The site has 500 members. A few months ago it had 100. Its growing just fine, I think. The goal of the site is not to ‘grow’. It is to provide a forum for members first, and those members can determine the content without that content being censored or controlled to line the pockets of the site owner. If that means 500 people, that’s fine. It does not need to grow. Growth is required for financial sustainability of a website. This site does not need to financially sustain itself. At least that’s what I see the site as. Maybe if ‘God’ wrote a mission statement it would be more clear.
The car drama stems from people having opinions that are not muted by advertisers. Frankly I think that’s healthy. That kind of ‘drama’ is what saved me from buying a $10,000 supercharger kit from a company that was pulling a scam on audizine members back in 2008. A bunch of members called them out (car drama) and the majority of people started threads that sounded like this one, saying ‘why are you all such haters’ etc. Fact is, if everyone sat around and sang koombaya and said ‘everything is great! that dyno is great!’ and didn’t scrutinize anything or ask questions, that would create a labotomized user base, and is what the big sites are for. That is, in my opinion, FAR more damaging than watching a couple of people have an argument about something.
The personal drama is just what happens on internet sites in general. When there’s a thread with a title describing someone sucking on someone’s asshole, well, you should maybe just not open that one if you don’t like to see that kind of drama. I agree it’s not very useful for ‘advancing the platform’ but this isn’t a technical only site, so you’ll see that here and there. Don’t lose sight of the fact that there are hundreds of threads here, primarily performance or news focused…there are a very small number of ‘drama’ threads like the straw sucking one.
