Anything interesting going on around here?

Are you about to relapse? Don’t forget, Saki is counting your threads.

Just shooting the breeze. It’s been too quiet around here lately.

All the action has been in the B8 and B7 RS4 threads.

I’m ordering up some new tires for my rpf1’s. Deciding between michelin pilot super sports, conti extreme dw, hankooks, and bridgestone S04. Leaning toward the michelins. Seem to be the best tire for the money. Sticky, treadwear, warranty, comfort, rebate, etc…

And I am thinking I will be visiting Sacramento speedway for my cherry popping run this saturday. Should be fun. Hope my tires get here this week so I can run the light weight wheels. If not I guess the bbs ch anchors will have to do. All seasons on them though so not ideal. Let the excuses begin

The channeled tread pattern on the super sports is not great for launching a car from a dig. I think the dw are similar.

I saw a difference of about 0.08 seconds slower on average with channeled tread tires vs directional tires.

.08 sec on average? ouch. That’s a bit more than what I was expecting. I was looking at the Conti DW due to the weight savings; about 4 lbs/tire less than some of the competitors. I may reconsider.

Saki,

Were you seeing that difference at the track or on the street?

dragstrip

street is a bit more even because of the rough texture. More grip. The dragstrip is prepped, but reality is it’s smoothe as fuck. It’s really grippy for warm/hot tires or slick tires, but not so awesome for cool or channeled street tires.

I have a spreadsheet with all of my RS4 timeslips pumped in to it, so I can see all my times on my Kumho Excsta or whatever they were called (directional)Toyo Proxes R vs. my Continental Sport Contact 2 vs. my Michelin Pilot Sports. My car has been bone stock all the way through, and has always run the 94 octane Sunoco/Petro Canada fuel, and has always been around the same track weight for each pass.

Conti averaged 1.92
Toyo Proxes R averaged 1.84
Michelin averaged 1.90

This is a very one dimensional way to evaluate tire performance, so keep in mind that the PSS are fantastic in just about every other respect, but it’s a good test to get a general feel for the tire performance at stock tire pressure (never changed) with the same driver using similar technique at the same track over about 7 different visits and 60+ passes. I will go in the spring with my winter tires on (which are ready to be retired) to see how they do. Another option thrown into the mix.

Good info there! Since my strip days are null to a few and my weekend cruises through the twists and turns are every week, it makes most sense for me to go with the Michelins.

Although the hankooks do appeal to me from a price point and have heard they are a capable enough tire and are directional. The S04 are channeled like the Mich and conti choices.

I used to cut 1.6 sixty foots with dunlop dirrezza dz101 on ultraleggera’s if that helps

Oh and another tire question. Any issue with running a slightly wider 245/35 tire? My wheels are 9" wide and I don’t want to stretch a 225/40 and I don’t like the increased rolling dia of a 235/40

Are those the digi tire? Have chewed through a set of those in no time flat on the avant.

And you are an experienced launcher 8). I will be rolling out any way so my times are going to be less than impressive I’m sure.

having 500 hp helps!

although I bet your ‘average’ was more like 1.88

not really sure

yiup, about 1.7-1.8’s mostly. 1.6 was launching like a bat outta hell at about 5500 rpm. lol. that’s why i went through 3 clutches till i got the right combo! ;D

This should be pretty apparent to show what I’m referring to. My theory is that the channeled tires are just too much air and not as much contact, and when they’re spinning that contact patch (or lack of it) is the same, whereas the directional tires have a better patch.

Here’s the tread pattern on the tires Pinoy liked…

here’s the tread pattern on the ones I thought worked best for me. Correction from above, they were Toyo Proxes R

Here’s the ones that didn’t work well for me. Conti 2 and Michy PSS. Look at those massive channels…basically air that is not gripping the road when you’re ripping in a straight line. The Michelin’s would win an all around test, but for this discussion, they’re not awesome at launching from a dig.

Makes perfect sense really. Again for my overall driving experience and satisfaction, I will most likely get the mich pss and sacrifice straightline grip for all around summer performance.

Hankook for ref

Still question with regard to widths/profile

that’s what I did. It was between the PSS and DW. Both are good, both are fair priced, and both are very light. Micheline is a better tire for 10% more money, so it was a no brainer. Plus they tend to be a pretty big tire for their section width.

for tires I love these
