All new 3.0 members

Welcome…

Don’t let the 1.8T guys take the wind out of your sail. The same thing was said about the B6 S4 when they tryed to do something. The 2.7t guys would step in and talk out there A$$. Now its the 2.7t guys who are eating a little crow. While you can’t blame the 1.8 and 2.7 guys for having a laugh at the expense of the 3.0 power ideas. The entire idea is for us to work together to give us a little excitement power and performance all at the same time. Maybe in that we can get a little respect from the rest of the guys

So a few questions. Are there any 3.0 guys with vag com? do any of you guys know how to use a vag com.

please chime in and let me know. Its not an issue if you don’t know how to use it. having members say something will just let me know, I need to make a video walking everyone threw it and then looking to help give everyone a cheap option as far as getting one.

Even if you don’t want to power up your car having a vag-com is a great tool to have at your disposal

I was sent over here after seeing posts about this location on AZ

I’ve got a 6-speed 3.0 Avant that I bought awhile back to replace my B6 S4.
I spoke with Keaton a little bit about getting the ball rolling for us 3.0 owners since I thought that there should be a much bigger market for parts since the 3.0 is (more/less) just a smaller/downgraded 4.2.

I’ve got Vag-Com (cheap ebay knockoff) and am willing to help out anyway I can
I’d love to send my ECU out to CA right now to get things going, but my Avant is my DD and I can’t really have my car down for awhile to send out my ECU

Awesome, I think you’re the first person to step up with one!

glad to have you here, do you need any help getting logs? I have a walkthrough I can send you that will get you a nice baseline log for the JHM guys to look at.

Beemercer would having a log from him be as good as me sending in the ECU? I’d like to avoid having to get a 2nd ECU if I can

I’m pretty sure JHM getting an ECU is pretty crucial to be able to get started on work (although I’m by far not the one to be saying one way or the other…)

Beem, I sent you an email just a min ago. Send me that walkthrough so I know what the hell I’m doing in Vag-Com.
Now I just have to get VCDS loaded on a computer again…and get Parallels or something so I can run windows on my Mac since I used to just run it on an old shitty PC laptop but it was deleted when trying to clear out a bunch of viruses.

What were looking for is a snap shot of whats going in in each Configuration. Logs give a real time look at how the system is going to react. Its not a large piece of the total work but its a needed piece. Most of the work comes from reading the ecu and laying out a map of what the factory set the systems to. That can take weeks or months.

Most “tunes” are nothing more then 5 things.
higher rev limmit
higher speed limmit
over extended pedal
1 of the 20 timing maps
1 of the 5 fuel maps.

While “they” change 5 things the JHM tune changes 105 things. Even back in the eairly stages of the JHM tune there were 60 or so changes. This is where the difference is…

With out a ECU logs are for nothing without the ECU and a good understanding of whats programed in it stock. Its a long line of work to get a proper tune.

Great to see this is rolling. I have already made a 3.0 tune and the customer was over joyed and completly suprised. I wanted to use that ECU for the construction of the rest of the 3.0 program. Turns out I can’t due to the fact his 3.0 ECU was updated in 08. The factory updates create a new set of issues.

Ooooh, interesting. Was this tune done recently after the discussion of the 3.0 program, or an older one? And can you elaborate on the results from it?

anyone who’s interested in the log walkthrough, PM me and I’ll get it out to you.

BC, glad to have you over here (it’s mbgt72 btw), if you need any help with the logs feel free to hit me up, I’m also pretty used to using them. The biggest thing is finding a good smooth level road and to only log at that one spot. I’ve also got a full rosstech cable if you ever need to do more then your ebay cable will let you do fyi.

CountVouhn, thanks for the info. I think it’s really a great misconception most tuners have given their customers. Anyone who thinks the tunes by other companies on the N/A Audi’s do more then that are sorely mistaken. It really is about area under the curve and how the car responds & uses the power available.

hello,
mistah told me about this forum. I’m excited to see what happens with 3.0 tech.

It would be nice to see some engine improvement mods and upgrades - not just performance boost, but just improving the reliability, common problems, etc. (little tricks and tips)

I have a 3.0 QTip Avant and the biggest improvement I see would come from being able to change the TIP program
It is designed for max comfort in D, which is great, but that also means a lot of slip changing gears. More wear, robs hp. I notice it holds downshifts too, kind of unique.

Maybe a slightly more aggressive shift and a more aggressive S mode… or the ability to change it on the fly?
Autos can’t be mind readers but maybe “tightening up” the autoshift and S modes would get the most out of the 3.0

A lot to ask, as I don’t know anyone working programming for the Tip but maybe you guys do.

FWIW,
I think the 3.0 is a great motor for the A4. Wonderfully smooth and for an auto, not bad at all

Hey glad you joined up! As for the TIP improvement that’s something I’m quite excited about myself. here’s what we can expect for shifting improvement (justincredible’s old A6)

http://www.streetfire.net/video/vast-performanceperformance-trans-file_152645.htm

Two of my friends have B5 S4’s one is a manual 6speed one of them has a 5speed Tip tronic with a JHM TCU program. Its crazy night and day. The car really shifts quite more agressive. Really adds a sport feeling let along the speed difference acceleration wise

It is great to see that the 3.0 is finally getting some love…

I also have a tip and believe that there is a lot of room for improvement there. My 3.0 is currently out of action at the moment, so I will be trying to provide as much information on the car as I can, so pulling out the ECU and TCU wont be that much of an issue for me.

There is a lot of room for improvement in lots of things. The TCU can be seriously sped up to help the cars acceleration and fun factor.

If you guys have a common issue list with the motor or the car. I would suggest listing it so the issues can be solved or addressed.

Just issues in general?

I know the power steering rack usually needs to be replaced, they seem to start leaking and failing prematurely. There’s a thread on AZ where we are trying to determine the most cost effective way to source a new rack and replace it, apparently the B7 rack is a direct swap to our car. Mine is leaking a bit and groans at low speed sharp turns, but I just top off the fluid every few months for now.

Motor mounts and snub should be replaced at around 60k miles, mine are way overdue. This is often done improperly as well and just results in equal or increased vibration. Couple good writeups for this which I can link, although I’m not sure if the 1.8 and 3.0 mount replacement is different.

These would be good to address before you start adding more power to your car, outside of obvious things like spark plugs and coilpacks.

Another big one is cat converter failure, I read at one point that the failure is usually associated with the precats and not the main cat itself, they usually fail just outside of their warranty. There’s no documentation/DIY’s for 3.0 replacement of this. Apparently the cat is located in a different part of the exhaust than on the 4.2’s. I think b6joes4 can elaborate on that.

Not sure if those were the kind of issues you were looking for, but I thought it might be useful. Those seem to be issues that are often related to our cars directly and not just A4’s in general.

Those are good for general wear and tear and what to look out for, but guessing looking for things that are specific to this motor like timing issues (tensioner/ guide failures), carbon issues, head problems (valves, springs, gasket faliure).

Just kind of major issues covered by warranty or factory replacment for a possiblity of upgrade.

The only issue in that regard is the timing belt which tends to fail before the regular maintenance interval… otherwise to my knowledge these engines are pretty reliable.

Is it just a faliure of the belt it self or is it something with in the setup if you know or have heard anything.

A good idea for starting is to find all if any of the weak points and make them non exsistant. I believe the same about the 3.0 its just a good solid strong motor.

If replacing a timing belt is gonna be one of the biggest problems this can only get better.

I have to say. You guys are doing a great job here and Im excited to see more people over here. Ive read the fail of posts on AZ. Sucks that you can’t have a larger conversation on AZ but it looks like there are a lot smarter people here.
