Test drive and my car's value

Recently I have been searching for another car… specifically a MK1 TT roadster or B6 S4 Cabrio. I’ve always known that a dealer wouldn’t give you much $ for a trade in, especially on an 11 year old car. I’ve checked the kbb my car, a 2002 3.0 with 79k 6spd quattro sport. ~$6,400. I never expected it to be quite that low yet. I keep my car clean, but certainly not show status as it is my only daily driver and this time of year sucks. It’s got a few mods and can be put back to stock in a weekend.

There was a 225TT ALMS edition at a local Hyundai dealer. It had 10k less miles, and was in a bit better shape exterior wise. Interior, no pixels missing and the rest wasn’t bad either. They had it listed for $13,800. I loved it tho! I talked to the dealer about my car, they had the new car appaiser check it out and they came back with a number… $4,500. They were willing to give me $5k. I smirked. They proceeded to ask me did I know I have a check engine light on? I chuckled and told them yes, most likely for a bad 02 sensor - really it’s more likely for the cat’s but I wasn’t going to divulge that info. Needless to say, I didn’t do anything about the car, and it sold the next morning.

I went to another dealer (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep) and they had a 04 3.2 TT Raodster with 68k, listed for $16,300. Nimbus Grey with Baseball Glove interior in good condition. Needed a new cluster as many pixels were out. Worn stereo buttons, and sand all over the trunk, not a very clean detail job from the dealer. Test drove it, and even tho it wasn’t as spunky as the 1.8T, it was really neat to hear the 3.2 burbling out behind your head with the top down. This dealer talked a few numbers, but didn’t look at my car. they were going to give me kbb value for it. I was more happy, but still knew I could do better with a private sale. They were at least willing to work on both prices, unlike the Hyundai dealer. As I drove off, and couldn’t see the value the extra power or DSG transmission offered between either the 225 1.8T or my 3.0V6. Needless to say, I’m not looking at mk1 3.2 roadsters anymore.

The final destination was a Chevy dealer with a 04 S4 Cabrio, silver with black 6spd. 73k for $20,300. It was in fairly good condition, no worse than my car exterior wise. Interior, the climate controls were all worn off, and the door grabs were scratched and just waiting to peel. Test drove it, and OMG I WANT! This was my first experience with the S4, and have fallen in love. SO MUCH TORQUE! most fun test drive I’ve ever been on. Came back to the dealer, and checked the car over a bit closer. The trunk didn’t open unless you hit the button on the remote. I popped it, and water comes draining out everywhere! Uh oh… It had been raining a couple of days ealier, and I could have expected a bit around the trunk seals, but it was coming out from behind the trunk liner, the handle inside to close the trunk and down the hinges. Not talking a few dribbles either. However it got in there, I can imagine that’s the culprit for the trunk release not working. I talked a few numbers with the dealer, and told him what other dealers and kbb value was. He was surprised at how low the it was, and even tho he didn’t know a thing about Audi’s, he looked up what other 3.0 A4’s were selling for at auction’s around the country. With similar mileage in the estimated condition to be the same, $7-8.5k! I was much happier! However, he informed me straight up that the dealership would not sell the car for anything less than what was listed. He also told me they owned the car for $18,300. At that point, I knew I wasn’t going to buy the car, and he asked me some reasons what I would be worried about with this particular S4. I told him the primary issue being the trunk and water leakage. The second primary issue was to make sure the timing chain and maintenance had been done, otherwise it would be another $1-2k job to replace as you had to pull the motor. He simply responded well that’s interesting. As I left, I definitely noticed the difference in engine/transmission, and was astonished by how big it actually was. My A4 was the next step below an S4 at the dealership, and it just proved how big the gap was between A4 and S4 in driving experience.

So there’s a long winded story about my car’s trade-in value from a dealer. I’m going to try and find a clean example of a 225TT Roadster to test out, as well as another S4 Cabrio. Just to compare the difference between 1.8T Coupe and Raodster. Also cause I really think I want an S4, but still scared of the potential maintenance headache the 4.2 could be without records.
I do love my 3.0, but just getting a bit bored with the 4 door sedan aspect. I will continue to mod the 3.0 until I’m satisfied, or that I’m done with the project. I don’t really need a completely practical car as I’m 25, and it’s only ever me and 1 person. I don’t haul around everybody or a lot of stuff either, so the drop top sounds great! Plus, donuts in the snow with the top down… :stuck_out_tongue:

Great post. interesting to read

Hope you get your hands on that s4 soon!

The 4.2 is a blast. No matter what year you get. You can get a A6 and there still great cars. The S4 would open up a world of power to you.

I don’t see the 3.0 ever being a TQ monster. The motor however looks like it can have a M3 type of power band with lots of top end. From what the whispers are you might want to take a deep breath as JHM seems to have really pumped some life into the 3.0 from what Ive heard.

Thanks. I didn’t realize I wrote that much! haha

I’m not giving up on the 3.0 just yet. I will hopefully wait till JHM releases their products (HINT HINT) and see what they do. I’m already anxiously waiting the cat-less downpipes to rid myself of at least one known bad cat. That plus the tune should hopefully tide me over for a while.

Maybe JHM should release a video of a fully tuned 3.0 against a stock 4.2 for my own comparison. hehe

The S4 is great, but the additional cost doesn’t stop at initial purchase, so just be warned.

But in reality, you can find some great deals on them, no reason to pay anywhere near the dollar figure you’re looking at if you can afford to look around and possibly not buy locally. You also should stay away from early-mid 2004 build dates, and lower miles is better b/c as you know, the timing chain is a major job. But the S4 has some easy power to get out of it with the right mods. Best luck looking and glad ya had fun test driving the different cars.

