badtoyz build thread.

and yes I just mean for now. im gonna get stage 2 as soon as the guys will sell it to me. I also have my bilsteins yet to put in and im going to actually remove the entire drc system. im looking at the jhm rear lsd, apikol diff mount, boost gauge right now. I also want to do the rest of the mounts. I can feel some slop now with the added power. but for this season the car is finished im going to drive it till it snows and then it goes back on stands for more work.

went to the track on Saturday. as you can see above I ran 11.91@119 mph not too bad of a time. get this I made those passes in limp mode. ive got an electrical gremlin my car is throwing all kinds of random codes, power supply voltage, hvac, radio, gps, external temp sensor etc etc. and it wont let me rev the car over 7200 rpm.

so I trapped those speeds and ets short shifting the car which was very difficult. if u actually hit 7200 the car will shut the throttle off completely for a few seconds. so realistically I was shifting at 6800 or 7000 rpm. I have no idea what is wrong with the car right now. on Friday I was doing 3k to 8k pulls and everything was fine. I parked the car in the garage that night woke up in the morning washed it and went to the track. I was thinking maybe the ecus got wet. ive got the covers off them right now with a heater and fan going on them since last night. today I got up and cleared the codes and went for a drive. i launched the car and shattered the tranny crossmember and it still wont go to 8k.

funny and tragic coincidence, mistro also broke the same crossmember today. im thinking im going to make a stronger one out of steel. maybe jake or somebody from jhm can chime in their thoughts on this obvious weak spot on the car.

the car easily has an 11.70 in it maybe even 11.60 the way it is right now. i also was getting 1.6xx 60 ft times if i went right behind this corvette guy who just smoked his tires down the whole track. i was also full weight i didn’t take anything out of the car at all. all the tire sealant compressor tools and stock battery were in it. i need that xtra 1000 rpm the car absolutely screams from 7 to 8k theres no point where it noses over it just pulls harder and harder all the way to the rev limiter (when i can get there).

so im gonna take a couple days to think about whats happening here. im open to any and all suggestions anyone has regarding the electrical issues or crossmember.

one thing we know for sure is that the jhm charger is most definitely making great power. the car comes out of the hole violently! its really an incredible feeling when u dump the clutch and the car hooks. it feels almost like its jumping off the line. wish i had someone to take video on Saturday.

WOW that sucks so bad. you basically were running like a b6 s4 with the lower rpm and that is right in the range. The funny part is that the last 1000 rpm with the JHM blower is where the big amount of power comes in. I would maybe think about just making a supercharger results thread. This is great but its on page 17 of a great thread. You can just have to results. It might be easy for people who are looking for results to get some by just reading a results thread.

As for the reduced RPM. That is limp mode setting from the JHM tune. You will see that if you have a bad maf or 02s from what I know and from what I have seen. What codes do you have

The only engine code is the power supply voltage code. I did have a maf code yesterday when I first noticed the issue but I cleared it and it never came back… yet. I’ll start a results thread once the car is fixed. You’re absolutely correct about the maf and 02s. If either signal is bad it pulls rpm.

Pretty awesome.

Would be great to see the car with that top end restored although I don’t think it would be drastically different. The curve from say 5800-7500 isn’t dramatically different from 6300-8000. Still it would be nice to see you combine everything…launch with a good track prep (in fall they barely bother and often run only 1 lane prepped)…nail your shifts…run out to 8000 to let the CFuge do its thing.

If we assume you’re going to trap about 118 mph, we can get an idea of what ‘could be’ if the stars align.

JHM ran a stage 1 car in California back in 2013 with JHM exhaust and just full catless exhaust and went 11.6 @ 118. They mixed in race gas with california 91 octane, and the mix worked out to about 95 octane. As a result, they never released the time to the market because it wasn’t a true ‘pump gas’ time, so they buried it. But the DA wasn’t as good as what we get here, so we can at least look at their time and their trap to get an idea of the ET possible with a given level of power.

I would say a 11.6 is very much possible for you badtoyz. Problem is with great DA comes shit traction. Milan dragway would be a good place to visit. They put down ludicrous amounts of VHT even in October. When JHM was there a couple of years ago prepping an RS4 for a record, the car broke an axle and when Jason got out of the car, his shoes came off, stuck to the track.

