Valve Guides

Does anyone have a source on valve guides for the BHF? I cannot seem to find them anywhere and since Audi considers them non-replaceable, ETKA doesn’t list them. I would rather not pay $10 each for IE ones on a stock head rebuild but that may be the only option. Some places make it appear that the 2.7T and 1.8T guides are close enough to be interchangeable with the 40V heads, but I am not certain.

Welcome you are in the right place. Lots of very knowledgeable guys on here.

From my research the 1.8T parts will work. I think even the valves are the same in some cases. Jimmy bones would be the one to ask. He has actually replaced the valve seals on the heads while on his car. I would think he would have the part number.

Thanks! I am in the process of rebuilding my engine. I had some major cylinder wall scoring, so I procured a much better-looking used shortblock and am using Sunnen AN-30 past to recondition the cylinder walls before reringing and reassembling. While it is apart, I took my heads to a machine shop for a valve grind, seals, and guides if needed. The shop called yesterday confirming that the guides are toast, so I went on the search yesterday and didn’t turn up much. However, between what you and others have said, I do believe that the 2.7/1.8 guides will work. I have 30 of them for my 2.7T build that I am doing, so I am going to bring them to the machine shop today for him to compare to the BHF ones.

arent the IE ones technically for the 1.8t? i thought so, which should make them interchangeable since i used the IE ones in my head build

On their site, IE has the guides listed as being for just about every Audi engine. However, in the applications section, under 40V it says “call to verify part number.” On ECS Tuning, they have a different part number listed for the BHF guides compared to the APB guides for the B5 S4, which is a different number yet from the base number on IE’s site. I originally thought it might be due to different valve lengths…the BHF does have valves that are 8-9mm shorter than the 2.7T (and probably 1.8T). However I eventually have concluded that they are really all the same, after bringing some 2.7T ones over to the machine shop.

Sounds right. I have a spare set of heads that have been ported on of the valves I got on the donor heads looked burnt so we replaced it and from what I saw it was the same as the 1.8T valve and I didnt need to replace the guides but the concensious was that most of the 1.8T hardware is the same as the 4.2 aside from obvious things
