STOP before you GO

I have a feeling that there is a lot more to come for the 3.0 and I really think its going to be a very quick car, thus it will need some massive brakes. I know there are a ton of options out there and I figured we needed a thread for it. I dont care if theres a million threads on AZ for brakes, but this site is obvisouly superior so we need info here too.

Right now JHM seems to have the best deal I can find when it comes to the Porsche BBK’s.

but I’m wondering is there any cheaper way to put a kit together for those of us that don’t have 4g’s to drop on a brake setup, and thats just for the fronts.
Does the Rear Cayenne fit the B6 as well??
Also having such massive brakes does that put any more strain on the other brake components like the master cylinder ? or anything else?
I thought I read somewhere that theres a benz that has cross drilled OEM rotors which will fit as well. I think cross drilled looks better but I’m not sure what the performance benifits are of either?

If theres anyone that already has some BBK setups can you please post some feedback and any tips from experience.

Good idea for a thread

Here is a pic of my brake upgrade

http://audirevolution.net/addons/albums/images/435707631.jpg

I put together a S4 brake upgrade, simply because my wheels would not clear the cayenne calipers.

My kit contains

  • S4 front and rear calipers
  • ECS 2 piece slotted and drilled front rotors
  • ECS 2 piece slotted rear rotors
  • Braided brake lines
  • Hawk HPS pads

All in all I probably pieced together my kit for about $2500

In regards to drilled rotors, apart from a little bit of a weight saving they are little more for show than anything. Also depending on the quality of manufacturing the drilled rotors might be prone to cracking around those spots.

Upgrading your brakes won’t put that much strain your other components like master cylinders and the best rear brake kit would be a S4 rear set up.

I believe the master cylinder for the S4 is different than the A4 one. I know one of the braking components is, so yes I would say you should upgrade to the S4 one so you’re not cutting yourself short. That is…if i’m not mistaken

The cayenne rear brake setup does not work because the A4 and S4 both have the e-brake integrated into the caliper. The tregs use a separate drum style e-brake. The only other rear setups that work are B7 A4, B6/7 S4, and the JHM rear BBK which re-uses stock S4 calipers with bigger JHM rotors and hardware to move out the caliper. You have to call them to get it. IIRC, it’s about $1000

The difference between the B7 A4 and S4 rear setups are the rotors. The A4 uses non-vented rears, while the S4 has the vented. I think the rotor diameter is the same. The B7 A4 rear setup is a VERY common upgrade in B6 A4 land. I’d have to believe there is no difference in braking power between the A4 and S4 rear setups. The S4 is just more heat resistant.

For front, you’re limited to the options you already know. Honestly, the B6 S4 brakes are stout, and the only reason I can see why you should do a BBK is if you are road racing, or if you want to save some unsprung weight. The look badass which is more than half the reason you should get them. I used to have a 3.0 A4, as some of you know, and believe me, the S4 setup is INCREDIBLE.

Outside of that, good brake fluid like Motul, SS lines if you think they do anything, and a proper bleed will go a long way. Good pads are a must. I got some Akebono ProAct Euro for my car, and they seem to be just like OEM bite, with no dust at all. Highly recommend them based on my research.

I have heard that changing Master cylinders is not advisable as it messes with your abs systems.

I have been using the HP2 b5 S4 calipers on my car for a few months now. I like them a lot for the money.

Though they are just a front set up I did feel like they did their job. They are a dual piston set up and use larger rotors up front. I also added SS lines on all four corners and I must say braking has improved nicely. I might step up to a BBk later down the road but my only other plans are going for B6 S4 rears.

More stopping power and fill up that damn wheel in the back a little more. I think my old haro had a bigger set up than our rears :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah the entire brake setup on A4’s from the factory is pitiful. Be glad you don’t have a 1.8, which has even smaller front rotors.

Those rotors from ECS are beautiful!! Cross drilled looks so much better, I want to buy mine from JHM, but theres are slotted?, I was told that cross drilled help with cooling of the rotor itself? Also you can’t resurface a cross drilled or slotted rotor right? you have to just buy it new right?

Yes drilled and slotted rotors have to be replaced. All audi rotors generally have to be replaced when it comes time for a rbake job anyways.

The few people that have had the ECS rotors have issues with them all the time. So I would avoid them if you can.

The drilled has absolutely no benefit besides looks. They also make the rotor more prone to cracking. Slotted rotors keep the pads clean

Yeah I have heard the same thing about the ecs stuff as well, except I heard about it after I had bought them. The only reason that I got drilled front is because they didn’t have of the plain slotted fronts and it took so long to get them in stock, so I just took the drilled and slotted.

If they fail I will be getting JHM rotors that’s for sure

If you are still on stock brakes, Count has suggested that good pads and SS lines are a very solid upgrade without going BBK… and JHM juuuuust might have LW rotors in the works

Are the 6 piston Brembo calipiers that come with the brembo stamp, are those they exact same design as the porsche cayenne 6 piston calipers, is it just the logo thats different?

These are the ones I’m referring to
http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/node/141

I am pretty sure that they are close to being the same, just porsche would have specified a couple of different hardware specifications.

What they are, I have no idea.

The kits in the brembo GT setups are completely different calipers. Those are two piece. The calipers for the touraeg and cayenne are monoblock

Here is some info that might help
-The Touareg V6 and V8 use the Brembo 17zz caliper which is designs for rotors no larger than 330mm
-The Touareg V10, R50, and all Cayenne’s use the 18zz caliper designed for up to 350mm rotors

The touareg 2’s all came with shitty brakes compared to the touareg 1’s. they are 4 piston brembo I believe
