Throttle body sounds.

I’m well aware of the faint sounds & thuds that the TB goes through when the key is turned to the on position. As of late I have noticed it making a completely different sound and would like to know if this is any cause for concern or a sign of something to come. I’m big on preventative maintenance and like to take care of these issues as they come up.

The only way I can describe it is as instead of the faint thud and adjustment noises it now makes 5-10 rapid thuds like dut-dut-dut-dut-dut-dut. ???

It only occurs on a cold start or if the car has been sitting for several hours.

I scanned for codes and ran a TBA in VCDS but nothing has changed.

This is on my B6 S4 (build date: 12/03) with 113,000 miles.

This weekend I’m taking her in for: Apikol snub, 034 bracket, JHM LWCP, Serp. belt, and also replacing the tensioner and idler roller while i’m in there.

If there is anything that comes to mind regarding the TB that I might be able to address this weekend please chime in.

Edit for video:

strange, maybe try reseating the connector, and discharge the car (disconnect both battery leads and touch them together).

any strange driving characteristics once the car is going? I’d suspect if the tb was failing (never heard of that happening) there would be some drivability issues.

also maybe try visually checking it out, it should be very clean since the pcv draws into the IM and not in front of the tb (my hemi’s tb is caked in nasty oil because the pcv vac source is pre tb).

I would log the throttle body in normal driving and see if anything looks weird. Do some WOT pulls and see if it stays at 100%. I know when Jay did his badass runs in his B5, his failing throttle body was causing it to not open up all the way. Sucks if yours goes bad, they’re expensive

Beem, I thought the Jeep throttle bodies aren’t serviceable. We just picked up an '05 3.7 but the SM says you can’t clean it.

Thanks for the replies, other than the distinct change in sound I can’t notice anything regarding drivability etc…

I will continue to troubleshoot and hopefully log the TB as suggested and post back. I still haven’t logged anything in VCDS. Do you have the instructions to log the TB? I only found how to run a TBA when I read through the Ross-tech wiki.

I will also visually inspect it this weekend. I’m sure it has never been cleaned.

I think I found it:

Is group 060 the right one to log?

oof 3.7, those are plastic iirc (still learning mopar stuff bear with me)… the hemis are metal and get vile with oil. I’m waiting to clean mine until billet technology does a gb on their catch can… I may get a ported one but I’m trying not to mod the motor in this thing one bit.

I know the body is plastic, but I’d be shocked if the blade is plastic. Then again, theres some shitty parts all over the motor. The PCV valve on the 3.7 is a joke

its probably the same garbage pcv as the 5.7s… I’m tempted to get a diablosport tuner (probably the trinity) so I can shitcan the egr, but that’ll go against my promise to not mod the motor lol.

and the 2.0tfsi’s have plastic butterflies iirc so its been done

my throttle body just makes electronic like noises, been described by some as an electronic robotic arm moving under the hood. I have issues where it opens and closes rapidly during a cold start warm-up cycle, and have been told that’s normal.

I also tried the TBA and it didn’t help my cause, but I still think something’s wrong with it because on WOT runs my throttle body % always shows as 99.6% whereas most peoples show as 100% on logs. I wish I could figure it out myself.

I recorded a video during lunch. The sound is at 6 seconds, you have to listen over the chime.

I logged group 061 and it’s opening to 100% on WOT. I’m going to visually inspect and clean it this weekend and hope that takes care of it. We shall see.

not sure what that is, but looks like you went WOT for like 3 seconds, lol

I would say that looks pretty normal. Beem will know more
