Aftermarket Clutch?

If you have one or had one can you share your feedback on them? Looking to replace my stock clutch but retain my stock flywheel which will be resurfaced if need be. I called JHM and EC and they both tried hard to sell me on the flywheel which isn’t surprising.

I just want something that will hold up to stage 2 numbers on race and the street. I don’t foresee myself adding any more power to this car (not there is any other options) so I don’t need a 6 puck or full on race setup.

I am very happy with the JHM stage IV clutch/flywheel

Thanks.

No chatter or ill effects? I think my biggest concern is chatter and I really want something as close to stock as possible that can withstand the abuse. Whether that exists I don’t know.

None, and it is better than stock! Pressure plate is as smooth as butter

Do you have a machine shop that can properly resurface a dual mass flywheel? If not you’ll experience chatter if you reuse your flywheel regardless whichever brand you choose.

Yeah my local shop has a machine shop that will resurface a dual mass flywheel. So in theory if I go with an aftermarket clutch and resurface my fw I should expect little to no chatter?

Interesting enough the cost of a clutch + install + resurfacing my fw is roughly the same ballpark price as a clutch + new flywheel + install.

Sorry when I said new flywheel I meant new lightweight flywheel and not OEM.

do you happen to know what they charge for a dual mass resurface?

$175-225.

Any insight regarding chatter and a resurfaced fw?

It’s not only the surface you have to worry about. Like any spring, the springs in a dual mass flywheel will wear and cause more flywheel “play” during engagement…making your clutch feel very sloppy.

I would personally never bother resurfacing one, I’d either buy a new one when upgrading the clutch disk and PP or convert to a SMF. The chatter that everyone speaks of usually goes completely unnoticed.

Its a tough pill to swallow when I start looking at aftermarket solutions. Even if I went with an OEM FW and an upgraded clutch the price is still relatively similar. OEM FW can be had for roughly $950 through ECS. And I have read that resurfacing is an option and was suprised when my local shop said they had a place that would do it.

The only two companies I have found that offer kits are Eurocode and JHM. Both offer LWFW+clutch with EC (1600) being roughly $800 cheaper than JHM (2400). Install would be $650 so EC would put me back around $2300 where JHM would be north of $3000.

To me that is crazy just to upgrade my OEM clutch.

I know some machine shops claim that they can resurface. If there is any high spots or just not resurfaced correctly you will get some type of chatter.

You have to pay to play man, not much more to say than that. At the end of the day these are Mustangs or Camaros that have a hundred companies in the market and they can all take risks based on volume. Even if their product is shit they will probably sell thousands of not tens of thousands of units before the customers realize it.

You either do it right or do it twice.

I’d be nervous with EC, they put zero proof behind their products IMHO. $2400 to upgrade a whole clutch kit is not that ridiclous considering the make and model of the car (production numbers). On top of that not many companies have even spent time or money making a better clutch kit, which is obviously a weak point on the B8S4…it’s kind of weird, but the B6/7 S4 RS4 crowd knows just how that feels.

Word. I understand all of that and having owned 2 6MT S4 avants (B6 and B7) I know all about them. Besides there was never an option to increase the output of the previous gen S4’s to what the B8’s are seeing so replacing the clutch wasn’t something anyone even considered AFAIK.

Some dude on audizine just got EC’s LWFW + Stage III clutch installed so hopefully he can provide some real world feedback which is seriously lacking in this regard.

Be careful that it isn’t a “paid for” review. EC often offers people killer deals for false reviews. Look at the header games with dynos that they played.

I’ll take it with a grain of salt.

It’s adbender. He’s a normal forum member who was on the EuroCode group buy for the clutch/flywheel just like I was. We actually did a lot of chatting via PM before we both pulled the trigger on the stage 3. I doubt he’s in EuroCode’s pocket as the were trying to talk him into the stage 4 and told him he’d hate the engagement of a ceramic disc on a daily driven car.

I’ll be installing my EC clutch/flywheel in the spring and I’ll give a full review at that time. I will say the flywheel is a work of art.

^^ be sure to post that review right here on AR!

Will do! My post above should say “I told him he’d hate the engagement of a ceramic disc”.

You’re talking about the economics of it, so why don’t we.

You’re trying to avoid the cost of a new flywheel. Saving what… $1000?

Knowing that nobody reuses or resurfaces the flywheel on these cars, there’s a reason. It doesn’t work that well. Imagine changing your clutch, resurfacing your flywheel and spending on the labour… Then doing it again 5 months from now because the flywheel is knackered? There goes your savings. Not to mention the pain in the ass of having no car for a week or so while you wait for parts and work to be done.

It’s a $60,000 car. I don’t care if it’s worth $32,000 today because it’s a few years old and has some miles. It’s still going to cost like a $60,000 car to fix stuff. It’s also a small market so there aren’t many options.

Finding the cheap way to do it has cost people more on these cars more times than I can count.
