify that spec?
Yes that is correct.
