It allows the pressure built up from the wheel arches to escape so the car can be sucked down to the road further. You’ll also see the same concept on the back side of rear fenders of similar cars and even some newer performance cars.
I’m sure beem could explain it much better, but that’s the jest I understood from my racing buddy.
Car looks pretty damn nasty though, the second half of the car looks unbelievable sleek and long where the front half loots somewhat ordinary (considering etc).

I really like the new Audi headlights. Hugely awesome face on the new A6.
