Steering Rack Replacement/Engine Drop - What else should I have replaced?

So my steering rack is a goner or at the very least, the bushings between it and the car. So I was told by my initial mechanic it’d be 15hrs in labor. Got it checked at another shop today and they said it’d be 25hrs labor and dealership said they usually charge 30hrs. Soooo needless to say, I’m kinda aggravated lol… Since the engine has to be dropped for this, what else should I have done at the same time? I’m going to order a crank pulley now. Been trying to reach JHM by phone to have it shipped overnight, but no luck yet. Any other maintenance stuff that could be done during the drop?

Headers or at least remove Cats. O2 sensor relocation. How much you want to spend?

Yeah, that’s going to take too long since there aren’t any plug and play headers out yet. Someday lol… I’m going to leave the cats, etc for now since I don’t have headers to relocate them properly. But yeah, water pump was replaced less than 20k miles ago. was resealed a little over 10k miles ago. Crank pulley I’m ordering now. Not sure what else in the maintenance (or old age) schedule can/should be done.

I just had my power steering go out. Not sure if it’s a support common problem but the hoses would be readily replaced with it out.

Did they tell you why the engine has to come out? Usually there are just three bolts that hold the steering rack to the body with two accessed through the cowl area and then one accessed through the driver’s side opening in the wheel well.

If I remember correctly from your AZ posts aren’t you local to me? I live in Northern Virginia.

Crank pulley is a good idea. You can punch out the cats as they tend to fail over time. And since you have the JHM tune you can email them about adjusting for the removed cats.

Look at the 02s I think its bank 4 and bank 1 are the 02s that would require the motor being pulled if they went bad. The starter is something good to look at but they seem to be pretty good. Check the motor mounts as you drive the car on the track so that would be something good to look at.

Over all since you road race the car. I would look into getting the cats punched out of the manifolds and look at the primary 02s. Sucks about the rack. If you can see whatelse jimmyBones has to say. He is very good with doing proper work the right way.

Hello SiX6SiX

Have you purchased the steering rack yet ? cause i have a donor car with me which i recently pulled the motor and gearbox out. the body still has the rack in it its a 2007 S8 before removing the motor i started the car and it was showing around 130000KM, If you need it PM me and i will give it to you at a friendly very low price,

Physically by looking at it it looks good no leaks or cracks even the mountings are good here is the link to the thread.

Sorry for the delay. I have one now that was from another donor car, but PM me anyway. I may take it off your hands if super low.
