Audi C6 S6 v10 Info Dump

The Milltek V10 S8 exhaust is 2.37" so it is safe to say that stock is probably right around there.

Dumb question, but I canā€™t seem to find anything online about itā€¦ the solar moonroof (thatā€™s presumably part of the warm weather package), what Iā€™ve read online is that the solar panels power the interior fans while the car is parked in the sun, and that youā€™re supposed to tilt the moonroof to optimize the airflow. So, how exactly does one tilt the moonroof? All the dial seems to do is slide the moonroof back, but even at the minimum setting, like 1/3 of the solar panel gets tucked into the roof. Am I missing something?

Did C6s come with the solar panel roof? I thought that was C5 only.

The one Iā€™ve used didnā€™t need to be angled. So long as youā€™ve got sunlight youā€™re fine.

European cars do

my c6 was built for US market, and definitely has a solar panel. But I think it was part of the ā€œwarm weatherā€ option, maybe? Anyways, I figured out how to tilt the roof: the dial is also a lever! Messing around with it for a while, I finally pushed on it just the right way and suddenly the roof tilted. Pull back down on the dial and it closes again. Pretty cool! Just wish it had some sort of label that says to do that, since my car didnā€™t come with the instruction manual. So just an FYI for anyone else that might have a solar moonroof!

Also apparently I have my terminology mixed up. I guess itā€™s actually a sunroof, because it doesnā€™t have transparent flas, whereas a moonroof does. I always thought it was the other way around!

Really enjoyed this thread - bottom line iā€™m thinking of picking up an 07 S6 - any regrets from those on this thread or owners?
My checklist - PPI, extended warranty, regular maintenanceā€¦
Anything else?

Glad to hear that you are finding the Info Dump useful.

I think the warranty route is a good option for someone who doesnt want to extensively modify the S6. I have never put a lot of faith in aftermarket warranties myself, as I have heard to many horror stories about them. From what I understand, many are good with the claims up until you hit somewhere around the cost of the warranty, and then they start denying everything. That is with the ones in Canada anyway. I heard that there are some better ones in the US, but youll have to do your research. If you can get a factory Audi warranty, then that is great.

If you work it out mathematically, I think you are further ahead getting a high mileage example, or a car with issues, and then addressing all the shortcomings of the factory design with aftermarket parts, as we are doing with the S6 project carā€¦

With that car, I hope to end up with a vehicle that is bombproof, easy to service, runs as smoothly as new, and has much increased performance compared to stock. The cost of the mods to the car have already exceeded the purchase price of the vehicle. So, it is not necessarily the path for everyone.

In my opinion, the single most important thing to have in S6 ownership has nothing to do with the car. If you want the best chance of being a happy v10 S6 owner, then you need to have a good shop to maintain, and work on the car. That is important with all Audiā€™s, but I feel especially with the S6. There have been some reports of repairs exceeding $30k over a couple years of ownership. When you can get a rebuilt short block from Audi for $8700, a $30k repair bill to troubleshoot engine issues makes absolutely no sense to me. You need a solid relationship with a competent shop if you want to own one of these cars. Or, a factory warranty.

Lastly, the one recurring issue that I still view as unresolved is the issue of misfires. It is a tricky one, as their are multiple root causes for the problem. I would love to be able to have a standard troubleshooting document that could be used to identify all root causes of misfires, but I dont think we are quite there yet. On the project car, we are replacing almost every item that could contribute to misfires, so it will be interesting to see if any are present when we are done.

I remember reading that even stock, the RS4 misfires. So, maybe some misfires are normal. But then, at very least, we should be able to determine an acceptable level of misfires. More data gathering and investigation is necessary to complete the chapter on Misfires and the v10 S6.

Again, Im very happy to see so many people joining the site, and taking an interest in the v10 S6. The more people who contribute with feedback from their own experiences with the car, the better the Info Dump becomes.

Cheers!

I donā€™t regret my 2007 S6 purchase at all. In fact, Iā€™ve never been this happy with a car purchase. I took a HUGE gamble buying a 92k mile S6, sight unseen, from out of state. I had to rely on the word of a very shady car salesman. I took another gamble by not buying a warranty, because my only option was for a terrible 20k mile, $5000 warranty. So far, no regrets on either point. It is my opinion (based on no scientific info whatsoever) that if an S6 has over 80k miles or so, chances are itā€™s already undergone any major repairs that would have been required. Of course, it could also mean that it was about due for a major repair, so the owner offloaded it before doing the work. What I will say, is that out of all the used S6 purchasers Iā€™ve seen on here, only a handful have had major problems, while most have had no major problems. These engines are rock solid - until they arenā€™t. When something goes wrong, it is often a major undertaking. Luckily, most seem to never have anything major go wrong.

