For the past 2yrs on some warm to hot days when I leave my car parked at work, I have a hard time starting my car. Its in direct sun all day. So today it was about 85 out outside temp reads 100 due to the asphalt. Took me about a min to get it started. Strange thing it happens on some warm to hot days and only when its parked in direct sun. Never any other time of year. I thought I heard a few years ago (if I’m not wrong) that it some sort of sensor, but I can’t remember.
Cranks non starter issue. Just takes longer to start, like its trying to get fuel. May start then cut off. Go to start it again and it starts right away. I did some more looking around last night and read on few other post on az with similar issues and it turned out to be a dying fuel pump. Kinda makes sense I have a fuel filter that’s a about a year and a half old on there, but I still get an occasional knocking noise from the pump. Is there any way I can check it with vcds?
The crank but no start is usually the EVAP system purging causing a drop in line pressure or fuel. You can crank stop and crank and usually that does it. The really hot temps can cause that issue. Its usually a pressure at the rail and the car trying to catch up. The fuel pump is in the tank in fuel so sure the pump can be going bad but outside temps and being in the sun dont really effect the pump at all.
Ok then. It wouldn’t surprise me if the pump is going but. It did it again today went to go to lunch and had the same issue. Be it not so bad today only took about 10 secs to start. I did notice one thing to day. I filled up today and drove home about 30 miles. When I park my car and turned it off I heard a bubbling sound coming from the tank or fuel pump. As if fuel was going back to the tank or air. This is the first time that I have ever heard or noticed that sound.
I would inspect that. It could be the tank vent. Also look at your fuel filter. The fuel filter has the check valve in it and it has the pressure regulator.
One good way to test and see if the pump purge is working. When you get out of the car and think your going to park the car in a siuation that would have a non start.
When you park pop the hood but leave it shut. If you crack the fuel feed line when you get back to the car you can take a pop bottle and pull the main fuel line. Its a 17mm and a 14mm pull the fuel line put the end of it into the pop bottle and just go open the driver side door. Once you open the driver side door the pump should prime the fuel system. make sure the car was parked for a while first but if you dont get the prime or you get the prime and you dont get any fuel its time to check the fuel pump and filter
Ok then that’s part of the problem. There’s something (possible a fuse or relay?) that is not telling the pumps to prime the low pressure side of the system.
Just for instance, I was working on a friend’s RS4, was helping him do a carbon clean and we had the upper fuel block off of the car and had the low pressure fuel line pulled back out of the way but pointing sorta up and to the left side of the car. We had forgotten to pull the fuse for the fuel pump and somebody opened the driver’s door which sent a pressurized stream of fuel in a nice arc over onto the driveway.
That priming of the system is pretty important, you’ll want to figure out what’s going on there. Look at the fuse for it for starters, it’s on the fuse block located inside the cabin next to where the driver’s door closes.
