The New Guy

Hello All! I am the proud new owner of a 2010 S4 and I’ve trolled around and finally ended up here…

This seems like a knowledgeable group that is more down with actually getting their hands dirty than just posting speculation and hypotheticals.

A little about me:

I started out with a 2004 VW Jetta 1.8t and have been in the Maryland VAG scene since, been to Waterfest a few times and just about every H20 since 2003. I’m currently in Raleigh, NC staying hot as hell.

My main questions are, how has the DSG been treating everyone? I’m loving it but have reliability concerns, I feel like they may be overblown and I certainly don’t want to drive around with anxiety over if the trans is going to fail…

I’m at about 42,000mi and I will go in for an Audi inspection before 45k, anything I should ask for or be more observant to?

I’m thinking just intake and tune (APR or GIAC) not trying to start any wars…lol but anything else you all deem worthwhile?

Are the Audi service bulletins like recalls? as in, should I ask for them to give me a new trans flash or anything regarding them or should I trust their judgement on their findings?

Is anyone near Raleigh? I’d love a meetup.

Thanks! and sorry if this isn’t the correct place for this post but I didn’t see welcome thread or anything like that.

George

Welcome

There are very many smart and super educated guys on here. In all sections. There was a dsg thread not too long ago. It did seem disturbing but with a warranty left you should be able to get most of any issues looked at under warranty.

Any pictures?

No. Technical Service Bulletins are like newsletters between shops saying hey if you have this problem then do this to fix it. Recalls solve major problems that have happened to the vast majority of those models.

Welcome!

I love the DSG! I tracked my B8 S4 quite a bit and never had a problem.

Here you go, she just needs a few things to set her apart. No front plate in NC is a beautiful thing!

Awesome! Happy to hear it.

Thank you for the info, good to know!

Welcome to the forum!

As for your questions, I have a 2010 and my DSG has been awesome however, I don’t daily drive the car and it only has 8,2xx miles so take it for what it’s worth… I do however probably have about 200+ drag passes and I beat the piss out of the car whenever I drive it… The tranny can be quirky but if you understand it’s beahviors you can drive it just fine w/o issues… I get a hangup every once in a while when drag racing but that’s about the worst thing… My car shifts at redline everytime and holds gears unlike others have reported…

You can’t go wrong with APR or GIAC, I have used APR on all my other Audi’s so I’m somewhat bias and they were first to market so it wasn’t really a choice for me… GIAC currently has a DSG tune but APR’s will be out soon… I know that has been said for a while but trust me it will be out soon…

I believe ElRomano is from NC somewhere not sure of others… Again, welcome!

Hey George,

I’m in Raleigh as well. I dunno a whole lot about the b8’s, except from what I’ve read, but you’re in a good place.

Welcome to the forum! Good to have more B8 guys on here.

Welcome.

…and from the data shared thus far, they appear to be entirely unnecessary on the non-rev-restricted 2010-2012 DSG cars

If it wasn’t obvious primetime has been beta testing the DSG tune for APR for a while. And he is the worst secret keeper EVER.

I thought he was testing for EPL?? ;D

I think an intake and a tune are the way to go in terms of basic performance mods. With the issues I have had with my AWE exhaust, I am not sure if I would do it over again. They have been shown to add very little power also.

By all accounts the Roc-Euro is the way to go in terms of an intake. It will add some nice (needed) sound if you decide not to do an exhaust. APR or GIAC are both good options for tuning…

I always think a nice set of light wheels and a drop are needed mods, but that is obviously a personal thing. I just think wheels are the one way to truly set your car apart from others.

All great advice.

Lw parts always help and in the b8 case, the stock wheels and tires (peelers with dunlops) weigh about 60 lbs which is insane. Get that to 50 with some Michelin PSS and BBS CHR and you’re looking at great performance gains and still looking good.

Awesome! Thanks everyone for the advice, Roc-Euro intake is probably my first mod since I’d love to hear the S/C whine a little and then pick up a tune. Any shows in this area where I could maybe catch a discount?

This is great info, I’ve had APR before and had zero issues with it. A DSG tune would potentially be a plus if it does provide any type of improved reliability but I’m sure thats hard to measure as anyone with a failure would probably blame the trans tune and if there was no issues you can’t exactly attribute that to the tune either…
