badtoyz build thread.

did he test that? Might have missed it.

Interesting hypothesis that the battery is causing problems.

I’m just going off the log above… One of the codes is for 0v to ECU #2, that says bad ground or bad battery to me. I’m not sure about the relay(s) that power it, but that’s where I would start investigating. If you take the battery in to be “tested”, it may pass, but still be on it’s way out. Electrical issues can be lots of things, just gotta prove it out bit by bit…

If the relay went funky that could be it as well. We just had one die on our B8 A4 Avant, and it was causing a myriad of issues with ECU communication and a variety of codes.

Do you remember which one died? I’ve got a relay that’s on it’s way out but haven’t done much investigating.

got my crossmember today and was speaking with audi tech and he said the same thing. the comfort control module will cause every code I mentioned to him and he said theyre quite common to fail. im gonna start with replacing that. I still think my maf may need changing. no code came back but it might be old and sluggish.

ill snap a few picks of the broken member as soon as I get it out.

That would be cool get some pictures. The car ran well with the limitations get the car back together and back to the track

ok so finally back at it. I know my updates are few and far between and it takes me forever to do anything but seeing dennis results tonight got me excited to work on my own car. I finally got it up and dropped the exhaust and got the old crossmember out. turns out I broke the tranny mount as well which I was originally going to order but after seeing the mistros was ok I figured mine would be too. I was wrong. so tomorrow I’m ordering the tranny mount and a new maf.

its interesting that the member broke almost perfectly symmetrical on both sides and almost perfectly in the middle.

You managed to break the heck out of that. Nice to see you back working on the car.

cast aluminium…seems to not be happy after 7-8 years

There may be a desire to improve upon it, but to be honest with 50 or so dragstrip launches and a bunch of street launches on it, I don’t think it did too badly after that long.

I imagine a new one will outlast your (and most people’s) ownership period.

Seeing the pain in the ass that it created, makes me want to get that done if I ever get a clutch job.

Wow that thing is wasted. Do you have an upgraded trans mount? Are any of your other mounts upgraded?

Ny07rs4 shared this video with me. Results look convincing so I’m gonna coat my crossmember with bed liner tonight. I’m gonna use Canadian tire stuff but the ingredients are the same. It’s still a polyurethane coating. Whether it will help or not I’m not really sure but it can’t hurt.

here it is all ready to rock. my mount is here so the car will be back on the ground tomorrow.

like I said whether it makes it stronger or not we will likely never know but it cant hurt.

Spray an egg and see if the egg holds up

No, you should throw your crossmember off your roof onto your driveway. It’ll definitely be worth it

Make sure your trans is jacked all the way up before bolting that sucker in. You probably know that already, just making sure since I broke mine.

Someone needs to make a billet one for this very reason. I don’t know how many posts I read where crossmember takes a crap. Maybe 034MS would jump on this or JHM…

Really eh? Interesting.

Mistro was the first one I’ve ever heard of breaking. That was on an rs4. The same day Badtoyz broke his.

The rs4 came out in 2007.

Mr Wrong are you referring to B6 S4s? I have been out of touch with the B6 forums. I bet most if not all of the other ones that failed were B6 guys. Those cars, some of them, we’re on the road in September 2002…13 years ago.

got the car all back together and all is well with the tranny mount and cross member. I also replaced my maf and went for a drive. I’m still limited to 7500 rpm for some reason and I still have all those central conv codes I posted above. I have no idea whats up with this car and don’t really know where to start. I shot jbones a pm to see if hes heard of this before. anyone else have any thoughts?

pic of the mount and how much it broke. and a quick pic once I had the exhaust and everything all buttoned back up.

The new unit looks good. I like the coating you added.

Before the break happened did the car make it to full rpm

so the car was running perfectly on Friday before I went to the track I actually drove out to the track fri night but it ended up not opening because of a small sprinkle of rain. that night I also did some video of 3k to 8k pull and all was well I woke up the next day and decided I was going to thee track again. all I did was put some gas in and wash the car and head to the track. went to the track and ran 11.9s short shifting the car. went home and tried a few things to see if I could get the revs back and when I went to test it I launched the car on the road and the crossmember broke. so long story short no its not an issue from the broken member. if no one has any ideas I’m gonna just take it in to foreign auto this week they have a lot of knowledge and better diagnostic tools than I have.

Do you stll have the stock hood. Any chance that you could have gotten some water into the ECU part of the engine bay on the wash.
