Torque converter

Hey guys I was wondering if anybody had experience fixing P0741 torque converter clutch stuck.? I had an error coming up a few times in the last 4 month, however yesterday the car started shaking trying to move and shift through the gears. Check engine light was flashing and then remained on.this morning I took it for a test drive. No problems, no CEL. I did replace oil (OEM audi) and filet about 30k ago and did not have issues until now. Does anybody knows a good transmission shop where this thing can be resolved. I have a feeling that taking my car to Audi will cost me the price of my car. I heard that in the most cases it’s pressure valves itself and not TC that causes the above issue.

Lots of threads on this, likely: your torque converter likely isn’t locking up, either due to a torque converter heading south, or a lockup solenoid failing. From what I’ve seen, usually it’s the more expensive #1. My brother’s in the same boat with his 2.7T tip, I’m trying to steer him to spend for an upgraded TC so he won’t have to do the job again.

Replaced on 2 of my cars. Same job on the 2.7 as the 3.0 . If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask

So how does upgraded TC deviates from stock? I assume if i go to the dealer i will be getting the upgraded TC. Is there a part number for 3.0 quattro / AVK?

You can send your tq converter to a company like level 10 or a company like that. I would strongly suggest againsed it. Go oem and get the jhm tip chip. Oem tq converters are strong and use great parts. Aftermarket take the stock tq converter and modify the fins. No one ever replaces the acfual clutch at the botfom as you need a special tool fo do it… the manufacturer builds it from thd gdound up.

Hey jfunkey, explain more. You are saying the upgraded TCs from 2bennet, level10, etc are just different stall and not actually stronger components…?

Curious before we get something “upgraded” for my brother’s tip. I know shit about automatics.

True, some claim furnace brazing of the clutch packs, but in the end still the same OEM parts, maybe jsut modified a bit.

I would also buy OEM if I were to do it again. The “Monster” stage 2 converter I have in my allroad has some undesirable characteristics when cruising on the highway.

Listen to Chris on this one

No stronger… I actually repaired a converter YEARS ago that was built from one of the aftermarket tq converter places… it woukd take a few pages to get really in depth on whats done and why. None of the structure parts that are going to be critical are changed…little seals and bits are changed but none of them are trully better then the oem…

The claim is always… holds more power or helps transferr more power…the theory is that they do…lots of that stuff is controlled in the tcu… the modification to the fins generally is a disaster to actual drive ability…

Yup

Thanks guys…all good info.

The cost on the Torque Converter (OEM) is $ 1,251.00
Also you will need 3 bolts ……………….$ 1.70 Each
Also you will require a seal …………… $ 46.51
And a thrust washer …………………………$ 10.00

Than you will need to top up the transmission fluid

Transmission oil ……$ 34.00 a litre

Where did you end up going, or DIY?

Unfortunately I will be rebuilding mine at local shop in Toronto. Can not spend over 2k for oem.Planning to drop of my car Next Monday.

I would also change your transmission fluid/filter along with replace the rear main seal plus top off the center diff fluid at the same time. That way you save on labor and don’t have to mess with the other stuff later on. That is what I am going to do with my mother’s car once my car is off the lift.
