All new 3.0 members

Conversations regarding this on AZ just get derailed by negative nancys who don’t like the idea. I’m trying to keep the thread that popped up there civil, and so far it has been OK. This is definitely going to be where the brunt of the research and knowledge is compiled though.

To address your earlier question its usually either the water pump or the timing belt that fail around the same time, which is why both are replaced (the water pump should be replaced by one that uses a metal impeller instead of the OEM plastic)

After reading the AZ thread Im glad to see more and more 3.0 guys comming over here. Its about time the 3.0 got some love

I also read a couple different places that a lot of the time it’s some plastic piece on the water pump that goes first causing it to fail. Not the actual belt or pump but i’d have to try to locate supporting information on that…

Yes, that is often the cause of it starting to fail, which is why it’s recommended the replacement pump have a metal impeller.

BTW glad you joined up here!

Great post and very true. This was a big issue on the B5 S4’s. Im going to see if we can use the same performance upgrade Water pump on the 3.0. this not only flows more but its much stronger with better parts used for long term life of the pump.

Oh most definitely! I saw the link in the 3.0 group on AZ and looked around for a day…I had to join, lots of positive stuff going on in here!

honestly I don’t even post on Audizine. If you ask me the best thing for the 3.0 guys to do is to come over here so they can all talk out loud and really look to share there Ideas and worries.

Lots of great stuff. Good to see there are lots of actual smart people stepping in to help over here as well.

Haha on the AZ note, I can’t wait to dyno my car in the next little while, post numbers and let everyone argue over the inaccuracy of dynos and how I probably didn’t gain anything ;D

Also a common problem / upgrade on the E46/E39/etc BMW’s. I’ve had several friends that had this exact problem occur and some more a “catastrophic” scenario.

I’m always looking for the same thing with my car. Improving OEM flaws and doing preventative maintainence

here is a good post I came across on AZ with exactly this info

Mine is similar. Doesn’t groan yet but does make a little noise at full lock, probably slow leak as well.
just some questions…
Anyone ever try to rebuild the rack w/ new seals or anything?

How is the B7 rack an improvement? Did they change the design of components, etc?

I have to check to see if it’s as easy as a leaking hose or fitting, allowing air to get in. Hopefully it’s not the actual rack

lets do this. Start a new thread about this and we can adress this on its own. Ill see what I can dig up.

I was about to start a post about this actually…My car makes this horrible cracking/grinding sound when i first start it up and make the first few turns of my drive. It goes away after maybe 3 or 4 mins of driving so I didn’t think it was the CV joint/boot…and I check my power steering fluid semi-regularly and it is usually at normal. Save for a few times when its been low…but it has started doing this within the last month…could this be the power steering rack issues you guys are talking about?

Jdigga

I would start a new post. This will allow new members to see it. If possible get some video and post it up here. That will be helpfull as well.

Ill ask a few questions. can you relate to the sound and then to positive feedback threw the stearing wheel? is this noise tempiture related?

will the noise only go away after you make a few turns?

I would start a new thread.

You are right, I’ll try to get some video of the issue and post it in a new thread. It sounds like how the car sounds when you are making hte first couple turns of your drive during really cold weather…but I’m here in Houston and it’s been over 100 the majority of the week so I don’t think it’s related to the temperature. It does go away after a few turns and then doesn’t come back until the car has been off and sitting for a few hours at least.

I have vag-com available to me and willing to provide any info needed.

My car is a 2005 B6 Quattro with 6MT.

How early? I’m about 5k from the 75k TB service interval. I probably drive my car harder than most, should I get it done a few thousand miles early?

From what I’ve read it wouldn’t be a bad idea. I would make sure to get the better water pump when you do the service

I agree. The timing belt system is the life line in the car. It runs the cams adjustment the water pump. Those alone are the big issues. Its generally the water pump that goes out or the tensioner that goes bad. Ive seen the tensioners starting to go bad as early as 60k

Jason here,

Was over on AZ trying to follow the progress on the JHM thread but ended up unsubscribing due to all the damn arguing and trashtalk.

I hope things stay clean over here!

One thing I’d suggest is to just simply stop talking about what happened over there and any of the members and what they said. Already looking through a few threads on here i’ve had to re-live what’s going on over there. Please just lets get to being true Audi enthusiasts and quit ALL of the trash talk, he said-she said, over on the AZ they are doing this, ETC.

So far things look super promising here and I honestly hope it stays that way. I know a few of the members here have had issues with members over there but just leave it be here. If you want to continue to smack talk do it over there please. I’ve never had to unsubscribe to a thread before over stupid internet arguing. We should all be above such petty stuff.

With all of that out of the way!

I’m glad to be here! ;D
