maybe our system software is different? 2.3.5?
good point speed…that’s a distinct possiblity. bora and I are on the same carrier though so it’s weird that I’m seeing something that he’s not.

just checked 2.3.5 as well.
Any luck figuring it out saki? She’s not back intown yet, but she does I’ll try it.
didn’t work
that site appears to be more about development than about ‘I’m having a problem’. I started a thread there but 2 replies in 3 days, both guys didn’t really know what to say.
found an car guy at least
To OP, sorry I don’t have a solution for you. But I gotta tell ya, the bluetooth on this phone is pretty crappy, I’m hoping the ICS will fix a lot of Bluetooth bugs. I have an issue connecting with my Bluetooth Music Reciever (which is plugged into the AUX). I have a 2008 MB C300 and the Bluetooth wors about 95% of the time.
By the way Nice ride. RS4, same engine as the Audi R8.
I am pleased to report that the phone now works flawlessly with my Audi’s bluetooth.
The solution? Ice Cream Sandwich / 4.0, the latest operating system available for my phone.
I upgraded the phone to ICS, and it immediately began co-operating with the bluetooth.
good to hear that fixed it
I have mixed emotions about ics, I dont like the new browser but it is nice to have the option to disable apps you cant delete
my biggest frustration with it though, is the continued presence of the emergency alerts app which if you read the permissions is pretty invasive
I use dolphin browser HD. Much better. Has tabs and everything.
what are these emergency things you’re speaking of? Haven’t noticed.
nice I’ll give that browser a shot, the stock one got very clunky
emergency alerts is some bullshit verizon built into their phones… basically weather and amber alert, which can be disabled, and presidential alerts which cannot.
[tinfoil hat]
none of that I want my phone to alert me to. whats worse is what the app has permission to, gps location, text messages, calls etc… makes me very nervous. Couple that with the fact pulling the battery is a pain (only way to be sure its dead), and I really dont like it.
[/tinfoil hat]
lol that’s funny.
WTF is a presidential alert?
p.s. you need to eliminate the Verizon bloatware. Go to xda developers, learn how to root your phone, and load up a new OS
no idea what a presidential alert is, I think its all a ploy

and funny you mentioned that, I was very lightly browsing xda over the weekend… I read some stuff about the cynogen mod (spl?) and it was interesting but it didnt seem like my phone had much support. I’ll have to read more
Just got Jellybean installed on mine and I’m quite happy. The new Google Now app is pretty slick.
I woke up to find a notification saying something like
"Commute to work 1:52 hours.
Next 53E westbound at McCowan stop in 3 minutes.
Heavy traffic on Steeles Ave.
Recommended alternate is 129 Southbound at Steeles Northside stop in 7 minutes. "
I am displeased to report that I went swimming with my Samsung S2 in my pocket. Phone was fried. MORON!
I got what water out I could, then put it in rice for 2 days. Last night I turned it on and it sparked right up, perfectly. Thank goodness! Or so I thought. It wouldn’t connect to the network. I replaced my Sim card with a friend’s and it didn’t work. Phone just said ‘please insert sim card’ when I’d go into network settings. I went to Rogers and they gave me a new sim card to try for free. Didn’t work.
I asked a phone repair dude I have used in the past and he said that the S3 and S2 are unfortunately prone to this after water damage, and the part of the board that is fucked is irreplacable. Your costs exceed the phone’s value. Everything else works but radio. Wifi fine, apps fine, etc.
So, now I have a 4.3" wi-fi tablet.
So what should I get to replace it? I like Android and I don’t want a blackberry (it’s a dead end platform unfortunately)…and I don’t want an iPhone.
So my choices are
Samsung S3
Samsung Note (leading candidate)
other Android (I know nothing about the other ones)
Any advice?
The Samsung phones are pretty damn good from what I’ve seen. Add Jelly Bean 4.1 that should be coming for the S3/Note (if not already out) and it should be smooth. If Apple’s ban goes through both of those phones won’t be available anymore.
I got the S3 when it came out recently and I would highly recommend it. Best phone I’ve ever owned, by far. I had previously used a number of Motorola android phones and a couple of blackberrys, but the Samsung is a totally different experience.
My two biggest gripes with the Motorola phones were the performance and battery life. The hardware on the S3 (dual core, 2gb of ram) allows you to use tons of applications all at once without having the phone slow down or the need to kill the apps all the time. The battery life is fantastic. I easily make it all day without recharging and that includes heavy use to and from work on days when I ride the bus.
The camera is amazing and takes pics as fast as you can hit the button. It comes preloaded with ICS so you likely won’t have any more bluetooth issues.
I could ramble on for a while about the S3 but go check one out in the store. I bet you’ll leave with it if you do.
thanks for the S3 review. It’s very similar to the S2 and that was fantastic. The S3 just makes a bunch of improvements on that, so that sounds good.
having owned a GS2 and GS3…
3 of the things i REALLY like about the GS3 that the 2 didnt have.
Physical home button.
Notification light (led blinks to tell you you have an email, text message ect.)
The ability to plug in any type of usb starage device into the phone (through a cable) So i can copy files from someones USB key directly to my phone without the use of a computer.
Its a smidge bigger then the GS2, not as big as the note.
1 thing i really hate!
Samsung tried to create their own version of swype… it BLOWS! You have to remove it and install SWYPE beta from the swype website.
I used swype on the S2. Are you referring to that? Or something else?
also, the ‘physical home button’ that the S2 didn’t have…what does that mean? There is a home button on the bottom of the S2. In fact the S3 loses a button doesn’t it?
S2 had menu/home/back/search
(on the right)

The S3 has an actual “physical” button at the bottom. Those 4 buttons on the S2 are virtual buttons. The S3 has 2 virtual buttons as well. One for the menu and one for going back. No search virtual button on the S3. You have to double tap the physical button to pull it up.
saki - are you having to pay outright for the phone or are you getting a new one (SGS3, note) for free? If you’re paying outright, then this might be of interest:
https://shop.koodomobile.com/koodo-cell-phones/android/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-x/prodKHSAMGLXYSIIX.html
You buy the phone for $150 from Koodo and they give you the phone plus a $100 Visa gift card. Then you pay off the $150 with Koodo. So a new SGS2x for $200. Add in $7 to unlock it: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/180946494287?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1808wt_1139
This one is different from the one you had but mostly the same. If you’re geeking out on XDA forums look for the ROM’s for the SGH-T989D which is the Telus/Koodo version. It’s essentially the same as the USA T-mobile version, which is SGH-T989. This is one of the few phones that supports the Rogers/Bell/AT&T bands 3G AND the Tmobile/Wind/Mobility 3G bands. Which is great as Tmo has a great pay as you go rates, including data.
Having said that, the SGS3 is THE best phone out there right now.
