Axle Snapped

Hey, fellas. I went autocrossing this weekend and my driver side axle snapped. Anyone know where I can get an axle for a good price? Thanks in advance.

assuming you could still swap out the snapped axle as a core, i went to a shop and they replaced my axle with a rebuilt OEM axle.

I am willing to bet that your axle probably looks like this:

Ask me how I know. The OEM axles are rebuild-able for pretty cheap.

so how do you like them R888’s lol

I only use Raxles for replacement on any VAG product. I put a Raxle on my S4 and its been great.

R Comps = hard life for your drive train, I would rather wheel spin than axles pop on my daily.

But I thought the dragstrip was harder on the car than track racing? Guess I was misinformed.

Good luck with that lo kal . It’s not a horrendous repair dollar wise or time wise. Just a pain getting towed.

I’ve heard a few people go to raxles .

Jimmy has been through like 11 for his b6. What’d you switch to Jimmy ?

Raxles told me that he would not warranty an axle on a lowered car like mine.

Saki, that is a bit of a stretch. Only broke like four or five left front axles and one right front axle. I had the Driveshaft Shop make me a custom axles using a Evo inner joint and chromoly shaft.

better an axle than something else, I always equated it to a fuse

Yes that’s how sarcasm works. You stretch things for humours sake

So it was actually 5 or 6? Holy shit. I seriously thought it was 2 and 11 was just a joke but 5 or 6 is staggering. Good thing you have a particular set of skills to deal with stuff like that.

I am aware of that. Just thought that I should point out how many I have actually broken them to put it into perspective for the OP.

Yep, it was bad when both Audi’s warranty department and the aftermarket axle companies told me that they would no longer warranty axles for my car. Now I can have a broken axle out and a new one bolted in so quickly that it takes twice as long to get the car dragged onto the lift.

Also I highly recommend using locktite on the six 10 mm triple square bolts that connect the inner CV joint housing to the flanges on the sides of the transmission. I use red locktite now instead of blue.

Why is BadNeighbourhoodRS4 and flyingmenstruation grilling you about why it how you broke an axle?

Those guys are fucking weirdos

You noticed that too huh.

I like how BadNeighbourhoodRS4 had to ask twice, “how did you snap an axle?”

BadNeighbourhoodRS4 claims he’s a road course superstar, yet he doesn’t understand the physics involved in hurling a 4000 lb car through a tight auto-x with sticky tires?

Maybe his road course skills are the same as his drag racing skills (ham fisted) and he’s never approached the limit of anything with his cars.

He is also mind blown that you can tow a car from the rear…lulz

guess his car doesn’t have a neutral

what a dummy.

Those are just too good. And you wonder why its difficult to argue much more involved/complicated matters lol .

they don’t realise it’s a flimsy little half shaft. THey think it’s a giant 6 feet wide chunk of steel like you’d see in a truck or on a rail car. Standard fare…these guys know nothing about their cars.

jimmy what are your thoughts on the raxles. are they worth the money? are they that much stronger? or were they no good and that’s why u went to something custom?

When I spoke with Raxles, it seemed like he took the factory shafts, threw on replacement CV joints, and then resold them. He probably uses cheaper aftermarket CV joints to keep the cost down since OEM CV joints are expensive and just one OEM CV joint (inner or outer) usually costs close to what a whole new OEM axle costs.

Also when I told the guy at Raxles that I am lowered he then told me that he wouldn’t warranty any axles that were used on my car. Isn’t your car on bags? I doubt that you drive around slammed to the ground but that is one more thing to keep in mind.

More than anything I went with custom axles because the factory style inner CV joints are weak and I don’t have faith in them holding. It would seem that my assumption is well founded since JHM seems to be breaking axles too with their stage 2 SC B6 S4. Take it with a grain of salt but even BenSTI said that he broke an axle with R-comp tires. The manual B6/7 S4s and RS4s use the same front axles and the B6/7 S4s make more low end torque so I would suspect that the S4s would notice this problem before the RS4s.

He claims to use new OEM axles on re-used OEM shafts. That’s why he will ask if your core is from the factory or not.

I’ve bought 3 or 4 axles from them now between 3 different cars. Marty once hooked me up after a CV exploded on my first S4. During this time was when he told me that he gets a special deal when buying TONS of CV’s from the factory under the guidelines that he uses them to make re-built axles and will not just re-sell the CV joints.

take this for what you will…it could all be bullshit to resell axles at more 2x the price of competitors. However I’ve run them for over 80k miles and have been happy with mine.
