the v10 s6 project

First off welcome.

Second off. I wouldnt worry just yet about getting a new motor. Depending on the price we can help you work through the money you would have to spend to get it in good working condition. and thats if there is any issues with the car. These cars are actually pretty good when it comes to how they do with mileage. You would want to get a car fax to get more info if you can but over all we can all help you get an idea on the condition of the car if your able to do some stuff on your own.

As for JHM its great there involved and you cant go wrong sending the car to them. They have invested in the V10 market and they are currently involved in the V10 market. For those of you who dont know them its a very very good thing they are involved they are a company that is customer driven and very involved in each platform they sell to. In other words they dont just make a few parts and leave the community like other companys. They have great parts available and still developing parts for this platform. They are a great company to support

Thanks for the response. I wasn’t too worried about putting a new motor in immediately. As for the price, its $9000, and it’s been on the market for a bit so I was going to offer 7k. At that price for that platform I think is an amazing deal. First thing that will be done is a carbon cleaning, that’s a given. What should I look for when I go test drive it?

You have done your home work. Carbon clean and JHM intake spacers both are great for power and health of the motor.

Idealy you would have a vag com when you go look at the car. I would suggest you do the normal Pop the hood to see if the motor is warm. That is the first sign that something is not good. With a cold motor you can start it and see how it idles and warms up. Check to see if the car runs rough. Dont be too worried if it does most of the time carbon and the SAI system can cause the car to warm up rough.

From there on the drive go part throttle and look to see if the CEL flashes on the dash then go WOT and feel if the car is smooth and no CEL. All together you want to make sure there are no codes no CEL on the dash and if there is a CEL on the dash and the dealer says its for X or Y make sure on your test drive to go to a Autozone or something like that to have them read off the codes.

If you had a vag com you could read off all the codes and check for last time the ECU was reset.

Other than that check the oil after the drive and make sure to coolant is topped off.

If things go well let us know. If you drive the car and your not sure dont get the car come here post any questions you have and we can all help share what we know

Price wise thats a good price but that is also a higer mile car. So know unless they have paperwork on all the work done to the car in the last two years that some of the cheaper price will be offset by some of the maintanence you might have to put in it

I will pick up a vag com. I work at carquest/advanced and get a discount. Thanks for all the info. I’ll probably make a trip up there this weekend to check out the car and see how it is.

Just remember optioned out these are 80-100k cars OTD when new. With that said if it’s been maintained and you plan to maintain as a border line exotic that you plan to drive every day you will be fine. Remember consumables alone are not cheap but they are cheap relative to Ferrari Lambo R8 etc. but don’t expect Lexus costs ;). I’d say Porsche is between Lexus and Audi, but Audi isn’t much worse overall if you know the right people and are informed on problem areas. Honestly after having one I feel I uncovered about 90% of the problems that was about 2-3 years ago now but I was EDIT: NOT active on this forum.

That said they are great cars just remember that even if kept stock, tires and even full brake job isn’t super cheap luckily many of the parts are shared with the a6 so as long as they don’t hit you for the s6 tax it’s not too bad IMO. just remember you have to almost double the parts cost overall vs somwthing like the v6 out of the a6

Good luck and my advice is pay about 1-2 grand more for a former cpo with documented service and repair as it will save you minimum 3 your first year and a lot of headaches and time

One way or another start a new thread if you have any questions or if you get the car do the same and start a thread.

+1 on new thread for new member.

Any updates on the project?

Wish I had something better to report, but the shop is still troubleshooting misfires on the car.

When we finally have it figured out, I’ll let you know.

Good luck, hope it’s all resolved soon. Hopefully the 911 is holding you over!

Any updates? With all the talk on JHM tunes I want to hear about the headers!

Im excited to hear more about this project as well. I think once her gets back into the v10 the old porsche will not see the same kind of attention.

hey guys!

The car sat for a little bit at the shop, but the plan is to get back working on it next week. I just dropped by today, and shot a few pics of the new dash. It has the alcantara dash, piano black surround, and carbon trim installed.

Pics arent great, but best I could do with the bright sun at the time

Wow that dash looks amazing. I have been looking at s6 cars as of late and the biggest turn off on the entire car is the dash. looks like you found a fix for that.

Thanks Justin!

For a number of years, I used to drive taxi. The main car at the time was the Crown Victoria…a massive boat if there ever was one.

The first thing I noticed when I sat in the C6 S6 was the dash looked weak, and too light grey. Too much like the base A6, and reminded me of the old boat…

OK, obviously not the same. But I did not get the feeling of a sports sedan, compared to the average run-of-the-mill audi 4-door sedan. This mod corrected that. And any A6/S6 can probably get the best bang for the buck by just getting the piano black bezel, or having a body shop spray it and polish. The stock grey is cheap looking, IMHO.

Anyway, in the end just more money down the drain for eye candy. LOL. But this whole project has been about taking everything to the extreme, so I guess it all falls inline with that.

Cheers man, and best of luck in your search for an S6. I dont know if CV told you, but I am the deal hunter, so please let me know if I can assist in any way  and I owe you one anyway man

Just read through teh whole thread

  1. holy cow man, 2 years without the car??
  2. those headers are TITS!!! Our S8 is new to us right now…but when its a bit older and we get yet another car…these are right on the list. the whole exhaust system looks very very well done. The headers are much nicer than those 10k ones (from japan i believe?) Nice, straight and looks equal length. The collector is VERY well done as well! The sound clip you posted was awesome, would love to see a dyno vid or drive by to hear it with the engine loaded

That Dash is a nice touch, looks like it flows with the seats too.

The headers and exhaust are made by CV. He has made headers for the 4.2 S4 the 4.2 S5 and the 5.2 V10 they are impressive . Powerwise they actually test them to verify that there are better outputs. It will be interesting to see how much further ahead V8A6’s car is then evryone else.

Thanks guys!

As Justin said, CV is the artist behind the headers.

And agreed, over two plus years is a LONG time. Especially since I have never really had the car in my possession for any significant length of time, since it was purchased way back in mid-2014. And a boatload of cash has been dumped into the project along the way. Hopefully, we will have the misfires (and now overheating) resolved soon, so I can finally get the ECU and TCU tune on the car that everyone else has.

Since we dont know root cause of the problem(s) at the moment, it is extremely frustrating and not possible to predict an ETA for completion. It could be on the road next week, or it might still be in the shop next year. In any case, I will be sure to post an update as soon as the car is running. Fingers crossed it is on the road before we hit 2017

Any speculation on what the problem is? Your car has been in the shop since I was in HS and that was quite some time ago! Do you think there’s a bad combination of mods or faultiness with the actual car?
