TCU Tune take one

So we took some footage for internal viewing of the stage 1 TCU tune. The file has much since changed from this but this gives you a decent idea on some of the shifting changes

watch the stock tip file shift a few times then watch the modded file

modded

http://audirevolution.net/videos/74/stage-1-tip-3.0-file

Great videos there Count.

From what I remember driving the tip, the changes in gear definitely look quicker. I am guessing that it feels a lot better than what it shows in the video

Can you comment on what the downshifts are like, are they just as quick going down as they are going up in tip mode

EDIT

Just watch Meistah’s videos and you can definitely see the improvment in the TCU tune

That shifting is VERY fast, didn’t even notice it was a stock 3.0 at first! I know I’m beating it to death but how much earlier does the torque converter lock up?

And maybe I’m a bit off but it looks like that tune brings the stock 3.0 to being a tiny bit faster than a 6spd 0-60 (6.9sec)

Meistah I would like to test that statment, Where is there a tip that I can race cuz I have some pretty good shifting skills and I think the 6speed is still faster even without a short shifter, but the only way to know is to find out, of course we need to get me a tune first

That’s a great idea. Even if the TIP could shift as quick as a manual I think the 6speed might win as it will get more low end power out of the tune, it would be an interesting race either way. Find a local 3.0 guy with a TIP and get him to go JHM, then race him ;D Like I said before I’ll be doing a lot of comparisons with other audis (various 1.8s and a couple 2.0T’s) to see how it stacks up. If I can find a local 3.0 6spd I’ll see if I can do the test myself. I’m sure there will be lots of comparisons from JHM in the future as well, once they are done working on the products.

See this is what’s great about this forum, it’s just good conversation and in this case a bit of healthy competition. If I said the tip might be faster on AZ I would get ripped into by a dozen people, lol.

lol yea thats true, I was actually just reading on AZ for the 1st time in a long time the other day and it made me just realize why I don’t go over there anymore. People seem to just be immature over there, not everyone but it just seems theres lot of people who say inappropriate things and not to mention the constant arguing without obtaining any facts at all. So yea I definitly agree this forum has a much higher communication level.

I agree. keep bringing the good guys over.

As for the debate on 6speed and Tip. the 6speed has a better finial drive then the automatic so there is a little advantage to the manual gear wise. Its kinda close when you add the gear per gear raito in the transmission of both but the manual generally wins gear wise. Then there is the 200lb difference. having a Tip is like having a person sitting next to you that is shifting for you lol :stuck_out_tongue:

I think if you can get the TIP in the same range and the manual then everyone will be happy.

Personally I started out as a manual only person having been brought up on it, learn’t and then had one for years. My daily is a slush box (and has been for 10 years). The tow car/spare is a manual which I had the misfortune to be in in peak hour :frowning:

Now for motorsport for me it’s manual all the way, and if I’m going for a cruze/blat then I’d probably prefer manual too. And also it’s fun to take one to work every now and again. However for the daily grind you can’t really beat a slushy. (I’m getting to my point)

I had a chance to drive a TIP for a weekend once and me likes. All the benefits of both with only some of the downsides … like the shift program.

I must say when I took my brothers TIP for a run the shift program was way worse than my slushbox (and it’s not a TIP)… tap … wait … wait …wait … shift. (oh there it is) If that new TIP program moves the shift up to near almost where you hit the shifter then it will be a damn good thing (I may have to steal the keys!!!) (Just kidding Jnr!)

Hey guys new here and was curious about something. With this TCU tune that you speak of, does this only apply to TIP (5 speed, quattro) or will this also work with the CVT (6speed multitronic, FWD)? Maybe a dumb question but just wanted to verify.

Welcome Never Follow, I like your name by the way. No dumb questions around here, you will find this forum much different than other Audi forums such as AZ or others. There are many VERY helpful, experienced and knowledgable people on this forum so feel free to ask anything cuz you will never get attacked as you would on other forums for asking a question no matter what it is.

Thank you. I’m glad to be here especially with all the stuff JHM has going on for the 3.0 community. Couldn’t come at a better time for my car which ive owned since 2006.

Welcome Never Follow

Great question BTW

I didnt know that there were 3.0 CVT, I thought that the 3.0 put out to much torque for the CVT to handle. What it is it like to drive with the CVT.

In the CVT aren’t the shifts like seamless, I wouldnt have thought it would need a TCU tune.

Ill havt to look further into this. From what I recall they both take the same TCU boxes.

So never follow a good place to start is to look at your TCU and see the part number. This will help make more sense of all this.

Count brings up some good points. There’s always a lot of little variables that always go back and forth between TIP vs Manual. The biggest on the S4 is that the gearing on the S4 means the TIP will trap faster, but usually set a little slower ET (well for now, we’ll see what JHM manages to do with the development of this tuning). And that principal applies to several other cars. So a large factor of a race is also going to depend what speed it’s started from (if the race is from a dig, a solid launch from the manual and less weight could be a huge advantage, but from a interstate roll with less shifts and better high speed gearing. . . well you see what I’m getting at).

Personally I’d be hard pressed to give up my manual, it’s just way too fun. But there will come a day even for me when I relinquish that fun in the name of performance as it’s clear auto’s are the future. I will admit, watching some of the new auto tunes for the JHM S4’s is just impressive when they jump out of the hole. That and knowing every launch and every shift is perfect is a pretty convincing argument. At any rate, it’s great to see the advancements JHM/Count has been able to make with this tuning as it’s long overdue and something that NEVER would have happened without their involvement in my opinion.

nice stuff maddog. I usually am a hardcore manual guy. Still after getting the TCU Tune for the b6 I have to say the gap is closing.

While nothing will ever beat the feel of the manual a strong quick shifting autobot will really help bridge the gap and add fun to the tip

has anyone found out if the tune is compatible with 3.0 CVT models yet?

I think it was posted on here that they are. Worst case scenario you send in your TCU and ask for a beta program to test.

I really have to say the TCU tune transforms the car

From what I found the 2002-2004 TCU boxes are the same. If you have a CVT or a AWDT The TCU box is the same part number.
