3G+ MMI - Tethering Data from a mobile and WAP activation

I just switched to a shared family data plan, it opened up personal hotspot for free and I was able to save $100 per month.

Used to pay $330 per month for five phones, two unlimited and three 3mb. Our average usage was 10gb per month so I doubled it at 20gb to create headroom.

Ordered the hardware to do this, now just waiting for it to arrive. I’m mostly just interested in updating the cache on google maps.

With two Audi’s that have MMI 3G+ there is no way I am giving T-mobile $$ for slow data.

Just a question regarding the WiFi tethering approach and using the “Audi Music Stream” app:

Is there a way to get it to work when the device with the app installed is being used as the WiFi hotspot?
I ask because in my experience, you cannot use your device’s WiFi client when the Hotspot function is enabled.
This is a problem since the AMS app requires a WiFi connection to the the MMI’s Hotspot.

I’ve personally been running the Wi-Fi tethering setup described in this thread for a few weeks now (thank you!), but still have not yet been able to use AMS since my phone’s WiFi is tied up providing the data connection to the TP-Link.

Thank you, you post is great , I will try this on my Q7 mmi 3g and tell you about the instalation.

Hello
I have a problem trying to edit the root.sh, in what folder is it ?
-edit the root.sh script and change the 123.123.123.123 to the IP of your TP-LINK LAN interface .
I have DB, utilis,screens,copie_scr.sh and run.sh… Which one to edit? Thank you

it should be run.sh, not root.sh…I’m not sure where I had root.sh in my head  I’ll edit the original DIY, but currently I seem to have lost the edit priviliege.

I had linked to the wrong script. URL fixed. New link should point to DNS.zip

-unpack to the root of a blank SD card formatted FAT
-edit the run.sh script and change 123.123.123.123 to the IP of your TP-LINK LAN interface (make sure your editor doesn’t add in any strange characters during the editing procedure)
-plug it into the MMI 3G and follow instructions
-reset the MMI

i have tried the above but some how i do not get and instruction on the MMI .
any suggestion
software on my system HN+R_EU_AU_P0532

Hi,

I have connected a 4G router to my dlink ethernet adapter and made all the changes in the green menu.

I can now see the google maps, which is great!

However, when I try and use the Online Search in the sat nav it comes up with a message telling me to connect my phone to the car kit or insert a sim. It gives me the option to modify my bluetooth settings or to cancel.

The same message comes up if a phone connects to the car’s hotspot.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

First off I would like to thank you for a great find.
I implemented everything and for some time it worked as a charm. Now, I got vag-com cable and did some vag tweaks to the car (like windows up/down with key fob and some more). lately I noticed that when I enter destination in the nav, after it’s been calculated MMI hangs when Google earth is enabled only and I have to hard reboot it, as it gets unresponsive. If goole is turned off - it all works just fine. I don’t know if it has to do to vag.com tweaks, or something else…
still getting google map data on the navigation screen no problem. Could you please advice where to look and is it worth to take the car to the dealer with this problem?
I’m driving 2014 s4 by the way.

Thank you very much in advance.

I was wondering if you found a fix for this issue? I just did the conversion to 3G+ in my US-spec 2012 S4 and like you- everything works well except for GE, which just lags the whole MMI. If I disable it- everything works great.

Is there also a way to reverse these setting after the mod. I assume it would involve a new script or do you just reset the MMI without the SD card in place?

Hi All,

Attempting to run the sd scripts on an “A3 8V 2014” model and it fails to run. I have the sat nav 7inch mmi package on the car.

I see “Update medium” on the mmi console for the sd card but nothing else happens. Any tips to get the scripts to run so the dns can be updated and the green screen activated?

Thank-you

Would this work on MMI 3G? Not the plus model.

Went into the green menu and enabled the WLAN; I can now connect my iPhone to the car’s build in WLAN…

Cheers,
Shaun

Hi all. Just got a 2015 Q7 and was wondering if there was any new updates or shortcuts. Would love to get wifi from the phone to the car and the original post of almost a year old. Thanks.

