APR Stage 3 - Place your bets!

^^^you need a solid clutch solution already…nevermind with a bigger blower.

I haven’t launched mine at all. The clutch is holding fine at the moment.

Yes, I mean you as in the b8 guys

$7k

i know the douche factor weighs in but i think any “smart” b8 owner that wants more at that point would take his 10k+ if that is eventually the cost and go trade his car in for a 4.0t equipped car.

im not planning on doing it, i feel this car needs way more to benefit it before a bigger blower like test pipes that do not have a smaller ID than stock and also a tune that can utilize catless setups to their full potential. everyone wants to jump to stage 3 so quick but we are leaving so much else on the table.

It does seem that nobody’s tunes seem to be able to deal with the cat delete. Something odd there.

and yes i did purchase the 034 test pipes, i did measure them and my car was on the lift ready for me to install them and i decided against it because frankly, they are poorly designed. i much rather do piggies

i think there is a torque limit implemented in this ecu like there was in the b6/7. jhm was the only company that would shut it off, hence the faster times. also hence why no matter what you did all motor, and if you didnt have a jhm tune, you went no better than 13.3

If I remember correctly the first release of the APR S2 beta software had this problem where on WOT the ECU would cut power and the car would free-rev until causing the car to slow and reduce power. I believe that was fixed prior to the official release, or shortly thereafter.

However, I still believe there are additional safety features built into the ECU that can limit power (1-2 hang up on DGS shifts when traction is an issue).

Stock cats are flow pretty good. Piggies would be interesting. In before someone lectures you on nonlaminar air flow.

On the b7 rs4 the big tuners turned off the throttle limiter (apr, giac etc) . I don’t think they would figure it out on the rs4 and not the s4.

yes they do since they are so big, it gives plenty of area for air to flow through. i wouldnt do piggies unless i know someone is tuning the car for them. cough cough wake up JHM cough cough

I really think there is still much left on the table for a stock supercharged b8. it needs the same jhm treatment the 4.2 got where they focus on efficiency rather than boost and timing and THEN go for the bigger blower.

^^^I talked to them about that recently. I think you’re going to grow old waiting for it. Too much on the table with the S5/RS4/S4. Also the B8 trade is a crowded one already.

I think you’ll see JHM dominate the B8 S4 at some point…but probably not till 2015.

hmmm, maybe i need to give them a call. they have a car right here… i wouldnt mind round 2

DO IT!!

Interesting thoughts on the test pipes and headers… FWIW the HFC’s are smaller than the stock cats, however they do create more airflow area over headers and test pipes while in theroy flowing better than the stock cats… Unfortunately, I didn’t measure the id of the HFC’s before the install…

Saki, It’s a shame JHM doesn’t hire more resources and broaden their business… While I understand they need people with certain skills, for tuning and product design I am sure they could find them and grow the business while being more profitable… Just my perspective…

when i recieved my 034 test pipes i literally just dropped the box in disgust. i assumed they were 2.5". not just that the flanges are off, i had to grind down the welds to create a smooth opening, and then i measure the ID and its not even 2.25! i have them sitting on the shelf, i just could not waste anymore time with them and 034 refuses to take them back because they are “custom” (insert jercking off icon here)

i have thought about tracing them and have my partner (business partner, not gay one) create 2.5" or 2.75" ones in cad and send it out to get a pair made.

odd, i know the ID on the headers is 2.5

i just wish the headers had a better merge collector… thats the only thing turning me off to them

they redesigned the merge collectors tho from what my initial set had

pics or it didnt happen!

The big guy will probably help you out because you’re a good customer but I didn’t get the impression there was any desire to make it a business focus for them. Give him a buzz.

Being niche and owning the hell out of a space is to me far more interesting for business than being one of many in a crowded market.

Think about it…who is writing tunes and making parts for the S5 4.2 guys? Nobody but an APR supercharger for $15,000 and a TTS supercharger for $20,000.

Same goes for B6/7 S4, and the RS4 (for now). Just JHM and a few other also rans, then those two big ticket RS4 superchargers. JHM absolutely owns the B6/7 market to the point that if someone gets another tune they get mocked. That business runs itself almost, with respect to market etc. If they were battling APR and AWE and GIAC and everyone in the B8 world, it would be tough. I have no doubt they would do very well, but I also think that APR has their hands around the neck of that market pretty strongly, and JHM recognizes that. Further, they have a bit of a relationship with APR and I don’t think they want to run in and piss in APR’s punch bowl just to prove that their tuner has skills.

They’re busy trying to make an all motor S5 4.2 awesome, and trying to take the B6/7 and RS4 into the 10s. Plenty on their plate!
