What kind of Home TV/Home theater setup do you have?

I love playing with other people’s money!

maybe all that staring at a dim, grainy projection screen has hurt your eyesight. Read again…

[quote=sakimano]http://I bet you all a coke in 5-7 years these setups are gathering more dust than you could ever imagine today.

Note the use of future tense references.

Further, comparing the last 10 years to the next 5-7 years is useless because

a) you were even younger the last 10 years (now you’re getting nice and old)
b) TVs were tiny for the last 10 years, and now they are 60-70-80" inches and very attainable pricewise for the large format
c) TV quality for large screens was absolutely dogshit (basically they WERE projectors) 10 years ago

So hold on to your Coke thirst and be prepared to quench mine in 2020.

Anyone else bummed about plasma TVs being on the way out? I was lucky to snag a 50" Pioneer Kuro Elite plasma tv a few years ago, and to this day the picture is damn near flawless. I have a second 50" Panasonic plasma, which is also really good.

Unfortunately, Pioneer and Panasonic are no longer in the plasma business, and I believe Samsung and Vizio are exiting the market as well. Hopefully the OLED technology comes down in price, as I would not want to switch to LCD anytime soon.

Haha, yea I knew you were talking future vs past tense. And I do agree TV’s continue to get cheaper & better, just as all technology does.

I might loose the coke in 10 years, but lets hope the future is awesome and in 20 years you’ll be buyin me a case (diet coke please) b/c we have full wall projectors in every room and I won’t ever have to deal with painting another wall in the house again lol.

You are right though. Projectors definitely have some major drawbacks, but I don’t think they’ll disappear as time goes on, there are some pro’s to them as well. It’s all about what fits the room best and what your needs are. As odd as it may sound, I like it being a dedicated room that isn’t as “usable” as a living room, it means you’re dedicating you time to that movie or that show. Makes you kind of slow down and enjoy it rather than walking around the house and just having it on in the background.

Yes, absolutely bummed…I’ve always preferred plasma picture. However, life goes on and in a few years (or more) when I have to replace my plasma I’m sure I’ll find something decent.

^ I’ve still got a 42" Pioneer plasma from early 2000’s. Runs like a champ. Separate box (about 75 pounds heavy) from the TV itself (which weighs a metric ton). Great picture for a 1080i. Really the only problem I have is the DVI connection. No HDMI. Notaone…

Whatever… it is in the exercise room, and I only watch it when I… er… exercise.

It sounds like the one I still have as well. Uses the PDP-R03U media receiver? I’ve had it since 2000…I don’t use it that often but it still works great.

Got my Samsung plasma last year from Video Only. They only had a couple in the whole store and I was lucky to snag it for a good price including the wall mount. The blacks display much better IMO, and with the slim border it makes for an excellent picture.
My parents have a Sharp Aquos ‘Smart TV’ with the anti-glare screen and it always looks funny for the first 10-15min when I go to visit.

At work, we recently replaced our retractable projectors/screens with 80" Sharp LCDs and wireless screen sharing. Definitely gives me screen envy…

Well I still owe some pictures… I’m so damn impressed with this new Samsung Plasma it is way better than the previous Samsungs, Hitachi’s, and Panasonic’s I have owned/own… I’m most likely going to replace my older Panasonic while I can still get them… The colors, blacks, and lack of glare is just awesome… Not to mention the 3d being totally cool… Some of the “smart” features are not so good but I’m capable of pushing remote buttons and don’t need voice control and such… Watched Avatar in 3d the other night and wow, just wow…

I’ve noticed a few negatives in regards to Bose, can someone elaborate? I’m in no way a audiophile but I liked my previous Bose and am very happy with my current lifestyle… I’m sure better can be had for less money but curious on why they aren’t a good choice? Is it just the cost?

wow these plasmas are dirt cheap

60" 3D plasma from Samsung for $999? The non 3D is $899?

Wow.

My Sony 52" XBR5 is on it’s way out I think…something’s wrong with the picture for the first 5 minutes it’s on, and then it’s perfect after that. Picture is super dark and ghosty. Then perfect after 5 minutes.

First, congrats on the new setup - new gear is always fun!

Second, oh boy, don’t get the audiophiles started on Bose! Bose engenders tons of hate, except (it seems) from most of the people who own the stuff. Bose gear is perfectly suited to its market - it’s good enough for many people…even if it’s pricier than it should be in many cases. Clever design and simple installation are worth something, though…

I have a Bose home theatre. Super simple one…3-2-1 GemstoneX or something. Won it at a golf tournament and it’s fine for me. It sounds decent, it is plenty loud, it has plenty of bass, and looks good in my house. I’m not drilling into my walls for speakers etc. Life’s too short lol. I may not belong in this thread from that point of view.

No highs, no lows…must be Bose!

Bose has its place and markets it well. Grossly over priced IMO. Not that they don’t sound good (and are very clean looking), but I think you can build a lot better system for the money.

Saki, Yeah that is a good deal… It’s a slightly older model as they are on the 8500 series but still a nice tv especially at that cost…

ZCD, thanks! yeah, usually I bore or just become used to it after a few days but I’ve continued to be impressed… The picture is just that good…

Yeah, I’ve always liked Bose and granted I’m not playing music it is plenty loud and very clear with decent base… No doubt it’s overpriced but to your point I like the small speakers and easy setup… I have the wires ran through the walls as well so it’s a very clean look…

Oh, and since the original question was about the type of HT setups we have, here are a couple of (not so great) pics of ours.

Gear is a Denon receiver, Sony Blu-Ray, Bose Acoustimass surround-sound setup,a 73" Mitsubishi RP DLP and a Logitech Harmony remote to control it all.

Yeah, I know - it’s not exactly the latest and greatest, but it’s fine for us for now. Thinking of an 80" TV to replace the Mitsubishi, but it’s not really high on our priority list…

Saki, Yeah no doubt… The speaker setup was really easy… I ran all the wire down through the walls and through the small unfinished area of my basement ceiling back to the unit itself as I wanted the clean look… I did it with the old one and just reused the wires and put the new ones downstairs with the old setup… Took maybe an hour or two…

Quad, I’m sure there is better I guess I just didn’t want to piece something together and like Saki said it’s simple to install, looks good and I think sounds good… I’ll disagree with the no highs, no lows, etc. Maybe I’m just easily impressed but I think it rocks… No doubt very pricey though…

Oh yeah I totally understand the not wanting to piece it together. But like I said, that’s where their market lies. Easy to install, clean, and the ‘brand name’.

There is a lot more technical reasons why Bose gets a lot of hate, like the way their crossovers work and how they digitally alter the sound to make it more pleasant on the ears. Which isn’t bad for average Joe but you’re not getting the true sound which is what all the audiophiles beef about.

I don’t think they’re bad per se, but I would personally spend my money elsewhere.

I’m thinking maybe 1500-2000? I don’t mind going a few hundred over but I’d need to justify it to the wife

Don’t need too many HDMI inputs I think. I’m guessing 3 would be enough (PC, Set-top Box, Chromecast or some equivalent).

No real preference on wall mount or standing speakers. Skinnier would be nicer, or I guess I could offset the screen from the wall, put the speakers behind, and do some back lighting or something.

Are you near Toronto? I have a bunch of Focal/JM Labs inwall speakers for sale. The sound quality of these speakers is incredible.

In wall speakers do take extra work for install though. For me, it was well worth it to get all the speakers and wires out of the living room.

If you are close by, let me know and you can drop by for a demo.