I noticed that you wrote “MMI 3G”. Will your solution work with 3G, or only 3G Plus? I have a 2012 (early, pre-facelift) Audi S5 Cabrio that I received here in Canada, in August 2011. It is MMI 3G I believe.

Thank you!

Hi Shaun,

Nobody answered you here. Did you ever get the answer to this question? I have the same one.

Please let me know.

Thank you,
David

Im using 4G usb modem connected to the tplink instead of WISP, and it works with my phones and computer but not the car?
Could that be the problem?
i connected the Dlink rj45 usb converter to the computer and it works there…
but one thing is different.
when i connect it to the car, one led light on the dlink shows orange and the other green.
but on the computer both starts to shine green.

it seems like the config file is wrong. ive had some problems installing it…

as far as i know ive put everything on the root of a memory card, changed the config file ip number to 192.168.0.1 as the router has it. saved it then connected it to the car, shouldnt the script start by it self?
beacuse it does not to that on me…

even when i go to MMI Setup then software update and chose the SD1 or 2 where i connect it, it gives me an error saying that the sd card is not avaliable or something.
could someone send me another rar file with everyhting in it, with the ip number 192.168.0.1?
maybe somehting went wrong when i edited the file.

I have the latest Europe version firmware and 2015-2016 maps

Hello,

I read that after update K770 there is possibiltiy to use data from SIM card or via bluetooth in rsap mode (there is an android application that give support for rsap, but i think you can not connect with iphone).

I have audi a7 without sim slot and I enebeled NAD option and NAD operation in green menu (I am curretly on K783). Now I have possblity in my bluetooth setting to connect to handsfree, audio player and car phone (this is rsap funciton). But my phone does not want to connect with car phone, other functions are working without problem.

My question is if I need to do some aditional coding with vcds or enable some other funciton in green menu or my car simply miss some hardware?

If I could connect to my phone via car phone option, then I would be able to use online services directly via my phone and I would not need an extra router and this workaround.

And another tweak that I found over internet and have not been posted here:
This is how you can enable online traffic (I do not know if this will work, because you need to activate this via MMI info>Setting menu and I read that you get 1 year free subscription, but I did not try this yet only activate menu (I did not eneble data transfer yet)).

[Select]
[5F - Information Electr.]
[Adaptation - 10]
Select Channel 69 and Read
change the value from 8 to 32768 then Test then Save
Reboot the MMI (Press MENU, central MMI knob and top right softkey)

Then when you go into the list of sources in INFO>SETTINGS, you will now have the additional items of “Online Traffic Data” and “Online Traffic Data License”.

I have successfully tethered my iPhone to a TP-Link router and TrendNet adapter via the USB AUX cable.

Issue –
Google Earth will not load. The “Goo” in Google will turn white, but “gle” remains greyed out. Google Earth is also greyed out in the Nav menu although I can select it.

I have let the car sit in an area that I know has coverage and the map would previously load using the SIM card for 20-30 minutes and it only loads the “Goo”. If I go into googleearth in the green menu and choose Start Service, I get a message that’s it’s already started, but when I back out to the Nav, Google Earth is no longer greyed out and the logo loads fully, but it sits at the “Please wait…” screen and never presents the map. I can hit the back button and it will display “Google earth is loading data do you want to view the standard map?” I can also choose Restart Service with the same results. I have tried clearing the cache, deactivating and reactivating the service, but to no avail. Once I restart the MMI after tinkering in the green menu, it only loads “Goo” and is greyed out in the Nav menu.

All of the following services are working as they should:
Audi Connect – able to pull weather and news
Traffic – TMC is active
Google Search – able to lookup online destinations and related details
Wi-Fi Hotspot – able to connect to the car hotspot and surf the web
iPhone MMI Connect App – able to play internet radio stations and load music library

I am so close here. Is there a way via VCDS to reinitiate Google Earth or am I missing something in my setup above? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am super frustrated since everything else is working so well. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.
