2002 a4 3.0 six speed jhm tune. Intermittent starting issues

Hello everyone, was told by jhm too post on here for some serious advice on my car. For 6 weeks now the car has been not running. It’s a 2002 3.0 6 SPd it has the jhm tune. So it all started with it randomly shutting off on me while I was driving. I immediately sent it too one shop and they did battery and crank shaft sensor. That didn’t work, got it back and the fans were running on the car while it was just sitting in my driveway. So again I had it towed to yet another vw and Audi shop, not a dealer. They fixed my fan relay and sever other relays going into the ecu bc they believed there was water damage in them, they also gave me a new ecu box bc that’s where water was coming in. I get the car back, thinking finally it’s fixed, nope i drive it for a good two days and once again it stalls out on me while driving… Then it fires up after a while. I get it home and contact jhm and I send them ecu. They send it back to me telling me one of the drivers in the ecu looked like it had water damage, so I get ecu back, put it in the car and it works for 2 days and boom it’s back to shutting off again randomly. Sometimes I wudnt even get a check engine light with key in on position, meaning no communication to the ecu. So again I have it towed to another guy that works on audi. So he figure out that the wire going to the check engine light to the ecu is all corroded possibly bc of water damage. So he cleans and fixes that. Car starts up but now he is saying the ecu may be faulty bc it looks like another driver is bad again. So he wants to order another ecu to fix the issue. But do you guys think the problem is ecu related? I have no idea what to do, can’t keep fixing it and have not be fixed. I’m probably leaving some stuff out but that’s basically my issues. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Should have posted on here initially, could have told you right off the bat it was water in the ecu box and saved you the time/money!!! Sounds like you need a new ECU. Check your local scrapyard for a new one

I was thinking a new ecu also but I spoke to jhm today and they don’t think it’s the ecu because they had it a week ago and they told me it was bad driver in the ecu and they fixed it. I can get an ecu… But isn’t it hard to put another ecu in the car. Jhm told me it is not that easy to do.

the only hard thing with putting a new ecu in is getting around the imobiliser/security thing-a-mo-bob which needs to be reprogramed or coded. It is not like the B5 guys that can just swap in a different ecu

Yeah that’s why idk if I want an ecu. I am thinking there are more shorts going to the ecu. The mechanic found one going to the ecu that controls the check engine light. And it’s running ok but he says one of the drivers in the ecu is still not right. I can post pictures of the damage tomoro morning.

Any cracked/dammaged lines going to Your coilpacks?

Water dammage to Your battery terminal wires?

The coil packs all look good, I even had a new battery installed, and the terminals are fine. There was no water affecting that. Mostly on the right side where my ecu sits of course. So the car did idle today for 30 min without shutting off. So idk whether to pick it up from the mechanic and give it a try or try something else. He says one of drivers in the ecu is not right.

this is a picture of inside my ecu. The driver in the ecu that is closest to the bottom of the picture is getting extremely hot while the car is running, the other drivers on the board are not close to being that hot, so do u think a new ecu is my option, he says he can clone the ecu for me. the mechanic says the driver is most likley causing the car stall on me while driving.

I’ll pm a few of the techs we have on the site. From my understanding the ECU gets very hot due to several but not all drivers getting hot. While I’m far from the expert I would say its your mechanic that isn’t fully aware of how the ECU works

Fuel pump relay is right in the same area as the ECU. That could cause issues like that if it also got wet

Yes god if you could pm some of the Techs that would be great. Thanks. And b6joes4 I will ask the mechanic tomoro too look into the fuel pump relay. Thanks guys

Isn’t good to have God on your side ;D

Sorry it took me a few days to respond, I was researching a few things. I also sent a PM to one of the other Audi technical guys to get his input. So you should see that response as well.

The big first thing to mention is that your ECU runs VERY hot regardless.

There are several relays and drivers in the ECU that become active at different points. Joe was right you have the ECU relay for the fuel system in that same area.

If you have a ECU that has seen water your going to have bugs from time to time until the ECU is dry. Clearly from your picture its dry so, I don’t see that being an issue.

As far as the JHM chip. Did you just get this or has this been something that has been in the car for a while and then this happened?

I have had the jhm chip for about a year now. I sent my ecu to jhm a couple a weeks ago and my car ran for a couple of days and then started doing the sane thing as before. It will run and then shut off. Right now I am in the process of getting another ecu.

Update in the car… Got myself a new ecu for the car… Sent it too jhm to get it cloned to my other ecu. Car is now running very well. It has been for a week now. Crossing my fingers now that it keeps running strong.

Funny. My car started doing the same thing this week. Tuned ECU an tcu, aka automatic.
Have my stock ECU so maybe I’ll switch it out if I feel like it. Haven’t drive the car in a week, been riding my bike since. Honestly love it.
Just sucks when it rains.

Yeah that’s really wierd that yours started doing the same thing. The reason for my other ecu probably burning out was most Likley water damage. But I would be interested to see if your ecu is also having the same problem that mine did. One of my driver chips was running extremely hit, after I got another ecu, not running so hot and all is good so far. Give me an update to see if your stock ecu works, but can u switch from stock to jhm tune. My new ecu has the jhm tune as well.

Yeah I have my original ECU for my car that is stock. It’s gonna suck to go back but I’ll give it a shot in the next few days. Just gotta get around to doing it. Just got done painting my wheels too. Time for the to completely cure I guess. Haha

After layin in bed and pondering this a little bit more, I feel like the same deal with the ECU running hot or too hot might be the issue.
When I start the car up in the am, drives to work fine. Sits at work for
9-10 hours, starts up fine, drives home. No issue.
Once I get home and head to get something to eat, car begins to stall and shut off. My point, the car runs great when cold, when it heats up, it starts to faulter.
Sounds like that could be my issue and it has def intrigued me to get the ball rolling. Tomorrow I’m taking it out for sure and popping the “old” stock one in. This is gonna suck! Lol

My moneys on water. It’s really easy to get a crack in the ECU box when you take it out, due to how much of a PITA it is to get ours out. I experienced the same problems due to water leakage. Since fixing it though it’s been fine… and I’ve had the JHM tune for over a year now.
