3.0 Dp development

Man this is odd. Is there any chance that only a few guys have actually checked. I can’t see them just having one cat.

Was it me or did the labree aftermarket Dp’s still have the precat?

Yeah just 1 massive cat. About 1.5 times the size of a S4 pre-cat

Thanks joe. I also am quite sure this is the case. The Pre Cat on the 3.0 is massive. Its great for flow for a little while. Once it gets hot tho, Its hot for a long time and it really starts to kill the power from the motor

Here is some pics of one of my Dp’s

I am not sure what the size difference my Cat after the manifold is compared to the US one. Anyone able to comment on that.

^wow very interesting, they look quite a bit like the B6 S4 pipes. The precat looks smaller

Great pictures lout.

That is vintage B6 S4 Dp style.

These 3.0’s are slowly relieving there secrets.

So your car had these DP’s and the others have just a Big pre cat?

lets get some more information if we can.

what year? and your a automatic? Can you check your motor code for me and lets make sure there isn’t something different there?

My car is a 2002 model (built August 2001), engine code is AVK and has a 5spd Titptronic gearbox

Man, that is so odd. I kinda wish the other 3.0’s had DP’s like these, that way we could just gut the pre-cat’s instead of having to get a new set of DP’s.

Anybody think that LoutJnr’s car has DP’s like that since his is a very early B6? That’s the only reason I can think of. I highly doubt all other RoW B6 3.0 have DP’s like that and that US 3.0’s were the only ones that got just one big cat.

^What’s the chance of calling some salvage places and finding a set of those for dirt cheap to start playing around with?

Are “part out cars” big in the A4 world like the S4 world?

That is really interesting that they made such a big swing in design mid platform for a part like this. I wonder if it was cheaper to do the one main cat where the PreCat sits rather then the pre and main cat like the S4 since the A4 wasn’t as performance oriented.

Well thanks a lot for the pics Lout, I have a feeling most of us would of kept saying “nu huh, you’re wrong” had we not seen pictures for ourselves haha.

That’s a good idea. If we could get these and just piggie them it would probably be a very cost-effective solution. I’ll check my local salvage yard. 3.0 a4 and a6’s aren’t too hard to find.

Sniper Meistah

can you guys post your motor code. Maybe he has a different motor code.

I would really like to get to the bottom of this issue on what cars have what DP’s.

It really sounds like there are lots of little changes per year and I think we would be good to have that nailed down.

Mine is AVK as well. I’m also 99% sure the engines themselves are the same code for all a4s and a6s that use the 3.0. I was looking into potential motor replacement costs awhile ago and that’s what I found.

It will definitely be interesting what engine related changes happened to our cars throughout the platforms life.

Oh and I just creeped b6joe’s profile on AZ, he had a 2002 b6a4 3.0 as well, with the large single cat… I’ll have to check mine myself to see if mine is like that as well.

I’ve also got the AVK engine, with the 01E trans…which speaking of if anyone wants a 6-speed swap, here’s a part out car in Milwaukee with one: http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/pts/2401831440.html)

I still think that the reason that LoutJnr has different DP’s is because his was one of the first B6’s made back on '01. They made a lot of changes pre 2003 and late '01 was just the start of the B6’s and I think they could have just taken other parts they currently had on the shelf before taking the time to design new ones.

Great find on Craigslist. that should be helpfull to alot of the guys. good prices to.

I think your right audi tends to have lost of the shelf parts used for change over in platforms. So it seems this Dp issue is one of them. We might be smart to start a official year to year change thread. Some of this stuff should be sorted out.

I know there’s been some discussion about this but we just checked motorsport916’s stock exhaust setup and he only has one big cat, not two:

This is a picture of the bottom of the downpipe and the flex joint. It’s hard to get a good picture of it, but there’s only one really big cat on these pipes located up near the head/manifold. He’s got a 2002 Tip, quattro by the way.

Keaton thanks for the update. What are your thoughs on making dp’s.

Did you ever hear back on the jig? It would be interesting to see what we could do with it!

A new one is getting made as we speak. The concept is to make one jig that will make a set of Dp’s that will fit both the automatic and manual cars. The idea is to keep the price below 600$ how far below depends on the bends, the flex links, flanges and 02 bungs.

This is great news!!! 8)
