Steering Angle Sensor Diagnostic Help

Hey guys,

I’ve have a recurring traction control light (ESP) coming on (seemingly randomly) but it is on more than it is off… The ABS light comes on once in a while as well, maybe every 5th time I drive the car. No brake light.

Last VAGCOM scan showed:

Address 03: ABS Brakes
Labels: 8E0-614-517.lbl
Part No: 8E0614517Q
Component: ABS/ESP allrad 4533
Coding: 04597
Shop #: WSC 01234
VCID: 3663C36D126573AE711-50E8

1 Fault Found:
01286 - Sensor for Steering Angle (G85); Supply Voltage Terminal 30
    35-00 - -

Looking around it seems to be something with the steering angle sensor (obviously). What I am trying to determine is if the sensor is actually bad or just the calibration? In a lot of the results I get searching online, seems like most everyone else also has another fault code that comes along with that, being

00778 Steering Angle Sensor Faulty intermittent

But I don’t have that code. Mine doesn’t even say faulty or intermittent.

I imagine the numbers below the fault mean something, but I don’t know what… what does the

35-00 - -

indicate?

Note, at this point I do not have VCDS and cannot really do anything myself, these results are from when I had a shop scan it. Trying to determine what I should be troubleshooting ( i.e. fuses/wiring or new sensor or calibration only, etc)

Thanks

Sorry, the code # is “01826”, I transcribed it wrong in my initial post.

anyone?

;D

Sorry, didn’t see your earlier post. ::slight_smile:

As you have only the one code, and the symptoms seem to be intermittent, if you can get access to VCDS, try capturing the specific codes, then clearing them. This will give you a record of what was going on before you cleared the codes, then a clean baseline of no codes against which you can see what’s going on if they come back.

Implicit in this is the value of getting yourself a genuine VCDS cable from Ross-Tech. If you plan on keeping your Audi for more than a trip to the end of the driveway, the VCDS cable will pay for itself in spades. Further, it will work on virtually any recent VAG vehicle, should you move to another car.

Let us know how you make out.

I missed this too sorry.

The thing to start with is like duff said. Clear the code and see how long it takes for it to come back. Starting with that is a good idea.

the suggestion of vag com is also a good idea because it will let you know what rpm and mileage the fault was triggered on. That can help in tracking down all the little issues and when they actually happen.

Thanks guys. I’ve debated getting VCDS ever since I pulled my engine last spring. But I am up to 193k miles and it’s like this debate in my head on how much longer the car will even last vs spending the money lol. Of course I could just buy another audi when this one dies… hmm maybe that is just one way to help convince my wife ;D

193 nice. As long as you do the chains the motors are pretty strong and should run for a long time.

The good thing about VCDS is that the vag com cables really hold there value. Your not going to loose very much if you lose anything at all. Then there is the case where you can just get another audi. That would solve all the issues.
