TMP Test & Tune (Nov 12)

Details:

Car: 2010 S4, SD, Stronic
Mods: APR stage 2 tune, pulley, Strat intake, 034 HFC, Milltek res exhaust, LW wheels

Track: Toronto Motorsports Park
Track conditions: Bad, no glue as it was to cold to stick to the track, as a plus we hot laphotlap at will!
Weather conditions: DA =500 to 600 w/ 25mph tailwind (UNFORTUNATELY) :frowning:

NOTE time slip timeslip printer was broken…after each run we need to travel to the second floor of the observation tower to get a hand written copy of our slip from their master print sheet…I asked the operate to take the master print sheets with me to help the vetting process on these forums.

Image will be posted soon…sorry

My own observations:

Car ran strong…the stronic sucked b@lls! On over half of the runs I had a hang up on the 1-2 shift or the 2-3 shift, and in extreme cases both…I also noticed the hang up was more pronounced (Sak if you think it was bad that first time you haven’t seen anything yet). This is inline with my theory that the hang up is a safety feature built into the tranny software.

Wind was also a factor…it was pretty strong…mainly at our back and pushing us slightly right…I wish there was absolutely no wind as I don’t know how much of a factor it played in these times.

Intake seemed to help big on the top end. For reference I was at the strip two-three weeks ago with my best time being 12.395@112mph. My best time yesterday on pump gas was 12.059@114mph! I picked up over 3 tenths! I’m sure that was not all due to the intake, hot lapping, the weather, and wind also contributed.

Thoughts and comments are always welcome.

Great times! Congrats all around. Lastly, tailwinds are a fortunate occurrence no unfortunate. ;D

81…go update your post (if you copied this on AZ and AW) as you keep saying you were car 366, but you were 336.

otherwise, good times, and don’t sweat the tailwind. I mean what is it…maybe a tenth or so? Hopefully someone will chime in.

Also, your cars pull so hard, even with a shortshift, it’s not like it’s knocking you into a shitty part of the RPM curve. There isn’t one! So I don’t think the shortshifts are too detrimental. The hangups though are a pain in the ass. No idea what they cost you.

great post and those are some super solid times.

A quick point on the tail wind. While there might have been a strong enough tail wind to help this shouldn’t detract from your time. Your time is in line with PTs time and shows your car to be where it should be. Not only that but its going to be hard for anyone to quantify that the tail wind was perfectly positioned in such a fashion to help the car. Fact of the matter is the tail wind could have been at a angle that was not from the front but not directly from behind thus making for a cross tail wind thus not helping but hurting the times.

Still after its all said and done your time is your time and its a solid one at that.

Great job David… I was so stoked for you when Kavan emailed me telling me you hit the 11’s! Yeah not sure how much if at all the wind helped, like Saki said maybe a tenth… Told you the intake would help ;D You and I need to hit 11.5’s or better next year  I am hoping to get another crack or two at the strip before the end of the year but the weather will determine that…

tough to say what the 1320 can do. The RS4 and the S5 were in the 11s on pump gas, but neither one really had much done in the way of supporting mods. The RS4 ran 11.83 but with stock exhaust, downpipes, fully catted, and a stronger clutch. I believe it had an intake, which on the B6/7 cars has been shown to do just about nothing. The question is would the car be any faster with full exhaust, or was the 1320 maxed out already? The Eaton M90 kits that were out used to run mid to high 12s or so on the B6/7 cars because the blower was maxed out. Even if you added headers, catless downpipes and a proper exhaust, you weren’t really any faster because again, the blower was maxed out.

Guess there’s only one way to find out!

I do know that this RS4 in the video was TVS1320, JHM tune, full JHM exhaust…and it absolultely destroyed the stage III B5 S4 camera car in the video (full VAST stage III with full exhaust, meth, ER intercoolers). That RS4 would have to be the fastest TVS1320 Audi in the world.

Voltron - Thanks man. Great times with the V. Like I said in the other thread, I would worry about traction over HP/TQ at this point.

Sak - Your always so picky! lol! Just remember if you had come I would have video footage of the runs for everyone. lol! I will post on AZ and AW once I get a legible copy of my best time from Kavan.

My S5 - Thanks man…and thanks for clearing up my concern about the tailwind/crosswind!

PT - Thanks a bunch dude! Just so people (who don’t know you) know what a great resource you are, PT was the guy who determined that my post pulley car was not performing and helped me gather evidence to forward to APR to have my issue resolved. He also was the guy who suggested getting an intake, more specifically the Strat intake based on his own experience. So to sum up, he is very much responsible for the current performance level of my car.

I thought JHM was using the Vortex blower?

what…about the car # thing?

OK…go on there saying you were car 366 and then post sketchy timeslips for car 336. Someone’s bound to raise an eyebrow. Just trying to keep you sharp!

True, I may have video’d but I don’t think I would have stayed all day, so I wouldn’t have had your 11.9 unfortunately. How about ilspezzaneve? He’s looking to go back soon.

It’s a Vortech - and they are. Haven’t even put it on an RS4 yet.

This car in the video was an APR TVSr1320 kit that ran 12.7 @ 108 a bunch of times (like all the APR RS4 SC cars did initially) and the owner was pissed. HE spoke to a friend who happens to tune for JHM, and when the JHM employee contacted APR, APR asked JHM’s tuner to have a look at the tune to see if he could improve upon it. Keith at APR specifically. Well, improve upon it he did! He wrote a new tune and it ran 12.0-12.1 @ 117-119. Then APR used this tune as the base for an update that they gave everyone with their RS4 kit, and on the S5 kit.

You starting to see why B6/7 guys who have moved to the B8 S4 start a ‘when will JHM tune the B8’ thread every 3 weeks?
