I recently swapped out the oil and just replaced it with white label stuff the dealer puts in (Castrol Syntec).
This is my first VAG car and am wondering what group III/IV/V oils people like to run.

Motul is usually the way to go. Excess 5100 is what it’s called I think. Mobile one is always good and so is royal purple but motul is on top of my list. If you want some badass shit and if your gonna track the shit out of your car get motul 300v. I think it’s like $30 a quart though its crazy.
ive always liked lubro moly i think its called liqui moly now
Ya that shit is badass, I took 5 of them once and was fucked up all night.
lol
I would go M1 0w-40. Can’t be beat for the price
I used M1 and now I’m trying out the Castrol. I figure the Audi engineers must have made the move for a reason. That being said there is an entire forum out there dedicated to oil nuts, if you care enough check it out and do the research for us.
Not that it’s particularly relevant to this thread, but I am burning oil like a motherfucker. Every couple months I get the MMI warning. Thing is, I hardly drive the car, so those couple of months couldn’t be more than 1000 miles driven.
Thoughts? Shld I be worried? Is my car destined for thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket repairs? Lol
Seriously, though. What do u guys think?
No oil puddles right? I picked up copper oil drain plug washers from one of the popular online retailers because it was in our section. Turns out we can’t use copper without it leaking…
I’ve been burning 1l every 5k or so consistently since about 10-15k miles.
I’m lazy. I’ve not changed my oil myself and let the dealership do it for my 5k and 15k maintenances. I have not had my oil light come on. I should buy a dipstick to see if I’m burning any. What’s going to happen to me for my mistreatment of my car?

No puddles at all. Car is definitely burning oil at a rapid pace. I guess I could just keep refilling. But I’m wondering about long-term damage. I’m not knowledgeable enough to know what the ramifications may be…
Using Castrol as well, but thinking about making the move to Motul.
I use to burn 1 quart every oil change (5k miles). Ever since going GIAC Stage 1 and now Stage 2, i’ve burned through a quart after only 3.5k miles. My foot must have gotten heavier… 8)

I had 2500 stock and 2500 on stage 1 and burned through .5 a quart from the MMI reading.
That has me thinking of switching to a higher rated oil, as I plan to track this car about a dozen times a year + daily driver.

But yes, going to a dedicated oil forum would be more beneneneneneenenficial – but with my baby boy only 72 hours old, time is limited!

Audi engineers don’t really have anything to do with Castrol. The factory fill is Fuchs, and most dealers just use Castrol because it meets VW502 and is cheap. They’d use other oil if they could get it cheaper, and some do. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of dealership Syntec, at least for the full 10k interval. I got Audicare for free because the shipping company let my car sit at port for over a week causing me to miss a promotion by a couple of days, so I do a change every 10k at the dealership, but I change it myself in between at 5k and use M1 Euro 0W-40. I might switch it up to Amsoil or something once I’m done with Audicare.

congratz on your baby
Says Castrol right on the oil cap. That said I have no clue how they choose their oil of choice. For all we know it could go out to the highest bidder with an oil that meets the requirements.

Fixed.
BMW says the same thing too.
I meant more along the line of castrol paying audi more than mobil but I guess it would make more sense like that.
Audi doesn’t use Castrol by choice, they use it because the get the oil for the cheapest and/or Castrol pays them to “recommend” their oil.
While Castrol SLX 5w40 and Castrol Edge/Syntec 5w40 both meet the vw/audi spec, its is nowhere near as good as M1, Motul, or any of the other boutique oils. I would run Castrol 0w-30 before their 5w-40. The 5w40 oils are group 3 while the others mentioned are group 4
Just run Mobil 1. It’s fantastic stuff
