Stumped....

I think the R-series clutch would be a little TOO stiff for a daily, especially in DC morning congestion. I had an RS4 clutch/flywheel in my old B5 and that was nice until I hit bumper to bumper; I can only imagine what an R-series would feel like.

Will price out the JHM one to see the difference; have heard stories about the SBs imploding on themselves.

I put a heavy duty street clutch in my STi. Drove like stock, but had a -much- heavier throw. Took a few days to get used to it. Your left leg adapts quickly.

Funny thing is when you drive something else, and almost put your foot through the floorboard!

it is not stiff…where’d you get that idea?

It’s just a little different on engagement.

I drove my dad’s BMW for the first time in a while on Saturday and it felt like I was going to push the clutch pedal through the floor. Also I missed the clutch pedal and hit the brake pedal with my left foot by accident while still in my neighborhood. The car damn near stopped on a dime.

Stiff as in heavier engagement; basing my experience off my old B5 RS4 clutch/PP in the B5 and sitting exposure in Jimmy’s B6. When I bought my Avant, the soft clutch engagement was a godsend compared to what I came from, I compared it to “soft butter” versus frozen ice cream with spoon scoop.

Don’t be a VAGina slow, just yell Marine Corps every time you press the clutch in, it will keep the killer inside alive.

Slow4 skips leg day

#25 and #26 have it spot on lol.

But seriously, I couldn’t feel any more pedal force was necessary with the blue JHM car’s 5R vs my own stock clutch. That SAC is seriously shitty. It got stuck after I revved at the lights a couple of times. I looked real smooth…

Haha, I hate you both.

As for the clutch/FW dilemna, got PMs back from both Jake at JHM and somebody at 034; they both spoke highly of the JHM LWFW, which bodes well for my want of the stage 3 JHM clutch option. As for the R-series, I’ll be a VAGina about it and skip that route…will make up for it on my leg days.

I think 034 makes the lwfw for jhm… but they are right. What’s the price difference between the non r and r clutch.

Skip the Stg 3 and just go for stg 4. I really don’t get why JHM has 3&4. I guess just to keep from scaring people off. I think should have the one non-r series (ie the stg4) and then the 2 R series they currently have (or will have? Not sure if officially released).

Stg 4 is more than easy to DD. It’s the manual I taught my wife to drive on and then when I got my wrangler she thought it was tough to drive as a manual lol, no joke!

And personally I’d probably just go to the entry R series clutch, at least if you EVER think there might be a chance you’d end up with the blower or nitrous.

OEM B7FW w/ B7 OEM Clutch 1215
JHM LWFW w/ Stg 3 Ceramic/Metal-Organic 1600
JHM LWFW w/ Stg 4 Ceramic/Kevlar 1650
JHM LWFW w/ R-1 Organic/Organic 1725

The jump from OEM+ to non-r is about 435.
The jump from non-r to r is about 125.

I was talking to Jimmy about the Stg 4 Ceramic/Kevlar option for $50 more, its worth it. I don’t have any more aspirations to go S/C unless I win some sort of lottery. My plans for the Avant is to go up one or two more modifications (IM and in the distant future, headers) so theres no need for me to get the R-Series.

EDiT:

Haha, just found out what “SAC” is…thanks JimS4

In that case, I don’t think there’s really even much to think about. Just go with the stg 4 and be done with it.

engagement has nothing to do with the pedal. Maybe I wasn’t clear. The engagement of the clutch as in when it grabs and moves the car. Not pedal.

It’s very tame.

With all of that being said, my left knee is fukt from sports injuries that are coming back to haunt me. I’m a little worried I will need an automatic here before long. Will need knee surgery pretty soon to clean up some damage and that’s going to mean a month of not driving the RS4.

I DD my car with the stage IV clutch for over a year. It got annoying on the rare occasions that traffic was really bad but other then that it was great. Just got for it.

Getting old sucks. Our bodies can and will fall apart.

My father had to make the transition ~20 years ago. Sports injuries caught up with him. He could no longer actuate a clutch due to deterioration of his left knee, and nerve damage that makes it hard to raise his left foot at the ankle.

First he gave up on sports cars and got a Lexus. Went through a few other unsatisfying cars, and landed on a V10 M5 that he has kept for the last 8 years.

The good news is that the current generation of SMGs and auto-dual-clutch gearboxes are phenomenal. Nobody gives up their man-card like 20+ years ago. Only purists and those that enjoy the engagement complain.

If you have no SC aspirations, I ask you to reconsider the 1R clutch then. I’ve had B6 S4 stock, B6 S4 JHM LWFW/Stg4, B7 RS4 stock and I’ve had a go on the JHM 5R. The 5R requires slightly more force required than the B6 S4 stocker, but no difference to the JHM Stg4 or the stock RS4. Maybe I’m not communicating my frustration with the stock RS4 clutch enough!

No problem. I’m a moron when it comes to abbreviations for the most part haha

I think you’ll be happy with the stage IV. I noticed no difference in the amount of force it took to press in the clutch over stock and the engagement you get used to in a couple days.

I’m 27 and already starting to feel my knees going to shit. I overshot a jump snowboarding by about 30 feet a few years back and every season it seems I get less riding in before I have to pop a few advil or quit for the day. Getting in the car and clutching for a 3+ hour drive then really sucks.
