unlocking an Audi Syphony II+ radio

Looking at getting one of these radios to upgrade from my Symphony II deck (the one with casette) since the II+ is a sat ready unit.

The one im looking at MIGHT be locked.

Talked to the dealer and they say its about 1 hours work to get it unlocked by “plugging it in” to the system.

Is this something i can do with VAGCOM?

If anyone has ever done this before? I thought at the very least Carlos might have done this once before?

Is the unit you are looking at new or used? I know a couple people who have bought them new that the units usually come unlocked.

It seems like it should be possible to go through the Vagcom, but unfortunately I do not know. I was lucky when I installed my Nav I never had to input a code, and it doesn’t lock when you disconnect the battery. However I do have that code in a safe place just in case some random act of God smites my radio.

was looking at a used from a shady location!

But i might have found someone from the forums with 1 for sale too. waiting on a price.

But still good info to have if it saves us a 1 hour trip to the dealer.

Just get an RNS-e. Symphony 3 isn’t really any better than 2. Bigger screen (marginally) but there’s no real good information on it. Ipod still sucks.

RNSe2005 can be had for $800. RNSe2010+ can be had for about $1300. That’s the direction I’d suggest you go. When you sell your car, you can just part out the RNSe and put the old symphony 2 back in. Then you’ll get most of your money back. Won’t have cost you much if anything…3-4 years ago the RNSe2005 was $1100-1200 in the market, and now they’re $800. Total cost of 300-400 after you part it out. Buying a symphony 3 for $100 then paying $100 to unlock it etc…just doesn’t make sense.

I saw your referenced my name so I thought I would pop in.

The radio has a internal vin with its own unlock code. Generally we take the vin number off and just plug it into a system from there it pulls up the unlock code. It seems there is some sort of scheme on how the unlock code is figured out.

While I can promise nothing if you can get me the vin I can see if I can get you the unlock information. The only issue is, that if you have the radio loose they might want the vin of the car it came out of.

I would also recommend a RNS-E unit. over a symphony II. Either way. Ill do what I can to help if you need it.

i have been flip-flopping on this radio issue for at least 18 months now? if not more?

For 800 I could have really good aftermarket that looks very “oem” ish and plays dvd’s mp3’s ect ect…

The longest trips i do with this car now is driving to the dirty D now and then and thats it. Its just a “go to work” car.

Sure i would like to HAVE and RNS-E but im not even wired for the GPS and all that so really i would have a 5" screen telling me im on CD2 Track 5.

With the symphony II + at least i have the option of either hooking up that sirius module i bought for the A4 we sold (still not 100% sure it was DOA, ill need to test) or integrating the ipod. Since im changing phones in a month or so, my iphone 4 could get demoted to ipod duty in the car.

If i spend 100-150$ on a radio that leaves me 650’ish for a new clutch next spring perhaps? ;D

So to get the internal VIN i would have to plug it into my car and get it through VAGCOM? Im not sure i will be able to get the VIN# this radio originally came from. I dont THINK its stolen, but its not impossible. The joys and risks of e-trading!

bora are you joking? If you get RNSe you also get an antenna and everything you need to run it as a fully functioning sat nav unit. Why do you think we’re recommending it?
