Timing tool question B6 S4

Hey all,

I’m in the middle of doing my timing service on my car and I’m currently torquing the camshaft bolts to the final torque. I tightened the left side bolt on the drivers side head, followed the Bentley manual and removed the camshaft holder tools. Went to put the hall sender tool back on and it didn’t line up with the bolt it sits on top of on the left side.

Below are some pics.

My question is should it be off a little bit. I can get the tool back on if I move the adjuster then it lines up. Is my timing off a tooth when I installed the mech adjuster?

yes i asked this on another forum, got one decent answer but this forum is a little more hands on so i hope to get a few more in depth answers

TIA!!

you need to flip the tool to work on each side. the one angle wont let you get the tool on very easy and the ajduster can get in the way.

As long as you have the adjusters out the tool fits on both sides you should be in good shape. You did use the wedge tool when you tightened them right.

Also if you have the crank pin in that helps with any movement so you have less to worry about. What I would do to test is. Make sure the bolts are tight and if you can pull the tool off one side and have it line up on the other side without any issues you should be good. From there mark the chain and spin the motor over 3 full times checking the chain at the end of the third time. If you can put the tool back in after the third time you got the timing all set.

Was that helpful. Jimmy usually popps in to give his thoughts as well.

yes that was helpful. I actually have two of those tools, my kit had two of everything. I’m going to go back in a double check everything. Possibly take the adjuster back off and redo it just to give myself piece of mind.

I had the crank lock in too. One of the wedges popped out when i went to rotate the crank to see if everything was properly installed, maybe thats why. The tool fits perfectly on the passenger side, but as seen in the picture above the drivers side is off by a little bit. Someone on audizine told me it wasn’t an issue because the mechanical adjuster wasn’t pressurized. Not sure how true that is .

Go back and check. All I can say about the other site and the advice… There is a reason more and more people are leaving there to come here for good advice.

So true

Small successful update. turned the engine over again before touching anything. Passenger side timing tool wouldn’t fit now, lol. before it was the drivers side. timing was off by a little so i re did both sides. everything lines up perfectly now. i can even install the cam locks without using a hammer to gently tap them in!!

so i guess posting here was a success, thank you Justin!

We all apprechate the update.

Just think if you would have listened to the others on the other site you would have a big mess on your hands.

We are all here to help and Im glad I might have helped save your motor from damage. Its a big undertaking doing the timing system.

What we all say here to anyone that gets help here. If you found any of the posts helpful when you find someone in need of help on the other forums let them know to come here. Unless they are a troll or someone that clearly wouldnt fit in. If thats the case let them stay away LOL
