What's this sound?

Like a squeaking rattle. Tensioner?

im not nearly as informative as others on the site but is that the flapper sound people speak of?

Does it when it’s cold for the most part.

These speakers suck. I’ll check when. I can get on my better computer upstairs.

I’d replace the alternator belt, idler pulley/tensioner…then go from there.
It sounds like a bearing going bad, most likely the idler pulley.

I’d also upgrade to the 6 rib kit if you have the cash.

I over-torqued my belt tensioner the first time I did a belt change. It resulted in this sound shortly there after and my belt getting munged up pretty quickly (the little groove in the tensioner chewed into the belt really quickly).

What I think had happened was I’d overworked the bearing on the tensioner which then failed and that was the sound I was hearing. I replaced the entire setup with JHM auto-tensioner and have never heard the sound again (plus, no over torquing because auto-magic FTW!).

The RS4 is a little different than the S4 and basically has an automatic tensioner already.

So it could be a few things…

Generator (bearing)
Ribbed belt (worn)
Idler roller (bearing)
Vibration damper (or crank pulley, this is just a hunk of metal, so that is unlikely the issue)
Tensioning roller (bearing or it could be loosing tension due to age)

*most likely IMHO is the idler or tensioner

I actually just realized this, but the JHM 6 Rib kit actually deletes the Idler roller…one less thing to fail is always a plus!

That does sound like the roller on the tensioner.

I guess it was the belt itself. Changed it and sound is gone.

I also wire brushed the alternator pulley because it looked like it had some rubber residue from a previous belt on it.
