Can i buy this boot seperately, anyone have the part number? Im hoping i dont have to replace the whole driveshaft they are about $670 per side !

If the joint is ok, you can buy just the boot kit. It consists of the boot, 2 clamps, a couple of retaining rings and the CV joint grease.

Yes, you can buy just the boot - I was looking at the procedure yesterday and it required removing the control arms, pulling the knuckle off the axle and pulling the CV joint off.

With the exception of the pinch bolts (WTF Audi, you’re the only one I know still doing this; it sucks), it doesn’t look too difficult although you’ll probably want to do this with a good impact wrench…

I’ll probably just replace the CV’s as well, they’re not terribly expensive along with all the control arms and bushings. Your halfway there doing the boots anyway…

I had my right front axle out this summer and I did not have to screw around with the pinch bolts at all.

I just removed the heat shield and turned the steering wheel to the opposite lock. You unbolt the inboard joint from the axle flange and there is just enough clearance and flex in the joints to slide the outboard end out of the wheel bearing.

cheep

Thanks for the info it passed the inspection even with the boot torn, the guy had a bit of a hard on for the v10 rumble

Its booked in to get replaced on Tuesday. Is it worth getting the Outer Cv boot done while the driveshaft is out?

getting it done as in replacing it? I’m guessing the CV has to be repacked whenever the boot comes off, and the retaining rings look like they’re one time use items… Couldn’t hurt, they’re pretty cheap at $20 per and it’d be a lot cleaner than trying to scoop out the old grease.

Here’s a whole axle assembly for much less than the $670

…but FCP is showing 2 different part numbers for axle assembly, one’s $100 more than the other - front vs. rear?

Yes, i mean get the boots on both ends replaced while the driveshaft is out off the car. Knowing my luck if i just got the torn one replaced the other would tear a month later

I’m starting to know those feels! Your original post made me go check mine last Saturday - thankfully they look pretty good! My brake rotors though…good lord.

I absolutely LOATHE the pinch bolts VW/Audi decides would be a good idea to use for their upper control arms. One winter here in the northeastern part of the US and you’re taking a torch out and ruining the outer ball joints on both upper control arms.

If I recall correctly, I think there is even a special tool for this very task to make it easy for Audi techs to get these bolts out.

Audi? Special tool? They NEVER do that… ::slight_smile:
