5.2 V10 tapping on cold start?

Hello, this engine is actually in a 2008 S8 I am looking at purchasing, but s6 forum has so much more traffic.
The car is at Caliber Auto in Etobicoke ontario-if anyone is familiar with it. I have made appointments to take the car to eurocharged for a PPI and VCDS scan as well. if all goes well I will be having it shipped to my home in michigan.
Saw it in person, looks good and clean, slight curb damage to bottom of the front bumper and the side skirt looks to have been damaged due to impoper jacking. Can’t see either of these things unless under the car.

Main issue is the sound it makes when starting. About 2 seconds after it starts the loud c;latter begins. Louder than normal DI ticking. any ideas? Also take a listen to the exhaust clip video. Seems there is a “misfire” or a cycling of something every 4 seconds. Do the exhaust flaps cycle on startup with these cars?

Thank you in advance.

Greg the good news is your on the right forum for V10 help. A lot of the S8 guys post in the S6 section so that isnt a big deal.

On the car. The clatter on start up sounds like the flap on the intake is broken thats typical on these cars both S8 and S6 they all seem to have broken intake manifolds. If you look on here you will see a lot of information on it. check out countvohns performance thread he has a good section on it.

The good news is that you would have to do a carbon clean after getting the car as most V10 owners that had these cars didnt even know that was a thing. To do a carbon clean you need to take the intake off. The bad news is a new intake is around 2000 dollars. JHM is selling them for around 1700 so thats a big help but its still a big investment right after getting the car.

The exhaust sound is the SAI system. It causes the cars to run like crap on start up. Add in the broken intake flap and that just makes the start up missfire situation worse. The maintenance on these cars isnt too bad if you span it out over several years but if your just getting a car that most of the maintenance hasnt been done properly on and most of the time it hasnt your going to be spending the money all at once. When you have 10 cylinders the cost adds up for almost everything.

Getting a vag com VCDS reading and scan will be very important to tell some of the story. I have never heard of eurocharged so thats good and bad. I would look into twins automotive. I think they are close to ontairo and they know there stuff. They see quite a few V10 cars from what I have been told and they are good guys. They are on this forum as well.

Last question. The S8 has active exhaust flaps so they do move not too sure if its on start up or not.

If you can get the manifold Y pipe off, you can get a scope in there and check out the inside of the manifold.

Speaking of broken IMs, is there a JHM upgraded IM coming anytime soon? Or should I just give in and just roll the dice again on an OEM replacement? Currently running without the internal flapper mechanism - it was fine for 4-5 months but now I have a cold start misfire problem I’m tracking down.

Plus 1000 :+1:t3:

thanks Justin, I wasn;t expecting it to be the intake flapper, but if it is I will absolutely use that to my advantage to negotiate the price lower. I just hope the shop can get a bore-scope in there to take a look and take a picture so I have proof when it comes time to deal with the owner of the vehicle. Eurocharged is a very reputable and well known shop for high end and exotic performance in north york toronto.
the vehicle looks to have had the hood repainted, and the tires need to be replaced. These were items I would have already used to negotiate it down, but with a broken IM and to do a carbon cleaning, thats a shop bill of $3k (I will do it myself, but great to have a quote from a shop of the charges). We will see what is discovered. None of these items are deal breakers for me, assuming the sale price reflects these things. My goal before this flapper idea was to get it for 27k CAD, due to it not having some options I want, and it needing tires and the different shade of silver on the hood is something I simply cannot get over, I would have it repainted, or wrap the whole car gloss white. 27k CAD works out to be a good value in USD for me.
I am also expecting bushings needing to be replaced. Just all depends what it needs and how low I can negotiate the price down.

Make sure you get all the codes and post them here. Codes are a big part of helping us find out exactly whats going on.

Getting a camera into the intake might be a difficult task. most people just take them apart. That might not exactly be something you can have done but it would be worth it considering the price of a new intake.

thanks, yes I will post the codes here as soon as I get them after the inspection. Ill see if they are willing to pull the rear plenum off post throttle body so we can get the bore scope in there. See if anythign can be seen. Definitely need to factor that price in if it is in fact broken…and am expecting it to break eventually anyhow…
The new intake manifolds available from audi or JHM, do they have revised flaps? I know you can buy billet pieces for the linkage but the main problem is the flaps coming off the shaft internally yes?
Wish audi didn’t cheap out on this and used a metal 1 piece shaft…which IMO could still be a viable upgrade?

PS this is the car in question. I saw it in person and it really was in immaculate condition, smelled like new leather, paint was very good condition, interior flawless. Minus those small scratches under the bumper i mentioned earlier and different shape front hood.

Looks like a nice car.

JHM has what looks like the best prices for OEM replacement updated intake manifolds. But its a genuine intake. There was a revision that came out that apparently dealt with the weak linkage issue. That would be the intakes that are available now

Thats good to know there was a revised part, would love to replace that first thing before driving the car…carbon clean new intake manifold and have a bunch of trouble free motoring miles  just over a month peft till we can get it inspected and hopefully purchase it for a good price!

These are great cars. They just need to have the maintentance done. It might cost a bit but you get a lot out of it.

I have been thinking about the tapping noise…Really don’t think its broken flaps…sounds too metallic, whereas the flaps are plastic…
ANy other possibilities?

Hard plastic scraping on a metallic serface. I listened again and it didnt sound metallic to me. generally metallic that is going to be a higher pitch this was more mid range low density. Still we are going off a video of someone standing above and away not sweeping in on the motor. A motor scope would quickly help track down the location. Have them see if the sound is comming from the intake or the valve covers. If its coming from the intake then ok more then likely its the flaps or something broken in the intake. If the sound is coming from under the valve covers that would be a more likely a bad thing.

I found this noise on youtube. sounds very similar to the one i posted:
https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DXOc_PHblvZQ&h=sAQGStoW_

that would be good if thats all it is-worst case broken flaps. then I can do the intake spacer as well.

also checking out this S8 this saturday. 30k is way way way too much, no one is moving them for more than 25k.
Dealer says its from cali, has new brakes and bushings. But still, no way. And I dont like the grey exterior.
Other than the exterior color, it is exactly the same as the toronto one. But I like the toronto one’s darker wheels.
Need to drive at least 2 of these so if one feels off I have some kind of reference. Im looking at a total USD cost of the toronto one around 21-22k to my door. this includes shipping inspection and import tax. So regardless that’s what I am working with, with this other overpriced one. Dealer has had it for well over a year already.

The one with the knocking or clicking noise might just be best to pass on unless your getting a really good deal and there are no codes on the car.

So I actually bought the silver one with the tapping. I have a deposit on it, checking it out again next week. Putting it up on the hoist, i can poke and prod it all i want, listen with stethoscope, take it out for a good thrashing, and borrowing a friends ross tech cable to do a scan on it. If i dont like anything deposit is refunded. Current price set at 27k CAD which is 21.2k USD, so significantly cheaper than any other 08 s8 wit this kind of mileage (71k).
If i discover something obviously wrong in the readout or say the control arms are shot I will try to renegotiate. He claims the car drives perfectly and is plenty powerful. Brakes are fresh etc. I will ask him to provide me the report for evertything that was done to it under his care as well. 27k CAD is exactly the number I was hoping for (well, always want lower but that is fair IMO). so well see how she goes. Now that I have a solid 1-2 hours to really inspect it the way I want to, I will feel confident about this purchase if all is well, and if not-can see beforehand.

Something to consider when your looking at the car.

When you plug iin with the vag com make sure all the readiness tests have run. If you plug into the car and the readiness tests havent ran that means someone recently cleared the codes on the car and that would be a good case to show someone is hiding something.

Again the codes the car has stored will tell you just as much if not more then you just looking the car over.

I agree with you on the price for a 08 S8 with that mileage. I hope your review doesn’t reveal any deal breakers. Good Luck!

thanks guys, I will definitly check the readiness of all the system when I scan it. Need to do some youtube learning how to access and understand everything. Will do a scan when i first get there, after driving, and another key cycle as I understand usually need 2 cycles for some faults to show up.
Drove the s8 in michigan, body was rough IMO, sings and scuffs everywhere, drove good though, too much $$ though adn wrong color :stuck_out_tongue: and cracks in the leather seats! no one conditions their seats!! thanskfully the toronto one is super soft and plushy…always well cared for it seems.
Very excited for the silver on gunmetal wheel one. Next time I will report back will probably be with the ownership in my hand

if the readiness isnt all ran thats a super bad sign.

Codes dont pop up by key cycles. Somethings will pop up right away others will take a long time. Emmisions testing and things like that might turn up after a few key cycles but the run time needs to be long enough for the tests to run
