Audi voids powertrain warranty on APR tuned car

Pretty shitty. So much for ‘undetectable’.

Yea I just read that. Those kind of things make me skittish about modding a new car

Man JHM needs to do a b8s4 tune, I would imagine they could squeeze a decent amount of extra performance in the lower end. Seems like all the tunes just give a bit more hp throughout the rpm range and then hold boost where it drops off at stock to give a higher peak HP. Good for balls out driving but not much difference for regular driving.

it baffles me how ppl think tunes are undetectable. its very easy for audi to find a tune. and stock mode is just that… stock performance mode

^x2, thats what I’ve always thought as well. I’d have spare ecu or be able to completely remove the tune if warranty was still a real concern to me. I did’t do anything but catback & suspension stuff while I still had my warranty.

That guy had a problem with his ECU when he sent it to APR. APR bought him a new ECU and sent it to NGP racing. NGP racing sent it to the dealer to have it coded to his car… If that doesn’t rise a red flag nothing does.

Besides this guy is as stupid as they come. If someone read his thread “APR is scamming people” or something like that you will agree with me.

oh no shit i didn’t realize it was the same guy

Yep… lol…

Lol I was so upset at this dude’s entitlement issues by page 2, I had to leave the thread. Just in case you didn’t notice, Marty was the guy who mostly flushed it out of him. Like I said already to a few of you, he make seem like a prick online, but in real life he’s very personable…I think it’s a NJ thing.

not sure it matters…the bottom line is that it should serve as a good warning for folks

guy is definitely slightly retarded though lol

^^^ oh, Sak, I meant on his previous thread on APR…which is how we came to the same conclusion as you.

Agreed, worried, but I only have 1 year left on my warranty. Tuned motors aren’t breaking yet, except a few untuned duds early in their lives from the factory.

Lol, why did I stop watching south park…apparently I missed some good ones.

well, for this to be a concern for you guys…

  1. you need a failure in the next year
  2. you need your tune to be detected
  3. you need your dealer to act like his dealer

I wouldn’t worry about it.

I still say something is fishy about the situation. I followed his other “F U APR” thread, and was rooting for him (inside my mind, lol) until it was found that he didn’t even rent a car :-\ WOW…anybody else think he’s stirring the pot so that APR can loose potential customers? Maybe it’s revenge on his failed venture from that previous time?

Well I talked to someone in a shop in SoCal who echoed the same thing a week ago, he said the dealers are cracking down on people with tunes, so it seemed to be brewing. Then this thread showed up. We’ll see how hard Audi takes it, the enthusiast backlash could be intense if they take the warranty issue beyond the realm of related failures.

yeah, well bottom line is that a tune could be blamed for all kinds of stuff. Not just engine failure, but if they really want they can blame your problems with everything that runs off the serp belt, every part of the transmission, etc.

This guy is screwed now. Imagine trying to sell the car (which will be his next thread) without a warranty?

Wonder if something like this shows up on carfax? Imagine buying his ‘like new’ B8 S4, taking it in for service and finding out you have no powertrain warranty (assuming he doesn’t disclose it)?

That’s what Carmax is for

I’ve been to a bunch of gtgs with the guy and he’s as nice as they come.

^^^ I imagine he is. Everyone is really. Internet is harsh…but if you make harsh (and wrong) comments, you can expect to be raked over the coals on forums. Niceness doesn’t make you immune!

The impression I get of Marty is that he’s a young guy who lists his family members’ cars as his own, and talks a big game. He had a 5 year old A4 4 banger but would reference his being a 7 series owner etc like it was no big deal. Then he got a 335i. I was expecting him to get an M5 the way he talked.

I liked him in GCC, but when he started stepping into the B8 S4 threads and freaking out on me for pointing out simple facts to some of the head-in-the-clouds B8 guys in 2010 (i.e. that B8 S4s don’t come with 420 hp stock…that they won’t make 400 whp with just a tune etc…and that you cant apply 25% drivetrain loss to a brand new B8 on APR’s hub dyno) I lost a lot of respect for him. I think he owned a 5 year old B7 A4 at the time…and he didn’t even buy a fucking B8!

^+1 my claim on rs246 that you are alright fell on deaf ears! The internet its harsh indeed.

I agree. Just about everyone I’ve met through the Audi and Cadillac forums have been great. My wife is always amazed that I go out and meet up with people that I’ve only spoken with on the internet. I’ve said it before but she was convinced I was having an affair.
