03 B6 S4 Avant

Hello everyone, i am from the UK and own an 03 B6 S4 Avant with a 126323 miles, i have been meaning to get on AR for a while due to oil consumption and JHM recommended to come here for technical advice.

I’ve owned the car for nearly a year and bought it off my Dad, there have been a few issues with it and i’ve been in touch with JHM about them and i asked when they would recommend the right time to get a built motor.

I did a compression test last year and got 8.5 bar on all cylinders, but when i was pulling the plugs out i found them to be highly carbon-ed up and the one in cylinder 8 looked as if it was dipped in treacle.

I have been doing oil and filter change every 3 to 4 thousand miles.

I got a scare last Friday when i was out meeting a few friends and started the car up and it made a huge clacking noise so i quickly turned the ignition off and restarted the engine with no sign of misfire or loss of power. I drove it home which was 18 miles away, i felt a slight misfire when i got within a quarter of a mile from my house and could hear a slight rattle from the engine when letting off the accelerator.

I really don’t want to get rid of this car and i’m planning on pulling the engine this month hopefully.

Thanks for reading.

You came to the right place. If you can post the actual compression numbers for each cylinder. That will be helpful.

Also I wouldn’t drive the car another foot. Call jhm get the intermediate timing chain kit. Jhm beats all the other companies prices and they make better the stock parts. I wouldn’t try to drive a year longer till you change the timing components.

I Didn’t write down the exact numbers for each cylinder sorry. I know it would be useful info but i didn’t really think at the time.

I’ve read alot on the Products JHM have and know one comes close for price and quality. I’ll also get my hands on a borescope just to check there hasn’t been any contact.

That would be very helpful but if your doing a bore scope that can be helpful as well. Get some good looks at the walls too.

Welcome and sorry to hear about your issues. As Justin said, that doesnt sound good at all and you probably shouldnt drive it again. Good luck and post updates when you do the boroscope.

Yes i shall have a look at the walls and thanks for your advice so far, i very much appreciate it.

Thank you, this will be the second week the car has been off the road and i already miss driving it. Yes i will post my findings.

Could anyone tell me the easiest way of posting photos, its just a bit new to me all this forum stuff.

i do it through photobucket, but thats because i used that from like 10 years ago. You do it through your computer saved images as well. When replying look for the picture icon above the smileys.

Right so when you click the picture icon do you the paste a link in between this

. Then to upload from the computer you do it through the attachment option?

Also on the upper right of the page on this site you will see upload icon. Click on that and just upload the picture to your Audirevolution account here. If you have issues just post questions about that in the questions section.

Well i made a start on pulling the motor and box out yesterday and today and so far i am up to phase 5 of the Joey Cuccaro DIY but done phase 6.

I Came stuck at the bottom right core frame bolt, which later got chiseled off this morning.

I have also had a look down a few of the cylinders with the borescope.

I cant rember exactly but i think this was cylinder 3 with to objects either side of the score mark.

This is cylinder 2 which looks to have oil residue on the cylinder wall.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/Nick_Moss-Abbott/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0021_zpswr3hk4b6.jpg

And this is cylinder 8.

It was hard to get a good look at the cylinder walls as the borescope was the most flexible.

Looks like normal ware. The wall looks like standard score marks. They didn’t look too deep and they didn’t look to ride the wall all the way.

The big look is at the tips of the pistons you just want to make sure there aren’t any valve hit marks.

Yeh the score marks aren’t so bad, its just the debris sitting against the walls and on top of cylinder 8.

If you hit it with a air hose would the debris move. It just looks like carbon or fallen dirt from getting access to the area.

Well A few Weeks Back i managed to get the motor and box out, which had to be dropped with the subframe due to me unable to get on of the axles off lol.

Now as you can see from the pic’s the motor is covered in oil and has been a messy job. Ive been stripping it down as of late, ready for when i take it to the specialist to do the timing and heads.

The flywheel is scrap, just glad its stayed together really.

Now if you can see it you will notice that the chain guide has moved and can be moved by hand. This is on bank two after the exhaust cam. Has anyone known this to happen?

Now its just getting the parts now and the list just keeps getting bigger haha.

sucks about the axles. get a few years in bad weather conditions and those things are very hard to get out. the oil didnt look too bad but its not good to see all that when its your car. lookin good so far. it will be interesting to see the damage when you pull the covers off

Yeh the oil seems to be coming from the rocker covers mainly and they’ve been resealed a number of times even with silicon but still leak, i guess they must be warped or something. Both crank seals seem to be leaking aswell and there was a huge puddle of oil on the valley pan.

The intake manifold was loose and has oily residue inside it and also the intake ports and valves have the same oily residue. Exhaust ports and valves have a lot of carbon build up.

take a good look at the PCV system. If the PCV system is clogged it will cause the leaks your seeing. Might be a good idea to order a new unit.

Timing Chain covers off.

The common chain guide that breaks.

Fair amount of slack on the left bank chain.

Mechanical Cam adjuster bolts how effin tight are they lol.

Hello everyone, well i removed both heads today.

Cylinders 6 and 8 seem to be the trouble makers, especially number 6. I hate seeing pic like that. IIRC slow4 had similar scoring on one of his cylinders and he’s still running that beast today. Hopefully he’ll chime in here.
