Transmission overheating

Well the transmission went up to 122C and I cut it off but it definitely at 110 kept cooling it there for a bit of time until it went to 120

I checked the transmission coolers and they were fine I blew air into them and it came out freely. Car is still overheating. I have no idea now why it’s doing this. I guess I’m going to have to install a external radiator at this point

I wonder if it could be the thermostat? But I changed it How hot does the engine get. I saw it 108 Celsius yesterday when I was checking transmission

Yea mine runs hot like 104degc but never much more than that. Tough call, I had to sell one of my d2 4.2s back in the day because I couldnt figure why it was overheating. Replaced everything.

I’m going to try to install another fan for auxiliary radiator and hopefully that helps

It seems to me it’s trying to cool it but it’s struggling

I know you have likely tried, but have you tried bleeding / burping the coolant system? Have the heat on in the car HI

Are your fans running at full duty cycle? Audibly loud when on?

I hate bandaging an issue just wondering what it could be…

I wonder the objective of the aux water pump to cool the trans and if that may still be the issue

I tried bleeding I haven’t tried burping it. The fans are running loud I think. it’s hard to tell because of how loud the car is. I believe the Aux is supposed to cool it. I bought a brand new one and put it in there. Maybe it could be with the electrical but I’m not getting any codes for it.

Do you think The transmission fluid needs to be changed or would a code show

I’m going to stick a fan on it today but if that does work I’m going to change the fluid. I think if it was something else it would show on the Ross tech. The car doesn’t slip until it gets very hot. It shifts fine and strong still so it has to be something stupid I’m over thinking it

For clarity sake, are you stating trans oil temps here or trans coolant temps?

I found some ZF 6HP26 documents that state proper operating temps are “ok” around 120degC for the trans oil temps

If my car was not down rn I would help by looking and sharing my temps and data but I’m about a month or so away from putting it back together

If you haven’t you want to make sure that the transmission fluid is actually moving and getting pumped through the coolers and back to the transmission.

All Automatics have Aux rads due to the extra heat produced. Temp wise remember the transmission is using the fluids as hydraulic fluid so it’s going to get hot.

I drove and beat on my B6 pretty good and see 110C after e beat fest.

The fluid temps need to get over 91C just to clean and evap out any water or contaminants

I’m still sitting parked and it hasn’t moved Up or down in temperature I think it’s holding the temperature up to high even though it stops. It can’t be clogged because it would of kept going up and as I’m texting this to you the temperature went down by 1c for the control module and fluid. So I think it’s safe to say I need to install the fan

Yep the temperature is starting to go down while I’m sitting parked

By the way I didn’t have air piece on the aux rad and now I did so maybe it’s supposed to stay there

The fluid went down to 120c

A good test.

Take some cold water and throw it on the current transmission cooler rad unit or cooler itself. The temps should drop within 2 min.

This should prove that fluid is moving correctly and help with our theory.

Just a FYI your control module temp, if it reaches 130C the transmission starts to pull power. Almost all transmission Tq reduction situations start at just under 140C

Okay thanks I’ll try that

A garden hose in a pinch will work too… Just remember that if the hose is left out in the sun the water in the hose is going to be a bit hotter than from the pipe. You should see a 10c drop or a sizable change in temps over a few minutes time.

Transmission temps can rise quite a bit at a stand still due to the fact there is no air going past the coolers. Also you want to monitor the temps while driving at a constant state as well. I usually for testing just use the ice cold fluid test to start with.
