Just curious, what are the first thoughts that pop up in your head(s) regarding toyota supras?
Fairly iconic. Beautiful cars. Fast in a straight line.
They are getting extremely hard to find and if you do find one its either beat to hell or it’s a clean built car with an insane asking price.
Outside of that they’re incredible. It’s an amazing platform to make big power on.
That car is unmatched in street car performance…when you spend the money… Icon is a great term. Still looks great today…
My dream car to be honest. I have always had the biggest soft spot for them. I could care less how fast it is.
My first thought is about my coworker and his Supra Turbo.
Ex-military, non-car guy. A by-the-book nerdy kind of guy, but very high integrity.
He married the daughter of a performance shop owner around 15-20 years ago (forget the year). As a wedding present, he received a built Supra Turbo.
He didn’t know what it was. Said it was too fast, and never floored it. He never understood why people honked and revved. He put the car up for sale a year later, and was inundated with calls. Removed the ad, raised the price, and was inundated again. Sold it that day.
I was laughing my ass off as he told me this story. To this day, I would wager that he has to be the only person in the world that unintentionally owned a built Supra Turbo.
Worst story ever…only because i got such a big reaction tto it…maybe knowing how much he sold it for would help
No, it wouldn’t help. LOL
I love the Supra, in fact, before I started to upgrade the S4 I was trying to talk the wife into one, the premuim that is being asked is nutz, wife said “Fuck No” when she saw a 94 going for $27k, not built. I will own a Supra, its just going to have to be the end around one, a Lexus SC300 with a 2jz-gte transplant.
Love them.
first thoughts: a bit too ricey looking and generally…dyno queens. Cars are so old something is always broken, and guys are scared to drive them because they like to break.
Great engine etc etc. Still doesn’t change much for me. I used to ABSOLUTELY LOVE the previous generations (II and III) of the Supra. I thought they were some of the best looking cars ever. That front end was iconic. Then this generation came out, and they charged $60,000 for it and I couldn’t understand it, and lost interest.
The ones I do see that make big to mega big power seem to always run the same. 11.2 @ 128 or 11.2 @ 154. Sure there are some 7 second (or faster?) monsters that do well, but the formula seems to be one that I don’t have any interest in.
RWD + POWER (400+hp to the crank) = useless power that can’t get put down. I made this determination a few years ago. I want my power to be my power 100% of the time. Not just when it’s dry out. Not just when I have some special tires on (that I need to install and remove in order to be fast). I’m different though.

What size tires are you running that you can’t put down 400hp (~350rwhp), ten speed tires?

lol yes. ten speed tires.
RWD + 350 whp is annoying. Go drive an E90 M3, bone stock and race an RS4, bone stock in 50 different situations. You will lose in 47 of them.
You don’t have to sell me, I m a believer, just ruffling your feathers.
It’s good though because people are realising this rule of thumb. The supercars are moving to AWD. The AMG cars are now (finally) moving to AWD. I don’t think BMW M will do it out of stubbornness. You can’t crow about RWD feel for decades and shit on AWD, then do an about face.
Think of Apple…their iPhone growth around the world has stopped. It’s actually losing market share. Why? The phones are too damn small. Unfortunately they ran a marketing campaign and a differentiation campaign saying that big phones were shitty and smaller phones were best. They have been eating shit-sandwiches being stubborn for 2 years while Samsung has become the biggest smart phone maker on earth. They will soon have to cave in and admit defeat by copying Samsung’s bigger form factor. In fact the current iphones are almost the same size as the Samsung S2 Apple was shitting on back in 2011…so they have already caved.
So will BMW…but I think it will take a while.
The Supra allegedly is coming back and looks a touch like the LFA type cars imo.

yeah, looks pretty crazy
I think they’re iconic cars for sure, but don’t really appeal to me. Honestly, a bit surprised how many people love them here. For me I can’t think of it without also thinking what people value them at. If they were $10-15k for a stock one, sure I’d say it’d be a blast and a fun build. But when nice stock ones start at $30k, and builds go to the moon, I just don’t see the appeal.
It’s now a 20 year old car, with often custom fabbed builds with multiple revisions, and always having some sort of problem. Either they’re massive turbos that are only good for interstate pulls, or they’re stock+tune without much to them (still fast but nothing stupid).
But the guys who are track junkies usually go auto as it holds more power and launches better, so that takes another level of appeal out of it for me. Personally I’d rather have a turbo M3 and have the same relative issues (getting power down) for the same price or less than a supra. Not as iconic or hold value as well, but it’d have more personal appeal to me.
Edit:
Just saw the picture of the new one. Holy shit that’s a jump! I bet it’ll sell like fire though. Wonder what pricepoint it’s going to hit (didn’t have time to read, if that’s listed my bad). I had seen a profile shot a while back and thought it looked pretty sexy though.
I would doubt that at the $16k entry level, that the new “Supra” will have the same ferocity as its predecessors, though, me being wrong is not an uncommon occurrence at our house…
Apple is way sicker than everything else.
