I highly doubt the tuning would cause starter failure or else we would see a whole bunch of these threads.
Starters on these Audis just… die. On the B6-B7 S4 they get sluggish and it becomes harder and harder to start the car.
Did the dealership explain how it failed?
Nah no detailed explanation. The only thing I have is the service report, the relevant portion of which I posted above.

people like me and others here who fix their own cars need info like this to decide how to attack the repair. I’ve changed a couple starters on my M5 already over 300000km now, lol, but without people posting and thus helping diagnosis, id be a lot dirtier and angrier lol.
I agree with Prime, what a holes. it’s a $300 part for crissake.

I don’t know how much the parts/labor would have been, as the cost wasn’t listed on my service report. But as I noted above, I’m sure it was less expensive than the ECU replacement.

So let me get this straight… you replaced the ECU and they restored your warranty?
^^ it’s likely more nuanced than that. The starter was replaced under warranty, and probably many other types of problems would be as well. However, they still know my car’s history, so some type of catastophic engine failure may not be warrantied because it’s so easy to blame the tune.