Hi guys, new member her but have owned my S6 for 3 1/2 years now.

I believe my experiences with misfires relating to the oil separator have been posted already however i thought i would follow this up with some more recent misfires.

This occurred only upon start up and lasted just a few minutes and as was suggested earlier in the thread related to a failing battery. 24 hours on my optimate resolved the issue for a couple of months however once it started again a replacement was in order and all is well.

Great info, Barry.

So I am new here but not new to Audi ownership, a veteran of 7 different models sInce 1981. The first being an Audi Quattro Coupe. My dilemma or question is that I have the opportunity to purchase a one owner, low mileage (60,000), service records, new Michelin, 2007 S6. Test drove it, which was my mistake, and fell in love with the exotic rumble. The subtle appeal leaves me wanting this car! But I donā€™t want a headache or nightmare from keeping it running. The Audi version Lambo V10 scares me, not for its power or regular maintenance cost but for the big repair cost and reliability. Donā€™t want to end up on the side of the road or mortgaging my house. Also being a sports boat owner Iā€™m understanding the cost of high dollar toys but is this the car for me? Would be a daily driver in addition to my 2006 Audi A4 3.0L and 1993 Range Rover LWB. Please help me with the pros and cons to ownership of this beast. Of course after reading this and other threads I am left confused and undecided.

Audiophile, welcome to AudiRevolution!

Youll find you get the best response to a question like this, if you start a separate thread in the A6/S6/RS6 section.

As far as PROS and CONS, I suggest you look at a few threads. First page of the S6 v10 Info Dump has two main sections called THE GOOD and THE BAD. Those are the pros and cons of the v10, outlined as well as I could.

Another recent thread with a person considering the v10 S6, should be a good readā€¦

And, if you are interested in any kind of aftermarket potential, and repair/maintenance that addresses the shortcomings of the factory design, then youll want to check out my v10 s6 project threadā€¦

When I purchased my S6, I found the cheapest, clean car, I could find, and then made plans to replace half the parts on the car with aftermarket stuff. Of course, everyones goal for the car will be different. So, if you still canā€™t decide if the S6 is right for you after reading those threads, then make sure you start a new thread with any unanswered questions you still have.

Good Luck!

Cool! They seem to love the S6 on Jalopnik.

Since so many of us have Phantom Black Pearl S6ā€™s, figured Iā€™d leave this here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J50M57W/

$35 rattle-can set of LZ9Y paint and clearcoat.

Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d recommend them for touch-up purposes unless you really know what youā€™re doing, but for painting replacement primered body pieces it works well. I used it to paint a pair of new headlight washer covers, and it was perfect for that. Much cheaper than having a paintshop do it, same results. Full disclosure, I used to be a painter in a previous life, so your mileage may vary.

Iā€™m sure other Audi colors are available from them as well, but I donā€™t have links for those.

Lol, yeah that may make a slight difference! I have access to an amazing paint guy who is almost cheaper than doing it yourself, only problem is he is not a secret and is ALWAYS busy so getting him to do any side work is almost impossible.

Nice tip, c.scott!

I may be late to the party but when I was having conversations with JHM I remember them saying there were a handful of s6 and s8 in the high 11s and low 12s, and this consisted of header back exhaust with no cats, updated intake (maybe just filters) and tune.

After my mods my c6 s6 felt similar to my e60 m5 when it was stock up to about 90-100 mph (after that the m5 would walk the s6 mostly due to mkre high reving motor, and gesr ratios/trans, and rwd).

Iā€™m fairly Confident my s6 was capable of 12.7-12.9 with my mods. Decatting, tune, im spacers, true cai was next with the hopes of being between the realm of Power of my stock and modified m5ā€¦So 11.9-12.3. That package in awd with the throttle response and sound is a fantastic package and very use able . As cool as a d4 s8 us doing 10.x with a tune it just seems too artifical , souless, and honestly just too easy. Iā€™ll also counter this with sentiment from a gentleman thst owned both c6 rs6 and s6 in europe. He actually preferred the s6 as it never felt tired, had more linear power and felt more balanced, predictable and plain raw wuth soul