Excellent results for a car in limp mode.

It sounds like JHM or 034 needs to make a better cross member.

seriously. It’s pretty stout, but it’s cast aluminium. Still weighed a ton. The chunk that came off Mistro’s car was significant.

Oh and for perspective, Mistro and I also ran our RS4s at the same dragstrip as Badtoyz this weekend

My best 12.69 @ 109.8 (1.96 60’ time lol)
mods: JHM downpipes (catted) and JHM catback, 94 octane

Mistro’s best 12.40 @ 112.3 (1.86 60’ time)
mods: JHM downpipes (catted) and JHM catback, 94 octane, JHM 93 tune, JHM LWFR/JHMLWRR, JHM LWCP, JHM intake spacers, JHM LWFW/clutch

Last year mistro and i went 12.51 @ 110.5 and 12.21 @ 113.2 on the same day. Delta 3 tenths, 3 MPH. Same as yesterday. Only diffference then was it was really sunny and traction was great. Mistro also had LW wheels last year. With a 1.80-182 like I was doing last year there and a 1.74 like he was, we’d both be right where we were in 2014.

Badtoyz was 11.91 @ 118.7

He has JHM full exhaust like us, stock wheels like we ran this weekend, JHM intake spacers…and really the only differentiator is the JHM supercharger .

Comparing badtoyz vs. me = my car + JHM intake spacers and JHM stage 1 supercharger
The delta was 8 tenths and 9 MPH

Comparing badtoyz vs. mistro = mistro’s car - JHM LWFR and LWRR, but adding JHM stage 1 supercharger
The delta was 5 tenths and 6 MPH

Very compelling case for the supercharger. It is adding what appears to be about 60-70 HP over the JHM full bolt on car. I reckon that will be even bigger if he can clear those apparently water related codes and get back to 8000 RPM. Add to this the potential for LW wheels, LW rotors…you could see an 11.5 @ 120 on pump gas in an RS4. Pretty exciting for $8,000 + exhaust or whatever it is now.

Good to do a good comparison same track, same conditions, and 3 good drivers.

im still at a loss to figure out these codes. im not sure where to start or what to take apart.

this is what ive tried so far:

disconnected the battery and left it over night.

scanned and cleared the codes. they don’t come back with ignition on but come back as soon as you start the car.

open ecus and put heat and fans on them im pretty sure if it was water they would be dry by now.

reached around and wiggled all connectors I could get to.

checked the ground for the battery. its solid.

Have you checked voltage in VAGCOM or with a multimeter on any connectors?

The problem is…if electronics get wet and something shorts…it won’t just fix itself by drying out.

Did you wash the engine bay?

Sorry I didn’t see you already posted the codes with the varying accessory voltages. Looks like all the affected accessories are on the driver side of the car. Check all the fuses and relays under the plenum chamber. After that I would look at the wiring harness and connectors where water could have gotten. The hood vents on your car would be the target area imo.

He sort of did. Went to a car wash with a carbon fibre hood with lots of vents.

the ecu on the drivers side is in a closed case. much more protected then the other one. you would think it wouldn’t get wet but stranger things have happened.

I checked all the fuses just now and actually the connectors behind that ecu could totally have gotten wet theyre just under the wiper and like I said I don’t have my weather stripping in. im gonna go start it and see whats happening now. I disconnected the battery and just left it since yesterday.

im hoping it was the water making the short and nothing is physically damaged.

I might’ve missed this, but how old is the battery?

Also, check the ground under the rain tray on the passenger side by the 2nd ECU. It’s grounded to one of the main posts for jump-starting the vehicle…that ground can corrode over time.

battery is still the same one I bought the car with. I will check that ground by the passenger side ecu tonight.

Quite a few people are reaching the end of life on their original battery, and it can cause little electrical gremlins. It looks like your voltage is pretty low, and many of those codes are with the motor not running (i.e. turning the key > starter pulls everything it can > voltage drops > other electronics in the vehicle are starved, and in some cases used as additional ground paths for the starter). I wouldn’t go out replacing your battery on a hunch, but keep an eye on your voltages.
