Thoughts on "Race Gas" Octane Booster

http://race-gas.com

Has anyone used this stuff before? Normally I don’t put any stock in octane boosters, but these guys make some pretty bold claims. Basically, you would add 4 oz. per gallon of 93 octane fuel to come out with 101 octane fuel.

I have limited access to race gas here in DFW. Basically I have to go one of the big racetracks; the closest being 30-40 miles away. Or, I would have to purchase and store it in my garage in 5 gallon containers (not ideal for where I live).

I have some top of the line snake oil that cures cancer and I only have enough to sell to one savvy gentleman. Let me know ASAP how much you’d like to buy!

Quick and easy,

By 4oz of this stuff and 1 gallon of 93. Run the 100 file, log, report back.

Check the chemical compounds in the container.

Chances are, its just repackaged Toluene or xylene. Several companies that sell “race fuel” have synthetic chemical mixes that include Toluene or xylene to help bring up the total octane. You can mix your own race gas at home by using one or the other. I have always been meaning to make a thread on that.

You can get great results just never go too far past 3:1 ratio

I am sure people would enjoy that write-up!

Especially the part on “how not to set yourself on fire” lol

No way 4 to 8 oz of toluene or xylenes can do that octane boost. Can practically guarantee this is MMT or similar organometallic compound. It’ll just coat your valves and foul your cats and O2 sensor eventually…

You can use 114 octane rating for Toluene to calculate the effective rating of your gas tank.

Example: 8 gallons 93 octane gasoline + 2 gallons 114 octane toluene = 97 octane in your tank.

Some 100 octane mixes have ~25% toluene.

In the early '00s, I had access to a large volume toluene waste stream at work, which I was tempted to put in my WRX. However, the sheer volume of toluene needed to boost the octane a few points didn’t make it practical for a daily driven vehicle.

Haha you and me both brother…MTBE, toluene, methanol, all abundant. Nice industry, you shouldn’t have left

I’ve used more MTBE recently…I could smell it in our local race gas here, and I got the idea to use it to add back volatiles to older race gas that’s been sitting around too long. Plus MTBE has got a bigger octane boost factor when blended…they use a different number when blending with lower octane rating fuels. More like 120 or so for MTBE. MTBE blended with Ultra 94 can easily work as 101-102 octane race gas, even if you mix 25% MTBE.

Toluene is neat I guess but it’s a really high boiler, and it has very late combustion. Can burn your exhaust valves out if you use too much. I think that’s why toluene home brew has a bad rep sometimes. Also toluene likes to separate out its water, which can be nasty if you pour that last dreg of toluene in your tank.

I’ve found in my research since this thread that indeed some companies selling 100 octane fuel have a 25% content of toluene in them. Seems to be the most stabilized additive.

if you have a 1/4 tank of 93 octane, and want to add something portable (1 liter let’s say) to make it 100, you need something that is 205 octane.

If you have 1/8 tank of 93 octane, you need 1 liter of something 153 octane

Seems pretty much impossible. Another example of the uselessness of high octane need setups for real world applications. For testing at the strip once in a blue moon? Sure it might work out. Otherwise, useless.

Plenty of areas around me with it at the pump for a reasonable price given what it adds to performance… $3 a gallon for 3 tenths and 3 mph is worth it to me especially since I drive 2k miles a year… But we’ve been over this before…

Indeed lol

Funny, I have never, ever seen race gas at a gas station. I live in the greater Toronto area, home to about 5 million people. My current car is an RS4 (3 years) and previously a b7 s4 (3 years). That means I have been to every gas station in the region at least once

Truthfully 3 tenths and 3 mph is solid. About 30 whp. 2000 miles a year is worth it.

Over 3 years, normal folks drive 15k per year. Thats 45,000 miles and that’s 100 tanks at a $50 premium per tank. That’s $5,000. That’s 3x a tune…when the tunes are already double normal tune price. That’s what most guys are willing to pay for stge 3.

You live pretty close to streetsville, closer than me. That’s where I pick up my race gas…that’s where they supply Cayuga from.

Jones’ setup (and many more before him on other platforms) with w/m injection on 100 tune made this pretty interesting for someone like me with a free supply of methanol. I worry about not having a failsafe though on the B8.

Is it a gas station or something altogether different? Its 20 kms away anyway. About equidistant feom you really.

It’s an odd place, go through the gate to a bunch of pumps and horizontal tanks and a couple of old guys inside the shop. And a LOT of steel totes sitting around with the components they use to make the mixes. The guy you talk to is the owner, and will tell you all about race gas in Ontario, and why there’s no real other players here. Apparently a lot of his business is selling to the US to boats and sleds and other non-automotive motorsports.

Saki, I was just having fun and if I did daily drive it I may think differently… Anyway, here is a fuel finder site and it shows 2 in the general area by you assuming it’s accurate…

There are a bunch by Niagra falls and such also, just not positive where exactly you are…

Yeah, they’re less gas stations than they are shops with cans of race gas. They’re also an hour away! Bowmanville is where our one legit track is. Mosport. That’s what the location you posted is…a fuel shop at Mosport.

Gotcha… Yeah we have a few Speedways that carry GT260 at the pump and a place called Chardon oil that is real close to me that carries it at the pump but they GT260+, MS109 etc has to be bought in drum/pail forum… The one speedway is about 5-7 miles from the house so that is where I always go and like I mentioned it’s about $3 more a gallon at $6.79…
