Tire Preference

It’s that time of year again where i have to replace my tires, well its that time of year everywhere at least twice.

I’ve gone through:

Pirellis 12k
Yoko 16k
Conti 16k
Michelins (Only got 20k out of 40k)

What tires do you prefer and why? I’m looking for suggestion for a new tire. The tire guy recommended Nitto 565R or whatever the new replacement is for the 555R’s but i’m a little skeptical about those. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have Conti’s EC2 i think on my car… only 9k miles in though so no real opinion on durability… they do perform great on track though lol

What characteristics are most important to you?

For a summer tire, you can’t go wrong with Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Michelin PSS

light
fair price
quiet
work well

If you burn through 4 tires in 20,000 miles that’s pretty impressive. How’d you manage that? My last set of PSS lasted for about 35,000 miles. Just about to change them for summer.

Those are what i have on my car now and i burned through those 4/32 left at 20k miles.

If i knew i would tell you but i’ve always burn through tired quickly here, in germany it was a different story or maybe it was exactly the same. It seems like all my tires last only 20k. I’m a relatively spirited driver though. One thing i don’t like about the michelins is that they started to trip the traction control after about 5 months in. Which i have no tune or anything just a new engine and tranny so that doesn’t make sense.

PSSs aren’t generally going to last 40K miles, but that’s not what they’re designed for.

My last set went about 25K miles. The tire dealer worked out a pro-rated credit with Michelin to get me great pricing on the replacement set, so to me, it’s all good.

You probably know this, but in general, long life and great traction/grip are mutually exclusive…

My .02 - after years of driving BMW M3’s of various model years and always having Conti’s on those cars, my S6 came with BBS wheels and new Michelin PSS. So…I don’t know if it is the combination of wheels/tires and all wheel drive or not but the Michelins have SO much grip, great ride quality and noise and are just all around awesome.

I have no plans to put any other brand of tire on my car at this point in time. My winter setup is Michelin X-Ice and they have been stellar as well. My wife’s X3 has Michelin HP4’s and they have also worn very well - minimal change in feel, road noise etc. Previously we had Continentals on the X3 as well but they didn’t retain anything like the Michelin tires have.

I think in this case you get what you pay for and Michelin tires are worth the premium.
