It’s welded into my shitty RAI downpipe, so I’m tempted to just bust the thing out.
Step 1: Buy TIG welder - Check
Step 2: Learn how to weld - In progress
Step 3: Buy pieces/parts to build the manifold no one else wants to make for the B7 - Beginning stages

Nice! What Turbo are you going with?
EFR 7163. This will be a lengthy process that will involve buying a second vehicle to drive while the B7 is down. I’ve been wanting a small truck anyway.
Nice! i keep forgetting the 7163 is a T4
The collector is 1.5" NPS, and I would ideally like 1.25" NPS. The trade off here is that I shouldn’t have to worry about my collector falling apart like Martin’s did. Since this is my first manifold, I want to make it as easy on myself as I can. Any recommendations on filler? I was thinking 1/16" 316L.
I’d buy a few small packs of different sizes and and figure out what one you like best.
that’s the rod u want but seriously if u can avoid it I would use mig or tig. you will curse constantly if you are new at welding and likely have holes everywhere. round tubing is a challenge in itself. thin wall is also another challenge. welding round thin wall tubing with stick u need really practice.
plus to fab up the piping u will be constantly under the car tacking and adjusting and tacking with stick sux too.
stainless wire in a mig setup would be the most user friendly
where are u located?
*edit I just saw the “check” next to the tig welder, im confused 316L is an electrode?
Who said I was using stick? ???
316L is also a type of TIG filler rod. I would never attempt to stick weld a manifold.
gotcha I just googled it. ive never called stainless filler rod anything but just that and we get it in white unmarked boxes.
to answer your question though ya u should use that.
tacking things together is still gonna be a bitch. if your looking for the easiest route. mig setup with stainless wire will save u a ton of time and cursing. even just for tacking then tig it up when yer ready.
I plan on tacking everything autogenously. I don’t have a MIG welder so that’s out. I’ve heard that the lack of post flow with MIG is a good way to get cracks in stainless.
the way I do it is I tape around the joint once I have it where I want it then I remove a small piece of tape and then tack remove a bit more tack and so on.
where are u located?
I live in Griswold, CT but my house and garage is in Oakdale. I’m living with the fiance and haven’t sold my house yet.
How bad would that look. I just tried to picture a stick welded manifold.
Real cool to see you trying to do this. Do you know the point on where the twin scroll has an advantage over the single. I think it’s great to try I just see so many other 4 cylinder big turbo guys doing so well on a single scroll.
I honestly have no idea where the twin scroll becomes beneficial over the single scroll. I just got my sights set on an EFR 7163 with the IWG twin scroll housing. I really hope it is the cat’s meow. There just aren’t any manifold options available other than custom. I’m looking into step-up runner designs so I can use 1.25" runners off the head and then step up to the 1.5" at the collector. If it turns out that this is too difficult to pull off, I’m not opposed to just using 1.5" all the way. It will probably hurt spool a bit, but will help top end power. That’s theoretically where a TS turbo needs help anyways.
Side note: I actually saw a stick welded manifold the other day online. Here it is:

Honestly not as bad as I would have thought. It still looks pretty terrible though. The Honda-tech fabrication forum has a worst fab pictures thread that will make you laugh/cringe/cry/facepalm all at the same time. I highly recommend looking at it. Then check out the best welds thread to unsee what you just saw. There are some true artists that hang out there.
twin scroll will help you spool quicker and have usable boost over a wider rpm range.
if you were closer I would love to help you with the manifold. I am such a turbo guy but unfortunately no room in my car for one. I miss doing exhausts too, I love making custom plumbing.
check this shit show out, this has always been on of my fav welding fails.

That thing has to weigh 200 lbs. Dude was super proud of it too.

that’s also way to long for the gases to get to the turbo ill bet that increases lag by 1000 rpm lol.
