what ever happened to the RS6 4.2 TT transplant into B7 RS4 in New England area?

RS6’s are pretty expensive to maintain, if you’re a DIY kind of guy then its definitely do able. IIRC RNSE can be added but I know its not quite simple plug and play, some wires need to be tapped under the dash and stuff.

A close family friend of mine had one in 04, he hung on to it for ~80k miles then dumped it because it was a fortune to maintain. Curb weight listed by Audi is just over 4000lbs. Brakes/tires are expensive and will need to replaced somewhat more often since the cars a pig. The service interval for the timing belt is 40k miles IIRC. I know the auto trans has gets finicky at higher miles and is prone to failure. You can however do an 01E swap.

IIRC you need an adaptor plate made so the trans can bolt up because only some of the OEM bolts line up. I think I remember reading somewhere that clutch masters made the clutch/flywheel done for the swap by the guys at Raven Motorsports in SoCal. Keep in mind 01E’s tend to have their 1-2 collar go so figure another grand just for parts to rebuild it. But even then you’d need to find someone to tune it. Oh yeah then theres also the DRC suspension which leaks.

Yeah, I’ve put a lot of time into plotting how I can get into an RS6.

lol great info noznab

like noznab said an adaptor plate is needed to space the trans, line up bolt holes, mount the starter properly. A custom clutch is needed because the RS6 motor is a 10 bolt crank vs an 8 bolt like other 4.2s…

look up steve ken and his C5 swaps, those will be the most thorough swaps

Interesting stuff, and thanks for all that info nozab!

Yea, I personally love the RS6, but combination of auto only, fat pig, and ridiculous maintenance costs have kept me from really exploring one further.

even with the timing belts up front engine still needs to be removed? that sucks if so, RS6 would be a sick family driver/grocery getter since it’s manual would need a seperate fun car.

fat pig - it weighs only about 150 lbs more than a B7 S4…and that could be attributable mostly to the turbos and the transmission. The turbos make that a moot point unless you like autocross (in which case an S4 is a fat pig too)

ridiculous maintenance costs - like what? Are B6/7 S4s any better? Sure brakes are more expensive but RS4/6 brakes need replaced every 40k miles unless you’re a track junkie (or a terrible driver). That’s an extra $750 every 2+ years. Big deal. The timing belt job is another one that is every 2-3 years. No big deal.

auto I guess would be annoying but to be honest if you have paddle shifters that allow you to control the transmission and have some fun, I can get past that.

This is the stuff I think that holds the RS6 back. Lots of people just wont consider it for whatever reason…most of which is blown out of proportion. Like the people who say they’ll never own an RS4 because of the carbon. That’s retarded…the carbon isn’t that big of a deal and if you can clean it for $100 DIY every 18 months (or for $750 at Elite or somewhere similar) is that really a legit reason to not own a car?

A) I’m a trak ricer for life! So don’t give me this bullshit about 1/4

B) It’s got to weigh more than 150lbs over the S4 doesn’t it??? (bigger body/sound insulation/windows/fluid capacity, iron block motor with iron rods, automatic transmission, bigger brakes/diffs/mounts, turbos and all their extra piping) I really haven’t looked into it, but I assumed it was several hundred pounds heavier.

C) I hadn’t looked, but I assumed maintenance was worse, especially most are higher mileage now. So you either buy one with 80k and sink money in into every part , or buy one with 30k for a high premium and sink money in it b/c the bushings are still 10 years old.

I think the rarity also doesn’t help. Means very little community or support for self diag/working/help/etc. The S4 has just about every DIY out there, or someone has done the job recently. When’s the last time you saw some DIY’s on the RS6.

I really do like the car, but the more dated styling, size, auto, and what I’d assume is weight, have held me back. It’s just a personal thing, I like big coupe’s and small sedans. The S4 is about as big as I’d like to go, and it already weighs a good bit more than I’d personally like it to.

^all 4.2s are all aluminum, the RS6 just has lower compression pistons which opens the door for substantially more power once some squeeze is added

and regarding weight, this is what I found for other curb weights:

RS6 Saloon is listed at 4050lbs
B6 S4 Saloon is listed at 3660
B7 RS4 Saloon listed at 3704
B8 S4 Saloon listed at 3638
B5 S4 Saloon listed at 3384

so its got a good bit of heft over a B6 (for what curb weights are worth)

I didn’t realise the b5 had such a weight advantage.

thats a weight for an early B5 though, I think they got pudgier

Looks like Josh got one

FWIW On the local Audi forum I’m a member of a guy with a RS6 is asking for some tuning advise, not important. Anyways he stated the car has a $2600 APR tune that the PO had purchased. 2600 BUCKS! That’s a little crazy…but makes some sense because the market is so small that no tuner wants to touch it for a measly $500-$600.

I just weighed my 04 S4 Avant: 3975 lbs.

Ah, my bad. I knew the rods were different on the old 4.2 timing belt motors, and I assumed it wasn’t an aluminum motor block at the time as well.

so. . … anyone ever done a turbo swap on a RS6? If they can get into the 11’s on stock motor/turbo/etc, what can be done with just a turbo swap, or does engine internals probably need more addressing at that point. Just curious if anyone has done more than MT6/IC/Meth/Tune/Racegas/exhaust.

those weights are off beem. They’re Euro only weights for stripped cars (i.e. no leather, no power anything…in other words cars that don’t exist)

B5 S4 = 3690
B6 S4 = 3820
B7 S4 = 3850
B7 RS4 = 3920
B8 S4 = 4010

*(these are all manual transmission north american spec with full tank of gas and all liquids etc)

The RS6 weight looks right. You showed me that once before.

fuck no I would think the stock motor would be good for 500 whp at least. It’s a forced induction RS car after all.

tune + piggies + catback = maybe 400-425 whp. They’re good to go plenty more. Marc/10secondS4/BBB was hitting one of his RS6s with a good sized nitrous shot last I heard.

stock engine can handle quite a bit of power… check out mtm, they seem to be the premier rs6 tuner.
They have a turbo upgrade kit… I think they use hybrid rs6 turbos though.
I have played with an mtm stage 3 setup… made 530wtq @ 3400 rpms on pump @ 23 psi, never got to finish it :frowning:

yeah tb 4.2 rods are a toss up, either 2.7t esch powdered metal or old 32v forged rods
