What is this dashboard symbol?

OK… So this symbol has been popping up every so often on my dash. It pops up at random times and I can’t tell what is actually causing it. It isn’t in the owner’s manual and I can’t find anything on the internet. My car seems to be running fine but it’d be nice to figure out what the hell this means. I had to draw it from memory because it only pops up for a second and I’ve only seen it maybe 5 times total so getting a picture of it isn’t exactly easy. Thanks for the help.

Isn’t this the headlight leveling malfunction? This also happens to be illuminated on the dash, however, this one doesn’t disappear, ever.

Exactly, that’s it! Typical I would make the wrong gum drop shape filled in but I guess I was close enough. I use Photoshop CS6, I think I would be laughed at by my fellow web designers/developers if I still used Microsoft Paint. What does this mean? I also have the headlight leveling system symbol illuminated so it would be kind of weird if they have 2 different symbols for the same issue.

it IS the auto levelers.

I had no DRL’s on my car and i almost never drove at night (until winter came around and it gets dark early) So when my HID’s came on in november’ish all i did was turn on my full lights every time i drove the car, wether it be day or night.

It just went away.

This happened in fall 2010 and 2011.

That seems odd Audi would make 2 different symbols for the same malfunction and then make the one that isn’t in the owner’s manual pop up for a second and the other which is in the manual stay there all the time. The one in the picture of the dash has been there since I lowered my car which seems to be pretty common.

Its the light/rain sensor warning isn’t it?

The headlight leveler warning is the one with the arrow marks around it.

I don’t think I have a rain sensor. I know the auto light leveling symbol is the one with the arrows but this other one that’s not in the owner’s manual looks kinda similar leading me to believe it does have something to do with the auto leveling mechanism. The question I have is are there 2 different problems with my auto levelers or does this mysterious symbol mean something else?

Light sensor as in to turn on your headlights and to dim your dash lights when its dark out.

Maybe the cold is messing with it somehow and then once the windshield warms up it goes away? Just guessing here…

Oh nice, thanks Mistro! Apparently I didn’t search hard enough. I guess it’s gotta be the light sensor for the auto setting on the lights because I don’t have the rain sensors. Oddly the sensor is working because I never change the auto headlight setting and they come on every time. Thanks again.

That warning light is caused by the sensor for the auto darkening feature in the rear view mirror. Audi has a TSB that I found when that light came up on my first S4. In the TSB it says that the warning light would come on usually when the mirror sees very different light levels really quick like when you drive under a ramp. Unfortunately a new rear view mirror is expensive as hell! So I just ignored it when it would come up.

WHO the hell in germany should be held responsible for such a dumb symbol. Even knowing what it means, I still can’t look at the symbol and say “oh yeah that makes sense”

Nope, I haven’t done anything. The mirror seems to be dimming normally too. The last time the symbol popped up was when I was going over a bridge. Sounds like something I should just ignore.
