Thoughts on 93-98 supras...

30,000 is a very fair price for a clean Supra. Browse the forums and you will see that they usually sell in under a week. The demand for them is crazy.

Most Supras are just built to be highway monsters to take down GT-R’s and UGR Lamborghinis. If I wanted a 600whp car I have tons of cheap options. You can get that out of a C5 vette, F-Body, Mustang, etc. for under $30k WITH the build.

Saki, you are thinking that this car also has to be able to serve as a daily driver. I get that, that’s what makes the RS4 the great car that it is. To you, having two cars seems crazy but any 600+ car is going to be RWD unless it’s a 70k german car. A 350 hp car is boring and slow around here.

Saki,

What is your opinion on DSMs Evos, STis etc… I understand where you are coming from when it comes to big power and rwd and how you could be put into a disadvantage real quick. But what is your opinion on the tuner AWD cars? If you talked about it someone just link me to it because I am definitely interested in views on them.

Jake

They’re awesome, but they’re a little too 4 cylinder for my liking. I like my car to sound cool, and look cool and be fun etc. while also being a 4 door comfortable luxury-ish car. The Subarus are just straight hideous for the most part. The EVOs are ok, but too small and both brands are too cheap feeling frankly. But excellent.

Yeah, they are a bit cheap feeling. Or at least the ones I have been in. I do enjoy how light they are stock though. Helps a lot with the turbo’d 4 cylinders.

yeah 3250 lbs…and 400 whp is insane

Yup it’s fun, but you always want moaaarrrr!

Hey Jake, my buddy has ran through multiple Sti’s and Evo’s, as well as my cousin currently has an Evo X, I have driven all of them (3 of them at the local road course). Quite frankly, as much as I want to hate both platforms, for the money, wow, what performers. I watched him run neck and neck with a 997 GT3 at thunderhill, he was on an upgraded turbo and basic weight reduction (not trying to preach that a modded Sti = a stock GT3), pretty damn impressive to see him even in the same area code as the P-Car. The rattling and plastic feel would make it a hard car for me to drive it on a regular basis but as a cheap dedicated track car, no question at all.

Oh I completely agree! Fantastic cars when it comes down to performance per dollar.

I loved Japanese cars growing up. Was a huge fan of the GTRs (still am). Though I’d like a NSX more than a Supra (amazing how both hold value after so long). I still toy around with the idea of picking up a Z32 300ZX TT. I just love that car… Too bad we can’t legally own a R34 GTR here (grey market aside).

I was considering a Evo X MR before I got my B8 S4. But the interior just didn’t fit the price tag…

Though now, I absolutely love German cars (at least VAG/Audi/Porsche)…

My other car is a 400 awhp STi.

Performance wise, it can do everything well, in any condition. It is a track weapon, but also easy to drift and drive like a hooligan. Hard to describe how FUN it is to drive. As a driver’s car, it is a joy to drive it hard. It doesn’t bite you when you flog it, it begs for more. Very rewarding.

On the street, the power is ridiculous. You can pass anyone, anywhere, anytime. No gap is too small to pull out into highway traffic. Low speed, power on drifts are a piece of cake.

If you are looking for sophistication, forget it. It won’t make your passengers or significant others happy (unless they like getting tossed around like a rag doll while holding the oh-shit handle). You will catch shit for driving a kids car. You will have to pull over to have a phone conversation.

The car is unapologetic.

I’ve owned my '05 since new, 10 years this May, and can answer any questions.

I have a built Z32 300zx, really fun car, amazing power, not the cheapest to mod but a loyal following that is still into progressing the platform. My car is 614rwhp/524rwtq and with the mods that have come to market, my car is very far from being near the top of the board (I run twin Garrett GT2560 while the top kit before the GTX turbo’s release was twin GT3076, made just over 1,000rwhp with Spray) . The place that I go to get my car tuned, SpecialityZ, has a shop car with GT3071(s), it a did 8.95 1/4 at Fontana (Greg is also the IDRC champ for True Street Class)

What’s the engine mod list?

This is SZ’s blog that they talked about my build with dyno’s and mods.

Nice! I am interested to hear your opinion/review of that TD05! Any complaints?

It’s a very good turbo for driving a STi on the street, and Autocross.

For the Subaru 2.5L STi engine, there is a sweet spot somewhere around TD05/TD06 and 18G/20G. Rather hotly debated (and I’m probably a bit out of touch, as I haven’t changed my engine set-up significantly for several years). Choice becomes a compromise between responsiveness and peak power.

I AutoX the car, and off-throttle to on-throttle transitions are critically important to me. Therefore, I chose a slightly smaller turbo than most Subaru dyno queens and Interstate racers.

My one complaint is that while my TD05 18GXT spools very fast, it isn’t as responsive as the ported original equipment VF-39 that used to be in the car (when I ran it BSP class). [Aside: That turbo was like a light switch. I could spin all four 275 Hoosier A6s in second gear at throttle tip-in. Crazy responsive. It made the car very challenging to drive (too much wheel spin and unintentional drifting), but also very fun on the street.]

Hope that helps.

i dont think the supra was ment to be a drag car… more of a street car. Dont get me wrong there are some fast “track” ones out there but the street ones…

i might make it down to Texas this year for this just to watch the runs… but every year the supras Twin turbo lambos are getting faster and faster…