P.S. It’s when I drive in the Chevy/Ford/Jeep/Etc dealers that the service and sales guys come out to figure out what they heard pull in. I go to the Audi dealer and they barely notice me, I find it kinda funny b/c in good shape I should be able to run with a V8 R8 I’d imagine. But they just see the last body style A4 or S4, don’t know what DTM is, and know it’s not a new porsche or 2012 A4. . .

Great write up.

I like the look of TT’s, but its their quattro system that ruins it for me and the interior feels a little cramp as well. I have spent many hours contemplating a B6 cab, I think they just look good. If you went that direction you would at least be able to put people in the backseats in an emergency.

Have you thought about finding a really nice low miles 3.0 cab

I’m somewhat aware of the additional $. I’ve been fortunate with my current 3.0 and not having massive problems… yet.
I don’t see why the Cab is such a higher $ than the sedan still. I realize they were more new, but does that still warrant the premium 6-8 years later? If I’m serious about the S4, I wouldn’t hesitate looking further from my local 100 mile radius that I have been. I’m one of those guys who has to see and drive it before I buy it before committing. So that does tend to limit my range of possibilities. Ebay scares me with auto purchases. If the car was brand new, and I was dealing with very limited production numbers, I wouldn’t be scared to purchase cross country, but lets face it, I’m nowhere close to being able to afford those kinds of cars.
The S4 Cab is kind of a different beast in it’s appearance too. It’s very understated, no flared door blades, or larger front bumper, you can’t really tell the seats are that much different until you open the door, and no trunk spoiler. The only real giveaway would be the the sound as you drive of or the little red badge if someone knew what that meant. Oh, and maybe the brushed silver mirrors on a non-silver car.

Sometimes I love the TT, other times the front overhang just bother’s me. But overall, it’s a win in my book. It would definitely take some adjusting. I was surprised at how big I felt inside, and I’m not a large guy. At 6’ 145lbs, I wasn’t bursting out the seat or top, but everything just felt a lot closer than I’m used to in my A4.
I don’t really know for sure, but do you notice the difference between the awd systems in everyday driving? I’m not 100% on this info, but the TT uses the VW 4motion system which is Haldex if I’m not mistaken. So it is primarily split 80/20 during normal conditions, and then transfers to something like 50/50 when loosing traction? Whereas the Audi Quattro is always 40/60 no matter what… I think.
Before I purchased my A4 Sedan, I was willing to drive a 3.0 Cab and loose the manual to gain the drop top fun. But now that I’ve driven the 3.0 6spd for a couple years, I don’t want a 3.0 auto and all 3.0 Cab’s are auto only. :frowning:

The TT’s do have the haldex unit which is mainly FWD and has that torque split you mentioned. Normal driving you wouldn’t notice it, but once you start pushing it you would. I drove a TTS on the track and the rear end would go light going into a corner and you could push it into lift off oversteer (I prefer oversteer when you can control it with the throttle) I spose you would learn to drive it differently to get the most out of it. The A4/S4 does have the Torsen quattro system which is 50/50 split, once you get to B7 05.0 then the 40/60 split appears.

If you find a clean TT or S4 cab you really cant go wrong, it has 4 rings and quattro whats not to love.

Also if you got the 3.2 TT, you can get some nice turbo set ups for it. I believe the 3.2 is more closley related to the VR6 than the 3.2 in the A4.

I thought I was pretty close with that info. I remember reading somewhere that the split was 40/60, but didn’t know what cars actually had that versus something else.

I’m really intrigued by this little guy…

and then I saw this:

and this: but I’m a little concerned about the dealer. He’s been questionable with service of vehicles.

I own a 3.0 2004 cab, I have everything except for navi. The window sticker to my car was $51k and change.
I paid 29k for it 6 years ago just about. I also looked at s4 cabrio’s but I could not justify the extra $10k-15k at the time for a v6 cabrio and the b7’s where also out my $ range and I didnt like the b7 as much at the time either.
If you buy any audi droptop make sure the back window has a good seal to the top around the edges, they like to bubble up and split. Turns into expensive job. I’ve done 2 mk1 cabrio tops myself, when I looked at the audi a4 top I almost shit myself lol…lucky audi did it under cpo warranty at 99.5k…ftw!!

Wow, that’s nuts the 3.0 cab priced up to that much. The Monronery label for my B7 S4 was $55,195. (you can call AoA with your vin and they’ll mail or email your Monronery label for free). I bought it 3.5 years ago with 39k on the clock at the time.

I wish Audi’s cost that much here, My car new had a list price of $85,800 and I bought it April 2010 for $25K. The 3.0 cab list price was $105,000, There was a 04 S4 Nogaro Cab used for $65K not so long ago.

Maddog, do you think Audi ever thought the B7 S4 would ever turn into what you have made. ;D

ohhh fuck, thats nuts… is that corrected to USD?

No its still in AUD, but it wouldn’t make much of a difference the current exhange is $1AUD to $1.01USD

It gets worse those list prices were from 2002 when the exchange was $1AUD to $0.56USD

ahh alright, I figured it was about equal but just wanted to check

holy crap that’s crazy money! I do remember reading an article comparing the new A5 Cabrio to other’s and with the 2.0T engine, the list price was somewhere north of $60k. For that money, you should be getting a base S5 Cabrio! But they loaded it up with ALL the goodies and was a pretty sweet ride. I’d have a hard time justifying the price of a fully loaded A5 model to a base S5. Especially when the S5 already comes very well equipped.

But anyway, I have a feeling that all of this car searching is for nothing now that JHM has released some more news about the 3.0. I was/am getting bored with my A4, and the prospect of something different is appealing. But certain modifications to my current car usually has a tendency to make me fall in love again. Like the suspension and wheels did.
