The narrow deep chamber X pipe like that is a good design for these cars. I had one that was made here local and it worked really well. Good price for that as well.
Thinking of changing from this:
To the previously mentioned X-pipe.
Does anybody have any info about power/sound delta’s?
what exhaust do you have? I’d change to a proper exahust before jamming another x-pipe into an existing exhaust. Unless you hate money.
I have the aforementioned Magnaflow 2.5 inch exhaust (which is why I said “Thinking of changing from…”). Catless. Behind JHM V1 JetHot coated and wrapped headers. Does that qualify as “a proper exahust?”
With the JHM headers you can stick with whatever X you really want. The headers act as a big vaccum the rest of the exhaust is important but a standard X will be fine. I like the shallow X due to it allowing more mix area.
Thanks for your reply. Any idea of how the Jegs product might change the power and/or the sound?
By the way, I plugged in my 2004 S4 Avant into Jegs’ site and found a surprising number of products there.
You didn’t post your exhaust. You posted the magnaflow x pipe which lots of guys weld into various exhaust setups. So do you have the full catback or just the x? Maybe now you understand the question.
I asked what you had in case you were cutting the x pipe into a 2.25" milltek or something. Your link to jegs x was for 2.25/2.5/3.0 for example so again unclear.
I’d stick with what you have if it’s a full magnaflow. You’re just modifying something that works pretty well. Time/money could be better spent elsewhere. What if jegs is crap quality and rots after a year? What if the welds you’ll need to do fail?
If you want a nicer x pipe, wait for a steal of a deal on a used fast intentions to pop up and sell your magnaflow. Otherwise stick with what you have kit it’s a full magnaflow catback) . It’s working well.
A deeper chambered X pipe so jegs style will lower the tone and give a deeper sound. This is good for crusing speeds as it tends to bring less drone from what I have seen. The other standard X is on the other side of the sound scale. It brings in a slightly higher pitch.
From what testing I have read and from what I have seen the deeper chamber is good for the down low hp and the standard X helps in the upper rpm. You already have headers so I dont know how much you really need the deeper chamber. I actually like having it with headers as it just seems to add even more Tq in the RPM where I tend to drive
Thanks again Justin. I’ve been looking for a way to get a deeper sound from my Avant. Too many highs right now and I really don’t want to use cats to try for that. I’ll have to check the measurements between the Magnaflow and the Jegs and consult with my exhaust guy to see what’s involved dollar wise.
Hopefully the issue has been resolved. I just ordered a FI catback, with resonators, from JHM.
