vinyl wrapping the rs4 silver trim.

so I just JD graphics in waterloo, I want to vinyl wrap my silver trim black. the guy told me that he would have to put a primer on the trim and then wrap it because the vinyl wont stick to audi trim. he then told me if I were to pull the vinyl off because of the primer it will peel the silver off too. he also quoted me 750 bucks which I thought was high.

I want to vinyl it just in case I ever want to go back to stock. has anyone ever heard of this primer shit, of all the threads ive read no one has mentioned it.

looking for opinions and experiences and recommendations for other shops, I def want a second opinion.

I messed with mine. I used alcohol to clean the surface of any oils the might come from touching the trim. I never had any issues like he is saying. And can’t you get carbon fiber wrapped trim for like 1/2 that cost.

I know you can peel the trim cover coating off but it’s super hard. Whatever he is doing definitely isn’t what I know is normal.

3M makes a primer pen for vinyl installation.

It doesn’t remove paint, I feel like he is probably gluing that shit on.

That is expensive.

the carbon wrapped trim? who makes it? from the other threads ive read taking the trim off is a colossal pain in the ass. I believe the rear window U shaped piece is riveted on.

im thinking maybe this guy just really didn’t want to do the job. does anyone have a reputable place they can recommend?

What vinyl product was he going to use?
Most use 3M 1080 now because it does curves well.

1080 comes in a variety of carbon looks

OP this guy is taking you for a ride.

  1. It will not pull off the silver when you remove it. I just removed some shitty carbon vinyl from a set of brushed trim and this guy used 3m Super 77 which is serious over kill (used for headliners etc)
  2. you should not need primer, you can use it to make sure it last years but I didn’t and its holding up fine. Its a pain in the ass to get off btw.
  3. It costs about $50 in material

I did mine in a brushed black.

Why don’t you just get carbon fibre trim?

Bangoman might have an extra set he can sell you

I honestly thought a wrap would be the easiest to do but I guess not. as far as taking the trim off and replacing with carbon trim I hear removing the trim and replacing is an absolute bitch. ill try and find another place and get another quote but the only other place I found googling in Kitchener is signs galore and I don’t even know if they do cars.

carbon trim would look pretty bad ass especially if I do the trunk and hood too.

65vettec6, did u just apply it like window tint? and it held up on the exterior? and ya Im not paying 750 for a bit of trim and 2 mirrors.

sak, does the carbon trim come complete with the trunk piece and front grille or is it just the window trim.

I thought you were talking interior trim?

no sorry if I wasn’t clear, im talking about the brushed grey exterior trim. I have the interior carbon trim.

Ohhhh, I thought you mean interior too. The exterior isn’t to bad. Most places around here will do it for 200-250. Where are you located?

im in Kitchener Ontario but I wouldn’t be opposed to driving a bit for a good price and shop.

Package deal… I’m in!

Just like justin said, use alcohol to clean the surface it will stick just fine.

If you ever want to get crazy with interior trim, look up hydrographics

id be more than happy to pay someone 250.

im not sure I possess the necessary skills or patience to do it myself. I took at stab at window tint once and lets just say ill never try it again lol.

Hahaha sounds like me. Mine would be all wrinkly with rough edges, and there would be lots of swearing.

I looked into this a while back. Found a place to do it for 250. Then when it came down to it they said they no longer did it. Pretty annoying.

The wrap places are the ones I contacted

Google 3m window trim wrap maserati …there’s a good demonstration of YouTube of what needs doing.

Hey Saki, Im in too… again LOL

But, not until I get the new car back. So, it could be anywhere from December 2014 to March 2015.

I talked to a guy last time around who said he could probably do it, but he had to look at each of the cars. He said it is harder on some, because there is no edge or lip to wrap the film over the trim around some of the windows (I think the rear window). I want all chrome on mine covered black, including the chrome above the door handles and the trunk strip.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember the guy I called. Claudio from Vagkraft is great for resources for all this type of work. He seems to know everyone. If you guys are both ok with someone in the GTA, then I can contact him and get some numbers. Of course, if you know him you are more than welcome to contact him yourself.

Let me know when you guys are ready. If you can wait until I get my car back, even better. But I dont mind doing some legwork now if you cant wait until then.

So, we are in for you two for sure? Anyone else? Numbers help.

im down but keep in mind my car comes off the road for the winter. as far as driving goes anywhere in a 200km radius for me is fine and im ready anytime im off work right now so im pretty open. I don’t mind paying for quality work but I think 750 bucks for a bit of vinyl is outrageous.

thanks so much for doing the legwork and if you set it up I will def be there.

I had attempted to do this with some extra cheap CF vinyl I had left over. Everything seemed to work out well. Just the bubbles sucked butt. I am definitely getting it done or painting my trim when I get stateside.
